This document summarizes research that analyzed the performance of a magnetostrictive amorphous wire sensor for measuring motor speed. The sensor operates based on the Large Barkhausen Jump phenomenon of the wire. Test results showed that frequencies measured from the wire sensor agreed well with speeds measured by a digital tachometer. Using two magnets attached to the rotor provided a more uniform signal from the wire than using a single magnet. The wire sensor is a potential alternative to other speed sensing methods.
