What are beginning teachers looking for online? The TeachConnect story (and what can be learnt from it).
TeachConnect is a platform to support pre-service secondary maths and science teachers through their professional experience and into the profession. It has been developed over four years as a design-based research project and now has over 500 users across Queensland.
This presentation aims to share everything that we have discovered during this journey. It contributes a discussion of :
- the unrealised potential for online support for pre-service and early career teachers (to augment rather than replace existing support)
- the design principles for online communities of teachers that have been developed through analysis of existing platforms and multiple iterations of TeachConnect development with input from participants
- the design of the engagement strategy for involving all stakeholders within the state education system, with a particular focus upon the development of the online group and peer mentoring program
- real-world impacts and discussion of future steps
Finally, the presentation describes how the open-source platform could be used in other states. The work can be understood as a contribution to the vision of an online platform that is as useful as possible for pre-service and early career teachers. In summary, we believe this will continue to be achieved through: (i) widespread collaboration between universities, government and accreditation bodies; (ii) ongoing participant-led design and redesign; and (iii) convergence, for maximising benefits of a large community whilst retaining the benefits of enclosed spaces where deep reflection can occur.

This talk presents a number of perspectives upon a growing learning network of pre-service and early career teachers. The learning network has arisen through a collaboration between a number of Australian universities, with the aim of facilitating support in the transition between pre-service education and the first years of service. The talk is structured to refer to this example in posing questions more general to design for learning networks:
- What is the motivation for developing the learning network? Original research into the need to augment teacher support in Australia.

Designed for parents of children 18 months to 6 years of age, the EYCI helps parents quickly identify any concerns they may have about their child’s development across four domains: social and emotional, language, movement, and thinking and learning. The EYCI can be used as a discussion aid to foster dialogue about early child development between parents and practitioners providing early years services, creating opportunities to build relationships as well as provide education and support to parents to foster their child’s development.

Promoting Exchange, Enhancing Resources: How Connecting Organizations Improve...BCCPA
Improving workplace safety in continuing care often means undertaking significant culture change. Organizations often find themselves re-creating the same programs as neighbouring organizations, with similar outcomes. The PEER Resource Network was initiated by SafeCare BC to address two key issues raised by the continuing care sector:
1. Managers lack the resources to support the development of a safety culture within their organizations;
2. Continuing care organizations largely face the same root workplace safety issues.
In this workshop, participants will:
1. Learn about PEER’s innovative model and the preliminary results of the initiative (both quantitative and qualitative data).
2. Understand how PEER’s structure contributes to collaborative learning – and how this supports organizational excellence in workplace safety.
3. Engage with fellow participants in PEER-like exercises to glean insight into solutions for their organization’s own safety challenges.
4.Develop new connections to support the implementation of those solutions.

The conference brought together experts and educators with an interest in the impact of technology on teenage mental health, to share ideas and experiences, to learn from pioneering work going on in this area and to create a network of links.

‘I think that many forget we can find out who they are even when posting anonymously. It is
made clear to them when they become a member but they may forget this. They are often
shocked that we can trace them’

‘I also have a realistic view of what making a referral may mean for a family, which is some
cases may be very little as certainly in my area it is incredibly difficult to persuade Social
Services to pick up a case. So what I am saying is I know that if Netmums were to make a
referral it may not have any kind of a significant impact on a family. I think sometimes there is
a view that a referral will fix it all.’

’It’s about offering caring, helpful support to mums in distress or who have concerns in a
nonthreatening, nonjudgemental way, and encouraging mums to support each other.
Professional help and advice is offered were there are gaps or needs to help mums deal
with their problems/ concerns themselves.
‘Empowering parents to make their own choices. We can do that by raising self-esteem and
awareness of services.’
‘My job can be challenging, but I’ve never once felt like not turning up for work’.

14. Conclusion
• Use of digital technology to inform parenting will undoubtably increase.
• Online support services can provide an alternative cost effective service that can be
accessed from anywhere, increasing opportunities for parents to become agents in
their own support.
• Opportunities for collaboration - Netmums, Relate, CAB, Family Rights Group,
Women’s Aid.
• Practitioners need to constantly evolve to reflect the fast paced development of the
Internet - as researchers, as practitioners.
• Online support provides opportunities for reaching groups of service users who do not
have access to empirically supported treatments or need flexibility and at home
treatment.
