When we are looking for improvement, we generally start by looking at what's going wrong. This 'fix it' approach has some weakness even though it could produce some results. In addition, this approach doesn't drive any motivation nor positive energy for people that are participating to this exercise.
Appreciative Interviews, as one of the liberating Structure, is based on a paradigm shift. The idea is that instead of focusing on what's going wrong, we choose to focus on what's already good about the individual, team or organisation and seek out how to amplify it.
Agile Principle # 12 defines that at regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly. From Scrum to Kanban and other agile frameworks, this is accomplished through retrospectives and continuos improvement processes. The key to being a successful agile practitioner is to identify areas of improvement and then experiment ways of improving it. But it doesn't stop there; positive improvements ultimately become success stories for other teams and motivates them to experiment with newer ideas which eventually leads to innovation. A negative outcome isn't bad either since it adds to the experience of situations where ideas may not apply. Thus the key to this process lies in being a child, an explorer, and inculcate an experimentation mindset. The SLICE framework addresses this in the following way:
Share: Share an area of improvement
Learn: Explore the area for ways of improvement
Implement: Search & apply the learning to identify the success factors
Collateral: Publish blogs, white papers, presentations, etc. as observations of the implementation
Expansion: Grow, Seed, and Split in order to explore new venues for success

In just over two weeks, Japan will be observing the one-year anniversary of the disastrous magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that struck its east coast in March of 2011. The destruction was unprecedented and the loss of life and property were staggering -- more than 15,800 are confirmed dead, with another 3,300 still listed as missing nearly a year later. Photographers documented the many faces of this tragedy and have now returned to give us a look at the difference a year can make, re-shooting places that were photographed during and immediately after the quake.

He is a visiting lecturer at the University of Westminster, as well as a guest lecture at a number of other UK universities. Tony has written three books around the theme of building effective teams. His third book entitled ‘Big teams’ was published on 24 March 2020.

Paolo is a Construction Manager and Safety Manager with ten years of experience gained working in the transport infrastructure sector for public agencies.
In 1999, as a volunteer at an educational agency, he began to study behavioural models, emotional intelligence and cognitive biases.
He is a lecturer in project management for the professional chamber at Fondazione Ordine degli Ingegneri di Catania since 2018. He has also founded the professionals network reSTART that aims to provide companies with services to foster change management by creating a people-oriented culture.

Project Retrospectives are an important part of any software development process. The Principles Behind the Agile Manifesto state that, "At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly." How can this be done? By taking the time to reflect and learn and proactively determine what should be done differently in the next iteration, release, or project. Linda's presentation will introduce techniques for project retrospectives, whether they are agile or not. The techniques help teams discover what they’re doing well so that successful practices can continue and identify what should be done differently to improve performance. Retrospectives are not finger pointing or blaming sessions, but rather a highly effective process in which teams reflect on the past to become more productive in the future. Linda will share her experiences with leading retrospectives of several kinds for dozens of projects—successful and unsuccessful, small and large, in academia and industry. Her lessons learned can be applied to any project to enable teams and organizations to become learning organizations.
