The penetration resistance test measures the compressive strength of concrete by firing a steel probe into the surface and measuring how deep it embeds. Three valid penetration measurements must be taken at least 200mm apart and 150mm from edges. The average penetration depth is then used to check manufacturer graphs to determine the approximate compressive strength. Any tests with probes not firmly embedded or with readings varying over 5mm are not valid and must be repeated.
NDT (NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING) OF CONCRETE STRUCTURE ANSHULAnshul Shakya
Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods have a large potential to be part of such a system. NDT methods in general are widely used in several industry branches. Aircrafts, nuclear facilities, chemical plants, electronic devices and other safety critical installations are tested regularly with fast and reliable testing technologies. A variety of advanced NDT methods are available for metallic or composite materials. In reassessment of existing structures, have become available for concrete structures, but are still not established for regular inspections.
Therefore, the objective of this project is to study the applicability, performance, availability, complexity and restrictions of NDT. The purpose of establishing standard procedures for nondestructive testing (NDT) of concrete structures is to qualify and quantify the material properties of in-situ concrete without intrusively examining the material properties. There are many techniques that are currently being research for the NDT of materials today. It is focuses on the NDT methods relevant for the inspection and monitoring of concrete materials. In recent years, innovative NDT methods, which can be used for the assessment of existing structures, have become available for concrete structures, but are still not established for regular inspections. Therefore, the objective of this project is to study the applicability, performance, availability, complexity and restrictions of NDT.

The quality of new concrete structures is dependent on many factors such as type of cement, type of aggregates, water cement ratio, curing, environmental conditions etc. Besides this, the control exercised during construction also contributes a lot to achieve the desired quality. The present system of checking slump and testing cubes, to assess the strength of concrete, in structure under construction, are not sufficient as the actual strength of the structure depend on many other factors such as proper compaction, effective curing also. Considering the above requirements, need of testing of hardened concrete in new structures as well as old structures, is there to assess the actual condition of structures.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.

Sachpazis:Terzaghi Bearing Capacity Estimation in simple terms with Calculati...Dr.Costas Sachpazis
Terzaghi's soil bearing capacity theory, developed by Karl Terzaghi, is a fundamental principle in geotechnical engineering used to determine the bearing capacity of shallow foundations. This theory provides a method to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of soil, which is the maximum load per unit area that the soil can support without undergoing shear failure. The Calculation HTML Code included.
1. Penetration Resistance Test
• Test should be confirm to BS 1881 Part 207
• The penetration resistance test is based on the concept that the depth of penetration of
a metal probe fired (steel rod) into a concrete surface depends on the compressive
strength of the concrete
• Probe, of hardened alloy steel with a blunt conical nose which can be fired into the
concrete in such a way that it remains fully embedded.
• The tail end is threaded to facilitate firing, measurement and withdrawal.
• Probes should be of uniform length to within f 0.5 %.
• Different probes are used for normal weight and lightweight aggregate concretes. The
probes are typically about 80 mm long and can be expected to penetrate upto 40 mm
into the concrete.
• Some slender or flexible members may be unsuitable for testing by this method.
• Commercially available equipment has been developed in which the probe is propelled
by a powder charge and this clause describes only this method of driving the probe.
• Driver unit, for firing probes into the concrete with an accurately controlled amount of
energy. Different energies should be used for different concrete strength ranges
2. procedure
• test positions should be chosen to minimize the risk of structural cracking or
movement of the member under test and should be at least 200 mm apart and
150 mm from an edge.
• The thickness of the concrete element should be not less than150 mm
• Test should not be conducted within 50 mm of a reinforcing bar.
• Three valid measurements of penetration are required to give a result for a
location
• If the probe is not firmly embedded or if the range of depth of penetration for
three tests is more than 5mm the test is not valid and repeat tests should be
made.
• Steel rod/probe should be fired in concrete as per manufacturer specifications.
• Concrete rised with probe sides should be removed
• Depth of penetration of rod/probe should be note
• Check with available graph the influence strength
