Past Perfect
Past Perfect
Used for:
• Completed Action Before Something in the
Past
The Past Perfect expresses the idea that
something occurred before another action in
the past. It can also show that something
happened before a specific time in the past.
Example:
• She had finished her homework
before she played game
• I had been to Paris once before
in 1999.
• Duration Before Something in the Past (Non-
Continuous Verbs)
With Non-Continuous Verbs and some non-
continuous uses of Mixed Verbs, use the Past
Perfect to show that something started in the
past and continued up until another action in
the past
Past Perfect
Example:
• We had had that car for 15 years
before it broke down.
• They felt bad about selling the
house because they had owned
it for more than forty years.
Past Perfect Continuous
Form:
(had been + present participle)
• Duration Before Something in the Past
The Past Perfect Continuous to show that
something started in the past and continued up
until another time in the past. however, the
duration does not continue until now, it stops
before something else in the past.
Past Perfect Continuous
Example:
• He had been to Berlin once in
1989 before he moved there in
1992.
• How long had you been
waiting to get on the bus?
• Cause of Something in the Past
The Past Perfect Continuous before another
action in the past is a good way to show cause
and effect.
Example:

• Jenny failed test because she hadn’t been

Structure: S. + used to + V.infinitive
We use this expression to talk about habits or repeated actions in
the past which we don't do in the present and use it for
something that was true but no longer is.

of a verb is the
base form of a
verb.
Example
• I used to have long hair.
= Now I have short hair.

Be/Get used to

to it.
