This is my opening idea for my Media Foundation Portfolio.

Creation of an Enigma An enigma is created due to the use of
flashbacks to what the old criminals did
because I intend to make it so as the
audience is intrigued to know what they did
and how they did it. I also intend to leave
the opening on a cliff-hanger where
Detective Whittaker opens the door to a
disused warehouse - I hope for this to leave
my viewers on the edge of their seats
because they want to know what’s in the
warehouse and why he is going in there.
Introduction to Characters The members of the ‘Criminals Club’ will all
be wearing orange jumpsuits which help to
connote to the audience that they are
actually criminals because this is the
stereotype of criminals’ attire. They will also
be quiet/silent on the majority because they
are taking the time to listen to the stories of
Richard Hurst and also are reflecting on
their own time in the prison. The lighting
will hopefully be quite low key due to trying
to reinforce the idea that these criminals
have done wrong and therefore do have a
darker side to them. Fast paced, montage
editing will be used on the flashbacks to
help connote to the audience that their lives
used to be hectic and full which is then
contrasted by slower paced, continuity
editing on the scenes in the prison which
connotes that this is their reality now and
they cannot escape from it.
On the contrary, my hero will be wearing a
suit which enables wealth and success to be
connoted because ultimately he has solved
many crimes which have led him to be one
of the most successful detectives in the
country. The lighting on the detective will be
low key to connote to the audience that he
has a link to the dark side because he is the
one who has to solve a large number of
these crimes.
Setting Up Plot The majority of my opening will be the
creation of enigma to help try and keep the
audience engaged and wanting to see more.
The filmwill begin with a scene of the
‘Criminals Club’ sat in their circle, discussing
their crimes which will help the audience to

understand what sort of characters they are.
You will then only see the back of Detective
Whittaker as he walks up to the warehouse
which helps to create a sense of mystery
about this infamous Detective because you
don’t yet learn anything about him or his
personality.
Pace and Rhythm The flashback scenes will be fast paced,
montage edits in order to connote to the
audience that their lives were full and hectic
because of the crimes they were
committing. The scenes within the prison
will be slower paced, continuity edits to
connote that this is their reality now and
they find it to be a very boring one. The
ending scene where Whittaker walks up to
the warehouse will be one single handheld,
tracking shot to follow his journey towards
the warehouse and connote his high levels
of importance - this walking scene will be
calm and relaxed to connote his familiarity
with this sort of thing.
Mood and Tone The overall mood created will be creepy and
mysterious. I intend to do this by using a
fitting piece of music to help connote a
tense mood to my audience. The actual
onscreen content will also be mysterious
because it is creating an enigma about what
has happened.
