The world’s economy is increasingly service-based. More than 75% of GDP in the developed markets including Hong Kong is already services based. Service innovation – not only in services but also in manufacturing sectors – is already becoming a significant transformational force for these developed economies. This workshop provides participants with: (1) an overall understanding of the fundamental ways by which a firm’s knowledge-based organizational capabilities enable service innovation and how these capabilities must be configurable and aligned with the enterprise strategy for superior value co-creation with the customers; (2) a holistic and in-depth understanding of prevailing practical methods for developing and aligning the service innovation models, processes and operations with both the espoused enterprise strategy and customer value proposition to achieve sustainable competitive advantage; and (3) to relate and assess the suitability of the strategy-aligned service innovation concepts, models and methods for their own organizations. Furthermore, to operationalise the above, the Workshop also focusses on the key business concepts and technologies for organizations to orchestrate service innovations. Among others, agile organisations need to possess dynamic capabilities, constantly explore new business models, and foster quality process management via good governance and flexibility. Advancements in Cloud Computing and Business Process Management (BPM) provide the much needed business and technological support for organisations to practice the above. The Cloud provides far more than just scale-able IT infrastructure but increasingly being seen as a compelling force for engineering on demand business innovations. Cloud-based services can be charged as pay by usage hence shielding many businesses from the risks that are commonly associated with launching a new business venture. In the Cloud, expertise, solutions and creative ideas can be sourced as well as the design and execution of collaborative Knowledge Work.

Andrea-Rosalinde HOFER a German national has been working for the OECD since 2003. She led the HEInnovate country reviews in Bulgaria, Ireland, the Netherlands and Hungary, and the OECD’s predecessor work on strengthening university entrepreneurship support in eastern Germany. The aim of HEInnovate – a key long-term partnership initiative by the European Commission and the OECD – is to support policy makers, higher education leaders and other key stakeholders to identify the actions they can take to stimulate entrepreneurship and innovation and to remove the blockages that can exist at the institutional level and the national higher education system, based on data, analysis and international comparison. To enhance the practical application of the HEInnovate guiding framework, a free online self-assessment tool (www.heinnovate.eu) was designed for HEIs to organise a strategic debate with key stakeholders around entrepreneurship and innovation, using a digital platform (http://www.HEInnovate.eu). The tool is available in 23 languages and currently used by more than 800 HEIs around the world.

Industrial as well as Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise development, based on Innovations and Technology is one of the most effective ways of helping the increase of manufacturing effectiveness in all parts of the World.
Accordingly, Innovations and Technology Development are the most appropriate way to promote and stimulate innovation activity in both scientific community and the industrial sector. This way the partnerships between the academia, research community and the industrial facilities in both public and private sector should be a back bone of further development of each society.
Based on those facts, part of the research activities of any academic institution should also be dedicated to increase entrepreneurial potential of the university students and development of the innovative approaches which will lead to larger correlation between large industry, SMEs and universities. This leads to high necessity of promoting the entrepreneurial university concept, as the only potential way to motivate old European academic institutions to change in the direction of commercialization of their research work.
The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of Hong Kong SAR in 2000 with a mission of enhancing Hong Kong's competitiveness in technology-based industries through applied research.

Exploring the Level of Computer Literacy for Candidates in Higher Education: ...Dr. Amarjeet Singh
Bahrain Polytechnic is a Higher Education technical institution established in 2008 (by Royal Decree No. 65 for the year 2008). Its main mission is to supply the Bahraini economy with a skilled Bahraini labour force aiming to contribute to economic growth and diversification. The Polytechnic ensures that its values of excellence, learning and innovation are achieved by designing curricula that meet international standards as well as national and individual needs through continuous consultations with the industries and international education institutions. The development of computer and technological literacy is a significant predictor for success in the workplace and is also one of the key skills that the polytechnic provides through its programmes to students and faculty. This paper explores how computer literacy and skills are acquired by educators and students through International Computer Driving License (ICDL) tools employed at Bahrain Polytechnic. The study also considers the challenges that hinder learners from completing the requirements of ICDL. If adequate numbers of faculty and students have already learned basic computer skills, then the question facing the polytechnic is if computer literacy should continue to be taught at all levels. To answer this question, ICDL tests were administered to ascertain the computer literacy level of existing faculty and students. The results of the tests will determine which ICDL tests students and faculty should be placed on in order to address their computer literacy needs.

The talk summarises the lessons learnt from nearly 200 cases of Knowledge Management journeys by Hong Kong and Asian enterprises. Much of the data is gained through the extensive number of student, consultancy and research projects carried out or supervised by KMIRC staff at private companies, non-profit social services organizations and government departments. The projects include KM readiness assessments, knowledge audit, strategy formulation, taxonomy design and maintenance, cultural assessment and organizational change, knowledge retention from near-retirees, requirements elicitation and selection of collaboration tools including portals, search engine assessments, configuration and continuous improvements, IC reporting and many more. The speaker will outline the challenges and their respective solutions, the theory-practice gap, as well as some easy “entry points” into KM.
This talk is an extended version of an award-winning presentation delivered at the recently held European Conference on Knowledge Management, Udine, Italy.

Accordingly, firms in developed markets are becoming service centered, and focused on enhancing the customer experience. Service centered firms often co-create value with their customers through the dynamic configuration of their people (knowledge), processes and technologies which, collectively, are known as organizational capabilities.
A Higher Education Institution (HEI) may have quality research capabilities and a number of centres of research excellence in various academic areas, but mere presence of a centre of research excellence does not translate to research impact for the institution (in terms of financial returns). A conceptual framework presented based on Author's practical hands-on experience in UK may be adopted to 'maximise' conversion rate of research excellence into research impact.

holding a workshop on "Social Media Strategies, Tools & Applications" on
8 March 2013.
This workshop will comprehensively outline the emergence and evolution
of social media, the formulation of a social media strategy, development
of social media guidelines, tools for analysing, interpreting and
presenting social media trends. First launched in last year, the
2013’s workshop has updated and expanded content especially in the
areas of case studies, tools, local and international trends.
Applications include how to apply social media for, among others,
branding, marketing, open innovation, and personal lifelong learning.
Participants will also work to develop a customised social media
strategy for their own organisation. Pitfalls and lessons learnt from

2. Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2017/18
Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD
Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue
their PhD studies and research in Hong Kong's institutions.
Eligibility
Candidates who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students at PolyU, irrespective of their
country of origin, prior work experience, and ethnic background, are eligible to apply. If you are
successful, you may pursue your research under supervision by one of more academic staff in the
Knowledge Management and Innovation Research Centre (KMIRC).
The Award
The Fellowship will provide a 3-year tuition scholarship (i.e. tuition fees are waived), a monthly
stipend of HK$20,000 (approx. US$2,600) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of
HK$10,000 (approx. US$1,300) per year for a maximum of three years.

Research Strength
KMIRC has an active team researching into both technology aspects as well as human and
organizational aspects of Knowledge Management (KM). Currently, there are five focuses of research
in the Centre:
▪ Knowledge Systems Technologies;
▪ Cloud Services and Open Innovation;
▪ Intellectual Capital Management and Organizational Learning;
▪ Knowledge Management Models, Theories and Practices; and
▪ Knowledge Elicitation and Knowledge Audit
In August 2015, KMIRC further offered PolyU’s first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) ISE101x
Knowledge Management and Big Data in Business on the MIT edX platform. It was hugely successful
with more than 60,000 registrations today it remains one of key MOOCs on KM.
3. Ir Professor W.B. LEE

Director of the Knowledge Management and Innovation Research Centre
In 2002, Prof. Lee established the Knowledge Solution Laboratory in the PolyU - Microsoft Enterprise
Systems Centre, the first of its kind in Hong Kong and has pioneered research and practice of KM in
Hong Kong for various industrial sectors which include manufacturing, trading, public utilities, various
government departments and health care. He is currently the chief editor of the International Journal of
Knowledge and Systems Science, co-Editor of the Journal of Information and Knowledge Management
Systems, and associate editor of the International Journal of Learning and Intellectual Capital and
Learning. His research interest includes manufacturing technology and strategy, knowledge management,
organizational learning, intellectual capital-based management and open service innovation.

Professor Eric Tsui
Professor and
Associate Director, Knowledge Management and Innovation Research Centre
Prof. Tsui joined Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in 1989 after years of academic research in automated
knowledge acquisition, natural language processing, case-based reasoning and knowledge engineering tools.
He has designed and delivered numerous public and custom-designed knowledge management and
technologies workshops. His research strengths include cloud-based business innovation and knowledge
services. He has also consulted for many government departments and private organizations in Australia, Hong
Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Brunei. Professor Tsui is an honorary advisor of KM to the Police
College, Hong Kong Police Force and the Correctional Services Department, HKSARG. He is a recipient of
the KM Leadership Award and KM and Intellectual Capital Excellence Award in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
In 2016, he was the Platinum Winner in the LearnX Impact Award for Best E-Learning design.

Professor Benny Cheung
Professor and
Associate Director, Knowledge Management and Innovation Research Centre
Prof. Cheung has been conducting research into knowledge and technology management (KTM) since
2004. His research in KTM encompasses a broad range of methods and tools built on a basis of
Information Processing and Artificial Intelligence technologies for supporting the management of
knowledge and technology catered for various industries such as manufacturing, transportation, social
service, public utilities, etc. He has also conducted research on knowledge auditing, intellectual capital
management (ICM), technology roadmapping and assessment for enhancing innovation and learning
capability in firms and organizations. Currently, he is the programme leader of the Master of Science in
Technology Management in the Department.

Assistant Professor
Dr Park received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), specializing in technology and
innovation management. He is investigating “why some firms are dominating and why some other firms are
sluggish in the face of radical technological changes ?” To address the question, his research is currently
exploring the relationships between innovation adoption timing and make-buy sourcing strategy choice. His
articles are appearing in Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Management, and Research Policy.
He also has diverse consulting and special lecture experience for companies such as AeKyung Cor.,
DongHwa Group, DooSan Group, Halla Group, Mando Cor, etc.
