This research aims to find the effect of perforation on the lateral stability of reinforced concrete frame
structure. Unreinforced brick masonry (URBM) infill construction is very common practice in Pakistan. (URBM) is
experimentally evaluated in this paper that how perforations in frame structures with masonry infill affect the lateral
strength and over all stability, which include; Strength, Stiffness, Ductility and Energy dissipation response factor. A
total of two full scale Reinforced concrete frames with unreinforced brick masonry infill has been constructed. QuasiStatic cyclic testing performed on each infill wall Reinforced concrete frame with unreinforced brick masonry to find its
strength and stiffness. Perforation in infill walls reduced lateral strength and stiffness of frame structures considerably.
Comparison on Repair and Strengthening Techniques for Unreinforced Masonry St...IJERA Editor
Masonry structures are estimated to include more than 70% of the residential unreinforced masonry buildings (URM) in the world. The structures are highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking which leads to unacceptably many losses, even in moderate earthquakes. Most of the losses are gave rise to by failure of masonry structures. As destruction of the masonry structures is usually not possible owing to several factors, this increases the question if the buildings had better to be retrofitted. Therefore, comparative study on repair and retrofitting methods safety of masonry structure has important advantages and drawbacks. This paper aims to investigate into repair and strengthening methods of masonry structures, advantages and disadvantages. In addition, we presented most suitable seismic retrofitting methods for unreinforced masonry structures considering efficiency and economic problems. It has been show that surface treatment methods and Re-pointing are more preferable for unreinforced masonry structures owing to their low cost as well as a no requirement for high working capacity.

Review on Effective utilization of RCC Shear walls for Design of Soft Storey ...IJERA Editor
Multi-storey buildings in metropolitan cities require open taller first storey for parking of vehicle and/or for retail shopping, large space for meeting room or a banking hall owing to lack of horizontal space and high cost. Due to these functional requirements, the first storey has lesser strength and stiffness as compared to upper stories, which are stiffened by masonry infill walls. Increased flexibility of first storey results in extreme deflections, which in turn, leads to concentration of forces at the second storey connections accompanied by large plastic deformation. In addition, most of the energy developed during the earthquake is dissipated by the column of the soft stories. In this process the plastic hinges are formed at the ends of column, which transform the soft stories into a mechanism. In such cases the collapse is unavoidable. Therefore, the soft stories deserve a special consideration in analysis and design
Review on seismic performance of multi storied rc building with soft storeyeSAT Journals
Abstract Soft storey is a storey in which the stiffness is less than 70% of the storey above or less than 80% of the combined stiffness of three storeys above. In a multi-storied building, soft storey is adopted to accommodate parking which is an unavoidable feature. This open ground storey is vulnerable to collapse during earthquake. Soft storey in a building causes stiffness irregularity in a structure. Due to this the structures undergoes unequal storey drift, formation of plastic hinges and finally collapse. The presence of infill wall improves the performance of building under the lateral forces. This paper deals with the study of literature of previous researches. These researches focus on the combination of measures adopted on the structure to reduce the effect of soft storey through static and dynamic analysis. The parameters studied in these researches are storey drift, axial and shear forces bending moment, displacement, time period, base shear. Also, it focuses on the equivalent strut approach to consider the effect of infill wall on the performance on building. From these researches, the interest arises to perform static and dynamic analysis to reduce the stiffness irregularity which is the main reason behind the poor performance of the building with soft storey. Experimental Study of Brick Walls with Opening Strengthened During Constructi...inventionjournals
Failure of brick walls structures can be caused by structural weakness or overloading, dynamic vibrations, settlement, and in-plane and out-of-plane deformations. In addition, the appearance of openings in brick walls has an effect on the load capacity and cracking regime after construction under working load. For these reasons, there is a need for strengthening brick walls with openings during construction. In the present study, a total of five brick wall specimens having a wall dimensions (85*65) cm and thickness (10) cm with square opening (25*25) cm were tested. The brick wall specimens were divided into two groups as follows, Group one consisted of one wall with R.C lintel 35 cm length as a control wall .Group two consisted of four strengthened specimens by number of horizontal plies of steel wire mesh (one, two three and four plies) embedded into bed joint mortar. All specimens were tested under static loads in regular increments from zero up to the crack load then failure load. In addition, wall deformations have been measured by LVDT. The obtained test results show that using one ply of horizontal steel wire mesh embedded into bed joint mortar gives an increase in the load carrying capacity up to 117 % from the control ultimate capacity. Using two plies of horizontal steel wire mesh embedded into bed joint mortar gives an increase in the load carrying capacity up to 136 % from the control ultimate capacity. However, using three plies of horizontal steel wire mesh embedded into bed joint mortar gives an increase in the load carrying capacity up to 156 % from the control ultimate capacity. In addition, using four plies of horizontal steel wire mesh embedded into bed joint mortar gives an increase in the load carrying capacity up to 190 % from the control ultimate capacity. The results suggest that increasing number of horizontal plies of steel wire mesh into bed joint mortar increases significantly the load carrying capacity of wall. In addition, ductility has been significantly increased. Thus, it was found that strengthening with this technique is durable, economic and easy to apply.

Comparison of Mesh Type Seismic Retrofitting for Masonry Structureschali090
The tremendous loss of life that resulted in the aftermath of recent earthquakes in developing countries is mostly due to the collapse of non-engineered building structures. It has been observed that these buildings cannot withstand the lateral loads imposed by an earthquake and often fails, in a brittle manner. This underscores the urgency to find simple and economic solutions to reinforce these buildings. Different conventional retrofitting techniques are available to increase the strength and/or ductility of unreinforced masonry walls. Recent years, several researches work on mesh type retrofitting for masonry structures to delay or prevent the collapse of buildings and reduce the number of lives lost during devastating earthquake events. This paper reviews and discusses the state-of-the-art on seismic retrofitting of masonry walls with emphasis on the mesh type retrofitting techniques include retrofitting procedures, cost, improvement in structural performance and limitations.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.
