There are three main types of samplers used to obtain soil samples from boreholes: open drive samplers, piston samplers, and rotary samplers. Open drive samplers consist of thin-walled tubes that are pushed into the soil to collect mostly undisturbed soft to moderately stiff cohesive soil samples. Piston samplers have a sampler cylinder and piston system that maintains sample integrity by preventing excess soil from entering the tube. Rotary samplers use a double-walled tube with an outer barrel that rotates to cut into the soil and an inner liner that collects the cylindrical soil sample.
