Presence in the Virtual Classroom
Importance
Especially online, students are looking for a sense of connection and
engagement; this, in turn, contributes to their persistence and success
in the classroom. It is therefore, of the utmost importance, that we
look for ways to connect synchronously to provide the personal
attention that students crave.
 Virtual Office Hour(s)
 Discussion Board
 Response Time
Student Feedback
Importance
Just as we need feedback to grow and improve, online students rely on
feedback to make progress over the course of the term. The more
specific and personalized the feedback, the better!
 Discussion board feedback
 Grading feedback
 Referencing a rubric
Grading Policy
Standards of Academic Progress
The purpose of the Standards of Academic Progress
(SOAP) is to clearly communicate the College’s
minimum expectations of academic progress.
http://alturl.com/5goj2

 B = Good
 C = Average
 D = Poor
 F = Failure
 FN = Failure for Non-Attendance*
 W = Withdrawal
 I = Incomplete
 X = Audit
 NR = Not Reported by Instructor
Grade Submission

through reporting your final grades.
Grade Changes:
“A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” “F,” “FN” or “NR” Grades
• Upon recommendation of the professor and with approval
of the academic dean
• If the faculty member is no longer with the College then the
Academic Dean will review and approve grade.
“I” Grades
• The “I” grade may be changed by the professor to “A,” “B,”
“C,” “D,” “F” or “FN” within the time limits specified in the
“I” grade agreement.
Non-Attendance Policy
Non-attendance drop
• This is a mandatory process performed by all instructors to stop
unnecessary financial aid debt.
• This window allows at the beginning of the semester allows faculty to
select online students who have not attended the first week of class.
• The drop process refunds money to the payment source.
Failure due to Non-attendance Grade
• The FN grade indicates that a student has failed a course due to non-
attendance.
• It is calculated as an “F” in the student’s grade point average.
• For students receiving financial aid, failure for non-attendance may
require the student to refund to the College all or part of his or her aid.
• The FN grade will be assigned by the faculty member at anytime following
the final withdrawal date for the course.
• Students who are in a failing status because of non-attendance but return
to the course prior to the withdrawal date may elect to withdraw from
the course.
