The Parents Under Pressure (PuP) Program is a 12-module home-based parenting program that aims to reduce child abuse potential, parental stress, and child behavior problems. The modules can be addressed in any order based on family priorities and are supplemented by liaison with other social services. Studies have found the PuP program reduces child abuse potential, parental stress and improves child behavior, and for every 100 families treated there would be an estimated savings of AU$3.1 million.

Use of the PICCOLO
This study aims to validate the PICCOLO assessment for measuring parenting skills by comparing it to the gold-standard Crowell assessment. The researchers hypothesize that subscales of the shorter PICCOLO will correlate with subscales of the Crowell when administered during parent-child free play and teaching tasks. Preliminary findings provide partial support for correlations between the Responsiveness and Affection subscales of the PICCOLO and Emotional Responsiveness and Positive Affect subscales of the Crowell. Encouragement subscales significantly correlated across assessments. However, correlations between Teaching and Behavioral Responsiveness were not significant or trending negative. This systematic review analyzed 23 studies on physical activity interventions in childcare settings that aimed to increase physical activity levels in children aged 2-6 years. The interventions utilized multicomponent approaches targeting individual, social, and environmental factors based on a socio-ecological model. Fourteen studies found modest increases in physical activity or reductions in sedentary time, though overall physical activity levels remained low compared to guidelines. There are significant differences in child mortality between high income countries and modifiable factors continue to be identified.These include biological and psychological factors, physical environment, social environment and service delivery. There is an inverse relationship between socioeconomic status and child mortality. So to reduce child mortality ,requires tackling perinatal causes and co-ordinated strategies to reduce antenatal and perinatal risk factors are essential .We need to identify evidence based prevention strategies which start in pregnancy and continue into the first years of a baby's life to reduce harm and build resilience .We need to understand what are the barriers and facilitators of behavioural change in pregnant women and health professionals .This presentation will outline some of the neurodevelopmental and anatomical changes in the child's brain which are most affected by forms of child abuse and neglect and outline current Scottish Government policies which are delivering on prevention , to make Scotland ‘The best place to grow up ‘.
Dr Katherine McKay has been a consultant paediatrician since 1995, working in areas of high deprivation in Glasgow. Her special interests are Community Paediatrics, particularly disability, including children with complex needs and life limiting conditions, child protection and the vulnerable child, and interagency work with social work and education.
She became Lead Clinician for Community Child Health in Glasgow in 2000, and Clinical Director from 2005 till 2010 covering all of the Glasgow City CHCPs and CHPs in a period of significant organisational change towards Integrating Children's Services across health, education and social work. She has been a fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health since 1994, Clinical Adviser to NHS QIS on the first Standards for Children's Services published in 2004 for Children and Young People with Asthma and then was an Associate Inspector for HMIE in the Child Protection Inspections.
She was National Clinical Lead for Children and Young People's Health in Scotland from August 2010 to 2012 and then became Senior Medical Officer for Child Health in October 2012. Since October 2012 her main policy input has been in Early Years, especially the Implementation of GIRFEC, in universal health services; the identification and response to vulnerable children by health services; Child Death Review Systems; and the health service input to Looked After Children. She continues a clinical practice one day every fortnight.

The study will compare prescription and reconstitution errors and time to administration between final year medical and nursing students using Prescribe4 versus traditional prescribing methods. Student pairs will be randomly assigned to a control group using traditional methods or an experimental group trained on Prescribe4. Abstract This paper describes evidence-based kernels, fundamental units of behavioral influence that appear to underlie effective prevention and treatment for children, adults, and families. A kernel is a behavior–influence procedure shown through experimental analysis to affect a specific behavior and that is indivisible in the sense that removing any of its components would render it inert. Existing evidence shows that a variety of kernels can influence behavior in context, and some evidence suggests that frequent use or sufficient use of some kernels may produce longer lasting behavioral shifts. The analysis of kernels could contribute to an empirically based theory of behavioral influence, augment existing prevention or treatment efforts, facilitate the dissemination of effective prevention and treatment practices, clarify the active ingredients in existing interventions, and contribute to efficiently developing interventions that are more effective. Kernels involve one or more of the following mechanisms of behavior influence: reinforcement, altering antecedents, changing verbal relational responding, or changing physi- ological states directly. The paper describes 52 of these kernels, and details practical, theoretical, and research implications, including calling for a national database of kernels that influence human behavior.
Holistic nursing research
This study evaluated the effects of dance therapy for people with schizophrenia or schizophrenia-like illnesses compared to standard care. A single study with 45 participants found that those receiving dance therapy plus routine care had significantly greater reduction in negative symptoms compared to routine care alone, based on PANSS scores. However, there were no differences between groups in overall PANSS scores, positive symptoms, satisfaction, or quality of life. The authors concluded that there is currently insufficient evidence to support or refute the use of dance therapy for schizophrenia due to the single small study available. Further high-quality research is needed.
Common components of evidence base practices

The article reviews 53 home-visiting programs aimed at preventing child maltreatment. It finds that only 7 programs that had clear objectives, theories of change, targeted populations and program components consistent with the theory achieved statistically significant positive outcomes in reducing child maltreatment. Programs with partial consistency had intermediate success, while those with no consistency had no success. Having a theory-driven approach with consistency between these elements can help explain the varying performance of home-visiting programs in preventing child abuse.

This case report describes a pilot study examining the effects of micronutrient supplementation on the emotional and behavioral regulation of three school-aged children. The study found that supplementing the diets of two 5-6 year old boys and a 14 year old girl diagnosed with behavioral and mental disorders with a broad-spectrum micronutrient formula for 12 weeks resulted in significantly improved behavior in the children based on weekly parent reports, as well as self-reports from the children of feeling happier. The study also found high adherence to the supplementation protocol and no reported adverse effects, suggesting micronutrient treatment is a feasible area for further research regarding improving emotional and behavioral regulation in children.

ADHD is a syndrome with a constellation of symptoms which is pervasive across life functions. A multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary, goal oriented program with proper compliance is required for maximum benefit from the program.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a tailored parenting intervention called Group Triple P for parents of gifted children. 75 parents of gifted children between ages 3-10 were randomly assigned to either the parenting intervention or a waitlist control group. Parents who received the intervention reported significant improvements in their child's behavior problems and hyperactivity compared to the control group based on parent reports. Parents also reported improvements in their own parenting styles with less permissiveness, harshness and verbosity. No significant effects were found for teacher reports except a trend for reduced hyperactivity. The study demonstrated that a tailored behavioral parenting program can effectively improve parenting skills and child outcomes for parents of gifted children.

Health Evidence hosted a 60 minute webinar examining whether family interventions can influence children and adolescents not to smoke. Roger Thomas, Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary, led the session, and presented findings from his latest Cochrane review:

Preventing children from starting to smoke is important to avoid a lifetime of addiction, poor health, and social and economic consequences. Family members influence whether children and adolescents smoke. This review includes 27 trials (23 in US, one each in Australia, India, the Netherlands, and Norway). There is moderate quality evidence that family-based interventions can prevent children and adolescents from starting to smoke. Intensive programs may be more likely to be successful than those of lower intensity. There is also evidence to suggest that adding a family-based component to a school intervention may be effective.

Abstract
The “One Question Question,” first coined by Dr. Lorraine M. Wright in
1989, is an interventive question designed to elicit family members’ most
pressing needs or concerns within the context of a therapeutic conversation.
In this article, two clinical projects analyzed the responses to this unique
interventive question. The first project analyzed the responses of 192 family
members experiencing illness who were asked the question in the context
of a therapeutic conversation; families focused on their need to deal with the
impact of the illness on the family. The second project examined responses
of 297 nurses who were asked the question prior to a 1-week Family
Systems Nursing training program; nurses wanted to know how to deal with
conflictual relationships between families and health care professionals and
how to offer families time-efficient interventions. The responses from both

In Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, India, with a population of 1.7 million people, only around 1800 have access to reliable quality professional services. Most pediatricians in the area have little awareness of the importance of early intervention for children. Developmental disabilities can be present from birth or acquired later in life due to factors like malnutrition, anemia, neglect, or lack of stimulation, and many acquired disabilities can be prevented by proper care and support during early childhood years.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
