In 2008-2009, Project New Media Literacies tested the Media Makers Challenge Collection, a set of 30 challenges to explore and practice the new media literacies. This collection was established as a springboard for educators to adopt the new media literacies into their own situation. Media educators from Global Kids used the materials as inspiration to develop Media Masters, an after-school program at the High School for Global Citizenship to integrate the new media literacies into a social issues learning environment. Media Masters helped learners acquire and reflect upon digital media production and analytic skills through youth engagement in participatory media and Web 2.0 tools. This presentation will explore how theory and practice merged to create a conversation, rather than a top-down transfer of knowledge, between participating researchers, practitioners and students.
This is a large mixed deck with three main topic areas - what and why to use online interaction, some tool issues and facilitation. Very brief and not annotated, so may not be useful as a stand alone. Used at CIAT, Cali Colombia August 14 2007

Digital Connectedness: Taking Ownership of Your Professional Online Presence Sue Beckingham
Developing pathways to connectedness essentially commences with family and friends, but over time new connections outside of these circles begin to form ever increasing and interlinking circles. These informal and formal networks have the potential to help you unlock new doors to new opportunities. Social media can without doubt provide excellent communication channels and a space to develop your network of connections. Nonetheless as your online presence expands it leaves behind both digital footprints and digital shadows; and this needs to be given due consideration. This keynote will look at the value of developing a professional online presence and why as future graduates you need to take ownership of this.

This audience consisted mainly of HR managers in higher education organisations, so I aimed to show the rise of the networked academic and the advantages of networked practices by employees, and ask them if/how the organisation's policies enable or support those networked practitioners.

In understanding and designing effective and engaging interaction, we often focus on the moments of interaction the periods of minutes or hours while keystrokes, mouse clicks or finger movements across the screen elicit changing patterns of pixels and bits on computer memory. Yet these moments of actual interaction are part of a larger matrix of days, weeks and years, where periods of direct interaction string together to create larger patterns. This is the territory where user experience design meets service design, and HCI research meets IS. It is familiar to those working in CSCW where asynchronous interactions and workflows naturally take you beyond the system itself into the apparent interstices, that are, in fact, often the activities that interaction is about. The failures at this timescale are often errors of omission rather than commission, the things tardy, forgotten and undone. This is an area beyond the twenty minute user test; where motivation, opportunity and prompts to action, are more important than consistency, feedback and direct usability; where novelty may lie in the assembly of off-the-shelf applications; and success lies in life beyond the screen.
In my personal work with various colleagues I have myself encountered and studied these long-term interactions over many years including trigger analysis for understanding cross-organisational processes, and extended episodic experience. For this talk I'll illustrate with more recent examples including using spreadsheets as interaction elements with musicologists, island community communication and an onion skin model of social and technology experience developed as part of the analysis of my 1000 mile round Wales walk.

Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
