What is matter?
What are the building blocks of all matter?
What is an atom?
What are the three parts of an atom?
The number of ______ determines what kind of
atom it is.
Atoms join together and make__________.
Molecules grouped together make _________.
What tool do scientists use to organize the
elements?
How are elements grouped?
They are grouped by how
they look and act.
What do the numbers symbolize for each
element? What is the number called?
The number above the element is the
number of protons in the atom
The number is the atomic number
What do the letters stand for?
The letters are the symbol for the
element’s name.
The symbol is either the first letter or the
first two letters of the name.
Some of the symbols come from the
elements ancient name- for example gold
is Au-Latin name aurum
What makes each element
different?
The number of protons in the atom
How do I know how many electrons are in
an element according to the periodic
table?
There must be a balance between the
positively charged protons and the
negatively charged electrons…..
An atom must have an equal number
of protons and electrons
What is the difference between
the row and column of the table?
The row- is called a period.
The column- is called a group.
