sudden loss of memory of change in identity due to the dissociation (separation) of

South African President Nelson Mandela, who used South Africa s Springboks
rugby team as a tool to unite the economically and racially divided country that was
suffering by the Apartheid that lasted about 50 years. Yet Nelson Mandela made it
his goal to conquer the white supremacy and racial segregation of his beloved
country. Mandela s long journey and dedication for South Africawas duplicated by
Director Clint Eastwood s Oscar nominated film, Invictus. In novel Invictus by
John Carlin he makes Nelson s Mandela s accomplishment of ending the apartheid
more strategic and political unlike the film but kept to Mandela s character. Clint
Eastwood showed Mandela as powerful, yet approachable and humble leader who
strategically used the popular universal language of sports to unite post apartheid
South Africa. Director Eastwood balanced the historical significance of South Africa

This is to show my parents that I am in touch with me Muslim heritage, and to
show that I am proud of my religion. Also by using Arabic terms it shows my
parents that I enjoy learning and practising my religion which in turn would make
them proud. However when I am at school, it is a different context so I

The Plight Of Young Males
As discussed in a recent essay by Saul Kaplan The Plight of Young Males , there is
a serious academic gender achievement gap in the United States and as I will
discuss, around the world. Young women are doing significantly better than young
men, and the results are shocking. In the latest census, males make up 51 percent of
the total U.S. population between the ages of 18 24. Yet only 40 percent of today s
college students are men. Since 1982, more American women than men have
received bachelor s degrees. In the last ten years, two million more women graduated
from college than men. As Kaplan reveals, the average eleventh grade boywrites at
the level of the average eighth grade girl. He also states that women dominate high
school honor rolls and now make up more than 70 percent of class valedictorians.
Kaplan says, I am happy to see women succeeding. But can we really afford for our
country s young men to fall so far behind, (733)?
Historically boys were top of the class. Today that is no longer the case. A recent
article in The Economist discusses a 2009 study by the OECD (Organization for
Economic Co operation and Development) that examined how 15 year old boys and
girls performed in reading, mathematics and science. They found that girls are
performing better than their male classmates. This gender gap is worldwide. Girls
score higher than boys on tests measuring reading ability in every country in the
world (Loveless).

At EJ Thomas Hall Sunday October 9th, 2016 I saw Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane
Company perform. They performed the piece Analogy/ Dora: Tramontane. It was a
ninety minute performance without an intermission,but it went by quickly. It was a
formal setting. Most people in the audience were dressed nicely. I sat three or four
rows back. The piece was about the Holocaust. There was live music. There were two
musicians: one woman played the piano, and one man played the accordion, drums,
and sang. The dancers talked on stage, and narrated the dance. During most of the

It had a visible rhythm. The dancers started with just using the walls and dancing
with the walls. They dropped them to the floor, slid them into different spots, let the
walls fall on the them, and passed them to each other. Then they started to tell the
story. Throughout the dance there was unison dancing, non unison dancing, duets
with partnering, trios, and quartets. There was a lot of pedestrian movement
especially walking. A lot of the transitioning locomotor movement was walking or
running. There was lot of small little movements with the hands and fingers and
that was the only body part they were moving. They did movements like opening
up the hand slowly, twisting one finger, and tapping one finger. Some of the
movements were very literal, and visibly went along with the words in the story.
Other movements were not literal; they were very abstract. One literal movement
happened during the part in the story when the one daughter died from the failed
abortion. One female dancer touched her stomach as if it was in pain. There was
also contrasting movement. While one or two dancers were doing more complex
movement phrases the other dancers were doing simple movements like walking or
were in stillness. The partnering was untraditional and included weight sharing. The
females lifted the males sometimes which is unusual. For example, there was one
lift where the female dancer lifted the male dancer onto her back while she had the
microphone in her hand and was talking. Her voice did not change one bit either.
Different choreographic elements were used. One that was used a lot was repetition.
The end of the dance had more of a distinct rhythm than the beginning, and was

I believe that in the name of the piece itself there is a deeper meaning. If we look at
the name Four Pieces FOR Timpani with the emphasis on the word FOR , this
implies that he didn t intentionally compose the piece for an audience but for each

When regarding the different options I had in comparing two of the works we
have already read this semester, my mind automatically went to William Blake s
Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience. Blake s examination of the duality of
a single subject s nature lends itself perfectly to a close reading such as this. When
looking at the different options available to me in Blake s volumes, Holy
Thursday (both the Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience versions)
demonstrated this duality clearly. The subject in Holy Thursday stays the same,
however, the nature of the subject is drastically different in each poem. In both
Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, the poem titled Holy Thursday
occurs on Holy Thursday. This was a special service at St. Paul s Cathedral in
London, which was held on the first Thursday in May. The tradition started in 1782,
and this special service was held for the poorest children in London. These children
would be brought to the church by their parish officers, serving approximately six
thousand children. Both poems focus on this procession of children to the cathedral,
describing the state of the children and the varying attitudes towards the event itself.
These varying attitudes are what divides these poems that are so similar in content
