The Challenge Network is a UK charity that aims to rebuild trust in society by connecting young people to their communities. The organization runs summer programs where youth participate in outdoor activities and community service projects in teams. They then implement and deliver the service projects they designed in the summer program. The goal is for participants to strengthen relationships and civic engagement in their communities. Initial feedback from a participant found that the program helped them meet new people and gain confidence in public speaking by completing a challenging presentation.

The grant proposal requests $831.96 to fund a youth engagement program between the Whitney Pier Boys and Girls Club and the Ally Club of Cape Breton's LGBT Resource Center. The program aims to address ignorance and lack of awareness of LGBT issues in youth by having representatives from the LGBT Resource Center do weekly presentations and activities at the Boys and Girls Club to educate youth and promote understanding and acceptance of LGBT people. The goals are to improve statistics around bullying of LGBT youth and prevent prejudice from developing in children as they grow up. A variety of interactive activities and games are proposed to engage youth, increase their knowledge of LGBT topics, and encourage empathy and allyship.

NOISE Spring Learning Festival 2014
The NOISE Spring Learning Festival featured various student pods presenting their social action projects from the past year. The projects addressed issues from the Toronto Vital Signs report such as health & wellness, poverty, civic engagement, and stigma. The pods accomplished goals like providing care packages, raising food and funds, promoting healthy eating, and challenging labels in their communities. Through this work, the students learned about enacting social justice and creating change at both the individual and community levels.
What happens when you put business in community hands? Presentation Slides
Power to Change provides support and funding to help community businesses across England that are run by and for local people. This includes a Bright Ideas Fund for new community business ideas, support to transform local pubs into community hubs, and access to research, training, and networking. Their aim is to create better places through community business models like a 100-year old oyster farm rebooting a local economy, community bookshops and bakeries, and a community ferry improving local transport.
Research evidence
Students contacted the Royal Association for Deaf People to ask questions for a school media project about portrayals of deafness. The Association responded that deafness is not portrayed positively in media which lacks understanding. There is also insufficient help for deaf people through inaccessible mainstream services and limited sign language education. The students thanked the Association for their helpful responses, which aided their project in seeking to portray deaf people positively and raise awareness of the need for more support and services.

Bristol Urban Strategy
This document outlines a strategy to increase visitor numbers and membership for the National Trust in Bristol, England. UNICEF found that young people in the UK have lower confidence , weaker relationships and less civic engagement than in all other developed countries.** Children need a nurturing, trusting environment to develop as young adults. Without this, our young are struggling to mature into adults. The Challenge Network believes we can rebuild trust in our society by helping young people to come of age. Our mission is to inspire and connect Young People to strengthen their communities.

I didn’t really know what to expect of The Challenge at first. A leaflet came through our door and the outdoor stuff on it caught my attention. The best bit has been the whole thing, it has all been my favourite but maybe meeting new people has been the best, like Danni here (he is sat next to Danielle Scothern) because we didn’t know each other before but have got really close. Doing the Dragon’s Den was difficult, I have never done anything like that before and was pretty nervous. I think we have shown that teenagers aren’t all bad but that we can do positive things too.
