Academic History
At Scarborough TEC, I studied GCSE Maths and English Language alongside a Level 2
Media Makeup course. I am now currently at the end of the first year of the Level 3
Creative Media course at York College. Studying this course will benefit me with my
applications to university as I have applied for courses that are also media related or
'Digital Media'. On my current course, I have developed skills in 'Photoshop'
'Illustrator' and 'Premiere Pro' as well as research skills and planning. These have
benefitted by allowing me to gain experience working on media products and projects
which I will similarly be doing on the university courses I applied for.
Current Study
Throughout my first year of this course, I have gained skill and experience creating a
variety of products for different project. At the start of the year, for the first project I
created a music video. This helped me develop skills using 'Premiere Pro' for editing,
as well as learning various camera shots and techniques and research skills whilst
planning and developing a case study. For the next project was an 'adventure project',
this is where I had to make a package for a film concept including a pixel art game
concept video along with a soundtrack, a magazine cover and film posters and logo.
For this project I further developed my research and planning skills whilst researching
a variety of adventure films and existing products. I also developed skills and
experience using 'Photoshop'. I also used this to create my animation for my video
game concept. For my final project, I chose to create an advertising package for a
superhero film concept. I created a variety of posters, a magazine cover and
merchandise concepts using the skils I had developed in 'Photoshop' from my previous
project.
The Future
In the future I would like to work in the media industry, whether that be working in an
agency or for a company, or even freelance. After working on different projects
throughout the year, I decided that I would like to work in advertising, print or graphic
design. This is because I found that I enjoyed and could demonstrate more skils when
creating print products as opposed to film and music video. University and the courses
I applied for will help me achieve this career goal by allowing me to gain more
experience working on projects focused around this sector. Going to university will
also allow me to gain a higher qualification which, along with a strong portfolio, could
help me gain a higher-ranking job in the advertising sector.
Outside College
Outside of college, as well as working on mini products to build my skills mostly using
'Photoshop', I enjoy watching films and interacting on social media. I view and interact
with promotional material for various films and products that I see online. This will
help me in my university course as I see promotional products often which will help
with my research skills, as well as gain inspiration for my own future projects.
Conclusion
I would like to go to university to help develop skills and knowledge in the advertising
and print side of media, as well as gain a qualification/degree that is required by many
jobs in this industry. Achieving high grades on my current media course will help me
gain enough UCAS points to attend university, building a strong portfolio will also help
me achieve this. I am a good candidate because I am hard working and passionate
about digital media, I would like to further develop my skills, extend my knowledge
and continue building my portfolio which will later help me when applying for jobs.
Introduction
For my university plans, I am applying for courses in digital media, graphic design and
creative advertising. These are all similar subjects based around advertising and print
in digital media, which is the industry I would like to be in for my career. I want to
study one of these courses so I can develop my skills in a variety of software, further
build my portfolio and gain a qualification which will help me when applying for jobs
that require a university degree.
