Palatal rugae are ridges on the roof of the mouth that have a unique pattern for each individual. These ridges are protected and seldom change with age or trauma. Different methods have been developed to analyze and compare rugae patterns for human identification purposes, including manual tracing and computer software programs. Studies have shown that rugae patterns can correctly identify individuals in about 97% of cases and may also be useful in determining a person's race or population, with some rugae shapes appearing more common in certain populations.
