How do you know where to start with experimentation? What if you don’t have enough information, or simply too much to decide where to begin and where to invest your time/effort/money?
In this breakout session we will cover how to cut the BS by treating experimentation as an “internal services startup”, where the customers are the teams in your business: commercial, trading, marketing, product, SEO etc.
You wouldn’t start a startup by hiring a bunch of people without a tool or an idea to work on, or buy an office or expensive work management solution for a startup of 3 people without developing a product and taking it to market first. So why treat experimentation that way?

Patrick McKenzie, Software Developer at Kalzumeus Software
You've run A/B tests.
You're long past the point where "Guess Which Alternative Won" articles teach you something useful.
- How do you get to the next level of conversion optimization?
- How do you get it to be a repeatable team effort?
- How do you retain organizational know-how about previous tests?
- How do you track conversions over more involved funnels?
- How do you keep the team onboard with testing for years at a time?
- How do you manage the engineering aspects of changes which are more in--depth than changing the marketing site?
This session delves into the "Here There Be Dragons" parts of the testing map. Patrick McKenzie, Software Developer at Kalzumeus Software and Bingo Card Creator, has helped a dozen companies through testing maps, and he presents some of the mistakes he's made so that you don't have to repeat them—and also a success or two.
There has been lots of talk on the importance of writing good and manageable code – code whose inherent beauty bring tears to the eyes of the developer that looks at it. This talk is not like that. This talk will focus on the techniques that are used by millions across the world to bring tears to the eyes of the maintaining developer, as well as a graphic stream of profanities. We will investigate some of the most common anti-patterns and half-measures that occur in real live code, and will marvel at the ingenuity and outright creativity necessary to create ugly messes of unmaintainable code that still manages to work for it’s users.

So your company has decided to take its documentation mobile. Great!
But just saying “go mobile” is too vague. Is it an app? Responsively designed online help? A mobilized web site? Something else? What effect might going mobile have on your documentation efforts? That’s the subject of this presentation.
We’ll first look at various definitions of “mobile” including apps, responsive design, mobilized web sites, and more – their pros and cons, and tools you can use to create them. We’ll then look at how you might have to change your documentation practices in order to move to mobile, such as requiring greater syntactical rigor, eliminating local formatting, using relative fonts and media queries to create resizable tables and content, and more.
You’ll leave this presentation with a solid understanding of options for going mobile and how your work may have to change to stay on the cutting edge of technical communication.

JavaScript has a well deserved reputation of be hard to write and debug. Put it on a mobile device and the problems increase exponentially. Mobile browsers lack all of the niceties that developers rely on to do testing and debugging including the most fundamental tool, the debugger. But it is possible to write quality JavaScript on a mobile device without relying on blind luck. In this talk I will show all of the tools and tricks that I learned in my 12 month development of the new KBB.com mobile site.
An overview of the way developers approach problems, for Entrepreneurs, Managers & Designers, to facilitate discussion and understanding. Developers are creative problem solvers who use words and logic to “model” stuff with objects, properties, methods, inheritance, composition, apis, and frameworks, to build: web sites, web apps, mobile apps, and iot in a repository on a stack with tools and tests at scale for our users.
At some point, the code you write today will be deleted and replaced with something new. This talk will discuss the life cycle of a large code base, and how to manage it over time to accommodate rewrites, giving examples from a major rewrite of the Firefox build and release pipeline over the last two years. You'll learn how to replace components of a running distributed system while keeping it operational, the proverbial replacing the wing of an airplane in flight.
How to Build Single Page HTML5 Apps that ScalePhil Leggetter
Developing large apps is difficult. Ensuring that code is consistent, well structured, tested, maintainable and has an architecture that encourages enhancement is essential. When it comes to large server-focused apps, solutions to this problem have been tried and tested.
But, how do you achieve this when building HTML5 single page apps?
In this talk we’ll cover the signs to watch out for as your HTML5 SPA grows and provide examples of some of the tooling types that can contribute-to as well as ease the growing pains. Finally, we’ll demonstrate how tooling can be used to support a set of conventions, practices and principles that enable a productive developer workflow where the first line of code is feature code, features can be developed in isolation, code conflicts are avoided by grouping assets by feature and features are composed into apps.
The demonstrations will use BladeRunnerJS, an open source developer toolkit written in Java, but the concepts are widely applicable.
A beginner's guide to setting up your development environment to build a very basic "Hello World" web part using the SharePoint Framework and resources on how to keep learning more about it.
Learn the real best practices and pitfalls of experimentation based on scientific research and insights. Hazjier is co-author of three studies on experimentation with Harvard Business School and his work is covered in the book Experimentation Works. This talk will dive into the best practices of experiment design, the role of hierarchy in experimentation teams, and the value of experimentation.
Atlassian's Mystique CLI, Minimizing the Experiment Development CycleOptimizely
Mystique CLI is an Atlassian developed CLI for Optimizely Web. It is a multi-phase project that is currently focusing on improving the development cycle for growth engineers. Currently, Mystique is the standard for developing web experiments at Atlassian, and is capable of a wide variety of operations utilizing Optimizely's REST API. This includes creating, updating, testing, and duplicating experiments/personalization campaigns, as well as "promoting" these entities between Optimizely projects for different environments (e.g. from QA => Prod). It has significantly reduced manual overhead and decreased development time by up to 95% for particular actions.
Autotrader Case Study: Migrating from Home-Grown Testing to Best-in-Class Too...Optimizely
Autotrader's Product and Engineering teams were ahead of the curve many years ago when they built a home-grown solution for leveraging feature flags to support server-side testing. Over the years, the industry eventually caught up and surpassed this proprietary tooling and the team had a choice to make: Re-invest into the local solution or completely retool. In this case study, Scott Povlot, Principal Technical Architect, and Seth Stuck, Director of R&D Analytics, will discuss their journey in selecting and then migrating to their next generation of experimentation tooling. They will discuss selection criteria, pros and cons, and outline how they were able to make the migration to Optimizely successful and lessons learned along the way.

Has the outcome of an experiment ever gone so strongly against your intuition that you doubt its correct implementation? This is certainly a possibility, as correctly implementing an online experiment is fraught with data quality challenges. There is a considerable amount of engineering and processing of data before it reaches the analysis, leaving plenty of room for bugs and biases to creep in. One of the strongest signals of an incorrect implementation is a sample ratio mismatch (SRM) - when the number of users assigned to each variation differs significantly from what is expected under the intended random allocation.
This talk will:
- Demo a novel SRM test which allows experimentation teams to rapidly detect if there is a bug in the implementation, even while the experiment is running, allowing developers to quickly fix the underlying issue.
- Provide an introduction to both the mathematics of the SRM test as well as the newly open sourced library which developers can immediately integrate into their platform.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
