Glomerular Filtration
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a commonly accepted
standard measure of renal function.
GFR is calculated from the area under the plasma clearance
curve, which required multiple blood samples to be taken
over a period of several hours.
Glomerular Filtration Rate
Indications
Calculation of dose
in chemotherapy
Detection of renal
failure
Assessment of
donors for
transplantation
evaluation of single
kidney function
Contraindication
Patients with ascites.
Edema or other expanded body space.
Patient’s Preparation
• Excessive intake of drinks containing caffeine including tea, coffee
and Coke should be avoided after 10 pm the night before the
test because of their diuretic effect
• recommended to avoid high protein meals before the study
• Some drugs can reduce renal function, should be stopped e.g.
diuretics.
• Note patient’s height and weight
Radiopharmaceuticals
• Cr-51 EDTA
Half Life : 27.7 days
Dose : 2.0 MBq I.V
• Tc-99m DTPA is also used.
Procedure
Explain the procedure .
Inject the Cr-51 EDTA .
Ask the patient to come back after 2,3 and 4
hours from the injection time for blood sample .

Conclusion
• GFR is the best test to measure kidney function , and to determine
the kidneys filtration rate.
• GFR used to detect renal failure and to assess donors for kidney
transplantation, also help to assess patient kidney function before
chemotherapy.
