How Twitterate Are You? Teaching and Learning With TwitterAry Mas-Aranguiz
Tweeting is a literacy practice worth incorporating to enhance synchronous and asynchronous learning. Becoming a Twitterate educator involves learning to master the power of the hashtag, and understanding how to leverage the microblogging tool to hone learners’ literacy skills. Learn how to design formal and informal learning opportunities with Twitter communication in 140 characters or less. Tweeting in a globally networked public space promotes dialogic teaching and learning but also the art of writing succinctly and the ability to locate, evaluate and use information effectively. Learn how to coordinate tweet chats for academic discussions and live tweeting of academic articles. If “in the 21st century the illiterate will not be those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn,” learn how twitter ate you are; unlearn the misconceptions, and relearn how to improve learners’ literacy through twitteracy, a literacy practice for the digital age.

Cites are the primary source of carbon emissions but also can offer critical solutions to climate change. But rapidly redesigning cities perhaps one of greatest challenges. We share why we think startups are well positioned to play a major role in reimagining cities.
Increasingly, developers are breaking their applications apart into smaller components and distributing them across a pool of compute resources. Docker is fast becoming a core component of these architectures, but going from a single or a small number of containers to a distributed application is not trivial. In this session we will talk about some of the core architectural principles underlying the Amazon EC2 Container (ECS) and how they are designed to help you scale your applications and run them in production. We will talk about how containers can be used as the foundation for new computing primitives and how these are being used by our customers for increased agility and productivity.

Familievennootschap Rudy De Leeuw doorbreekt grens 1 miljoen euroThierry Debels
Streaming is necessary to handle data rates and latency but SQL is unquestionably the lingua franca of data. Where do the two meet?
Apache Calcite is extending SQL to include streaming, and the Samza, Storm and Flink are projects are each building it into their engines. In this talk, Julian Hyde describes streaming SQL in detail and shows how you can use streaming SQL in your application. He also describes how Calcite’s planner optimizes queries for throughput and latency.
Julian Hyde gave this talk at the first Kafka Summit, San Francisco, 2016/04/26.
Microservices is a software architectural method where you decompose complex applications into smaller, independent services. Containers are great for running small decoupled services, but how do you coordinate running microservices in production at scale and what AWS services do you use?
In this session, we will explore the reasoning and concepts behind microservices and how containers simplify building microservices based applications. We will also demonstrate how you can easily launch microservices on Amazon EC2 Container Service and how you can use ELB and Route 53 to easily do service discovery between microservices.

Using Collaborate Ultra for our Digital Delivery Teaching Events and for Esta...Blackboard APAC
Since 2014, Nossal High School has run a program of Digital Delivery Days where students are asked to remain at home and classes are delivered entirely via Blackboard for duration of the day. This year we have focused on the use of Collaborate Ultra for working with our students through their course areas on Blackboard. We have also been investigating solutions for encouraging classrooms to default to team-based learning activities, away from centralised AV (projectors and whiteboards) and believe Blackboard Collaborate Ultra may be able to provide us with a feasible alternative.
This presentation will report on the effectiveness of using Collaborate Ultra within our Digital Delivery setting and also on the early stages of replacing centralised AV within our classrooms.

Redesigning the Syllabus for
Digital Environments
Ary Aranguiz, Instructional Designer
Laura Dicht, Instructional Designer
#nyuonline
5. By the end of this presentation,
you will walk away:
● Understanding how and why
the genre of the online
syllabus differs from the
on-campus course syllabus
● Understanding the specific
components that should be
included in a syllabus for an
online course
Redesigning the Syllabus
6. You will also take with you:
● Suggested guidelines
for writing key
components for an
online syllabus
● A repository of
resources about online
syllabus design
Redesigning the Syllabus
7. Redesigning the Syllabus
• Asynchronous lectures
• Synchronous webinars
• Asynchronous discussion forums
• Active Learning Modules
We assist faculty in converting
on-campus courses to an online
environment.
As instructional designers, we design and develop
online learning courses which include:
9. The syllabus should:
• Do more than list course topics,
rules and penalties, institutional
policies and instructor contact
information.
• Be more than just a contract
between instructor and student.
• Not be too long or have a litigious
tone.
Redesigning the Syllabus
10. The syllabus should:
• Ignite students to think about why they are
taking a course, the course’s purpose
within the broader scope of the educational
program.
• Create a first impression about the
instructor’s passion for the subject and
his/her ‘withitness” to design a
constructively aligned learning experience.
• Serve as a road map to guide students as
they navigate throughout the course LMS
and outside it.
Redesigning the Syllabus
12. Our university has an existing syllabus
template which covers all the basics:
• Contact Info
• Course Pre-Requisites
• Course Description
• Course Objectives
• Course Structure
• Course Readings
• Course Requirements
Redesigning the Syllabus
13. Existing syllabus template
was missing crucial online
components:
• Communication policy
• Netiquette
• Virtual contact information
• Expectations for interactions
• Learning Time Rubric
Redesigning the Syllabus
15. Redesigning the Syllabus
• In order to simplify the process
of creating syllabi, we created
a checklist for faculty
• Faculty can use their existing
syllabus but make sure all
necessary information is
included
• Leave flexibility for faculty or
individual departments to
make stylistic decisions
Syllabus Checklist
17. From both a student and
an instructor perspective,
what problems may arise
if the syllabus is not
specifically designed for
an online class?
Redesigning the Syllabus
18. No Need To Be Static
Syllabi can be:
• Hyperlinked documents
• Webpages
• Interactive modules

• Many faculty have been following our
template for their online courses.
• Interaction policies, netiquette, required
software and links to required texts,
learning time rubric are just a few
components faculty are still working on
adding to their syllabi.
Successes and Challenges
27. Redesigning the Syllabus
● What features within the LMS can
you use to encourage students to
refer back to the syllabus?
● What components do you plan to
include in your syllabus?
