As reiterated by many authors, internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these things to connect and exchange data, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, resulting in efficiency improvements, economic benefits, and reduced human exertions. This is made possible by the communications models with the enabling technologies which make communications possible among IoT connected devices, although, with drawbacks. These drawbacks are the major reasons for adoption problems of IoT services by the society. This paper carried out an investigative study on previous works on the societal applications and adoption problems of IoT, IoT communications models, and pros and cons of IoT. Through the study, it was revealed that for IoT devices and services to be widely adopted with no or minimal problems, future IoT technology will not only address the known drawbacks but also will require hardware and software components that are highly interoperable, dependable, reconfigurable, and, in many applications, certifiable.

"Towards Value-Centric Big Data" e-SIDES Workshop - Slide-decke-SIDES.eu
This is the slide-deck of the workshop held at the BDV Meet-UP on June 27, 2019 in Riga, titled "Towards Value-Centric Big Data". It includes the presentations given by the speakers.
Einstein published his ideas and became a pivotal element in shifting the way we think about physics - from the Newtonian model to the Quantum - in turn this changed the way we think about the world and allowed us to develop new ways of engaging with the world.
We are at a similar juncture. The development of computational technologies allows us to think about astronomical volumes of data and to make meaning of that data.
The mindshift that occurs is that “the machine is our friend”. The computer, like all machines, extends our capabilities. As a consequence the types of thinking now required in industry are those that get away from thinking like a computer and shift towards creative engagement with possibilities. Logical thinking is still necessary but it starts to be driven by imagination.
Computational thinking and data science change the way we think about defining and solving problems.
The age of creativity - which increasingly extends its impact from arts applications to business, scientific, technological, entrepreneurship, political, and other contexts.

Information Technology is a platform for Innovation. We see many innovations around us wherein IT acts as an enabler. This presentation highlights some of the characteristics of IT, its desirable feature for enabling innovations and in general, its implications for society. Web 2.0 has revolutionized our world view and in turn this has a multiplier effect !
Just as computing and the World-Wide Web progressed through stages of maturity on the way to full acceptance, artificial intelligence is destined to do the same. By understanding the comparable challenges that were overcome and benefits achieved with earlier technologies, organizations can better see today where AI is heading and ensure that they are properly positioned to reap its full value.

Workshop on Knowledge-based Service Innovation2016
The world’s economy is increasingly service-based. More than 75% of GDP in the developed markets including Hong Kong are produced by services. Service innovation in both services and manufacturing sectors is shaping up as a significant transformational force in these developed economies. Accordingly, firms in developed markets are becoming service centered, and focused on enhancing the customer experience. Service centered firms often co-create value with their customers through the dynamic configuration of their people (knowledge), processes and technologies which, collectively, are known as organizational capabilities.
Hong Kong MAKE Award 2015 is open for application now! 2016
The MAKE Award is a prestigious global award, and it was launched in Hong Kong by the Knowledge Management and Innovation Research Centre (KMIRC) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2008. The purpose of this award is not just to acknowledge the commitment of companies and organisations in Knowledge Management (KM), but also to bring the public recognition to those organisations that have achieved outstanding performance in KM activities.
Seminar on winning recipes from best knowledge enterprises2016
The Global Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise (MAKE) Award is an international benchmark of best practice knowledge management. This prestigious international award was launched in 1998 and sought to recognize organizations which out-perform their peers in creating stakeholders values by practising knowledge management and intellectual capital management. The launch of the MAKE Award provides a platform for enterprises to benchmark their KM performance with organizations locally, regionally and globally. It also encourages local organizations to start their KM journey. Through participation, an organization needs to analyze its strengths and weaknesses against the eight assessment criteria and strives to make improvement. As a result, its productivity, competitiveness and sustainability can be enhanced.
The success stories of these awardees are invaluable for enterprises which aim to embark on a corporate KM journey, or continue to flourish from existing KM implementation.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Big Data is the hot topic. Advanced analytic capabilities is the potential benefit. But
Knowledge Management(KM) professionals are wary – we’ve seen corporations amass vast
amounts of data in their Intranets , which for many have about as much use as a digital
dustbin. We understand the important role of humans to provide context and judgement to turn
data into knowledge. However, Big Data may be a game changer, with huge investments in
technology capability. Join us at this Conference and learn if there is a role for Big Data in the
world of KM.

HKKMS Conference Nov 2013 - Synopses of keynote presentations
Keynote I: Creating the Future: The Intelligent machines
Speaker : Dr Ben Goertzel, Chief Science Officer, Aidyia Limited
The shift to a networked digital economy is creating a new competitive landscape for all organisations. The disruption
caused to the business models of various industries based on the new information economy has already been
substantial. But the revolution is only beginning. Big Data is spurring the development and broad deployment of a new
set of technologies with advanced analytic capabilities. Big Data in the context of global networks will be a primary
driver behind the emergence of a new generation of AI systems and more similar to human-like thinking
Ben will take us through the coming revolution in the ability of companies to sense, analyse and respond to available
data, with a particular focus on the role of AI technology in dealing with Big Data and the networked world.
Keynote II: Social makes sense of Big data
Speaker : Euan Semple, Social Media pioneer at the BBC , United Kingdom
Big business is excited about Big Data but data without context is almost meaningless. Context comes from people and
stories. We increasingly create, navigate and assign meaning to data via the social networks we take part in online. If
you aren't part of the networks or communities who are generating the data you are collecting then you won't know
what it means, and if you aren't trusted and connected to those networks and communities you will have limited ability
to do anything with it! Euan will describe this highly networked world that many already inhabit, that in the future will
become the norm, and which already provides rich and powerful context for data and information.
Keynote III: Cloud Computing and Big Data for Service Innovations & Learning
Speaker : Prof Eric Tsui, HK Polytechnic University , Hong Kong
Up till now, most of the adoption of cloud computing focuses on the automation and consolidation of traditional IT
services. As such, the gains are confined to the uniformity of control, cost reduction and better governance. Recent
adoption of the cloud have gradually moved into tactical and even strategic levels thereby demonstrating a high level of
gains for using the cloud. Such benefits include dynamism in business model compositions and speed and ease in
orchestrating service innovations in the cloud. This talk will shed light on how massive and rapid accumulation of data
in the cloud can support human-machine cooperative problem solving and re-define the landscape of Open Innovation
and Connectionist Learning via a Knowledge Cloud.
Keynote IV: "Big Data", a new resource to detect and INTERPRET weak signals?
Speaker : Nicolas Lesca, Université Claude Bernard , France
Scanning the environment to detect weak signals requires access to various external sources of information. Choosing
and accessing to information sources is an ongoing problem. Today, "Big Data" seems to open considerable
possibilities to access data of various type But in turn it exacerbates many problems : data overload, the selection of
only the relevant information, the processing of different formats, the approximation of information for sensemaking.
Thus, "Big Data" opens a wide field of research to help companies in their decision-making.
Keynote V: The Future of Information marketplaces
Speaker:
David Worlock, Chairman of BIIA , United Kingdom
The Future History of Information Marketplaces . This session is a reflection on the continuing experience of very rapid
change in the way information is used and traded . Will technology continue to be disruptive and create opportunities
for market disintermediation ? Will knowledge engineering and artificial intelligence at last take a full role in workflow
and process ? What succeeds the Age of Data and when ? In a world where everyone is a publisher and a librarian ,
what does the future hold for the people who currently have those roles - and the information managers in
corporations , government and academe who have assumed the functions of some of those roles ?
Remarks: Organizer reserves the right to amend the program without prior notice.
