1. Q1)
Our title sequences conveys the conventions of Horror, by that the mise- en –scene,
matches Horror, in the narration scene there is a Knife and rope clearly visible to the
audience. Also the title sequence uses incidental music, every time the title a repeating
eerie sound is used, which builds the tension within the scene. Also incidental sound is used
to build the tension and the end of the sequence, when the girl is behind the shower curtain,
because it makes the audience think what going to happen to the girl on the phone.
Our sequence develops these conventions as the victim is seen getting a knife and a rope
quite early on in the sequence and walking out the door in her hand, but the audience never
see where she goes with it, and she is next seen in the behind the shower curtain, which
stereotypically in horror films something bad happens in a bathroom, so it makes the
audience how she got there and was she the one making the door slam, is the victim the one
who the bully saw when she open the door. Our conventions drop hints to the audience
about the plot, but never gives them the full story about the plot, leaves them on a
cliffhanger, which were our intentions.
The sub-genre of our title sequence is a physiological thriller, our conventions show this to
the audience subtly, by that our title sequence makes the audience think, and the plot is not
totally clear to them, by that they have decide for themselves if the victim is dead and
haunting the bullies and whether the victim has killed the bully at the end.
Other psychological thrillers, Psycho the most famous psychological thriller, influenced our
conventions, this is noticeable by the fact we have included a bathroom/shower scene, were
the victim is hiding waiting for the bully.
Q2)
Our title sequence is based around the clash of social groups within teenagers. The
victim gets bullied by popular teenage girls because she doesn’t fit in their trend she
dresses different to everyone else, so stands out so that is why she is bullied.
Gender is not really represented in a stereotypical way because there are no men in the
title sequence so therefore they are not dominant. The bullies in this title sequence
subvert the stereotype as they are two dominant girls who bully a girl that looks like she
should be dominant by the way she is dressed but instead she’s weak like a stereotypical
woman.
Our title sequence links to our target audience, as we gave our title sequence a 15 rating
so it would appeal to a younger audience. Our target audience is 15-17 year olds, and
the actors in our sequence fall in to that age bracket, and our plot is about bullying
because someone doesn’t fit in the cliché, and our audience would be able to relate to
this as this type of bullying happens all the time, within that age group.
2. Q5)
Rachel is 15, the last horror movie she watched was Paranormal activity
3. She enjoys shopping with her friends and going to the cinema with her
boyfriend. Rachel favourite sub-genre of Horror films Psychological
thrillers. Her all time favourite horror film is Psycho.
Our audience profile is who we aimed our title sequence is our target
audience 15-17 year olds, so when developing our title sequence we had our
audience profile in mind, and made it suitable fore 15 year olds by the BBFC
guidelines.
The mystery of our film appealed to our audience specifically when they
radio broadcast is on, teenagers stereotypically nosey so what want to know
what the victim was doing in the narration scene, so by just including footage
that doesn’t really link or you find out what happens to her, makes the
audience ask. What she is doing? This will keep them in grossed with the title
sequence because they will want to know what happens next. This is an aim
of a physiological thriller.
There are a few point of view shots in the title sequence. One of the shots is
were one of the bullies is walking out the house, and the camera follows, the
audience is meant to feel they are the victim following the bully. The impact
of this makes the audience think whether they are they meant to be victim
haunting the bully. There is another point in the title sequence were the
audience is lead to believe that point, is when the bully gasps when opening
her bedroom door and the audience by the camera work is could thing that
she has seen the victim.
By including these point of view shots it creates suspense, which is a big part
of horror conventions. These types of shots make the audience decide for
themselves who’s position there in and what is going to happen to the
characters. Making the audience think is a big part of what physiological
thrillers do.
From this screenshot, when we linked the video on to facebook, we got 5
likes from people aged 15 – 17 year olds, which is our target audience which
means it obviously appealed to them
3. Q6)
The strength of the original camera is that the quality, and it was easy to
use. The weakness was that it was a difficult to convert to go the Mac as
it recorded on a disc.
The college camera strength was the footage was easy enough to put into
final cut on the Mac and was easy to film. The weakness was the tripod
was not easy to man over the panning handle kept getting stuck.
When filming with my camera there was problem with the actors laugh to
overcome this we got them to think about something serious and we took
shorter takes. We encountered a problem we getting the footage of the
disc the camera recorded on to a memory stick to convert in final cut. To
do this I downloaded a converter onto my computer and I ripper, after a
long process I got the footage onto my memory stick. Then there was still
a problem with getting the files to compress in final cut, which we
couldn’t fix, because of the compression some of the footage is wavy but
that’s not the actual footage.
During the filming process we decided to re film some of our footage
because there wasn’t enough variety of shoots. This was difficult to make
sure all our actors and camerawoman was free on the same day. To
achieve this we had to cancel some of our plans. To do this to avoid the
problems we had with my camera we hired a camera out from college
because we knew they were compatible with the Macs.
To edit our title sequence, I used the program Final Cut, as I had never
used this before, I learned how to use it while going along. I have learned
how to razor footage so you can delete footage and keep the audio or
visa versa. This tool came in useful for when the footage was full of
people laughing apart from a terrifying scream, by using this tool I deleted
the footage and kept the audio, which I included in my title sequence at
the end when it’s a black screen. This effect fit in with the concepts of
Horror as stereotypically there is a usually a scream.
Garageband was a useful program for creating the incidental music that
was used in our title sequence, as there is ready made loops that are
specific to a key, so for horror I used minor loops, which you can mix, and
cut and change the levels. The challenge was getting the music to fit with
the sequence as it was too long, to do this I had to trim the sound down
in final cut, by clicking on it and dragging it making it smaller. Once I had
done this the sound match the visual.
