Oxygen therapy is the administration of oxygen at concentrations greater than ambient air. It is used to treat or prevent hypoxia. Various devices are used to deliver oxygen at low or high flows. Low flow devices like nasal cannulas cannot provide high oxygen concentrations but are comfortable for long term use. High flow devices like venturi masks and high flow nasal cannulas can provide precise oxygen concentrations but are less comfortable. Proper device selection depends on the patient's condition and needs. Oxygen therapy carries risks like toxicity and absorption atelectasis if given at too high concentrations for too long.
