What is Open Government Data (OGD)?

 Open Data: data that can be freely used, reused and
redistributed by anyone.*

 Government Data: data and information produced or
commissioned by government or government controlled
entities.*

 Not sensitive or private information but core public data
on transport, infrastructure, education, health, crime,
environment, etc.

Examples of OGD

 Zoned land for commercial/green/residential use
 Polling stations and election turnout
 Enrolments at schools and in funded pre-school
education
 Bathing water quality
 Noise maps
 Street lighting
 Bring banks

 Vehicle licensing statistics

 To highlight deficiencies, mistakes and inaccuracies
within government?

 To rebuild trust between citizens and government,
 identify room for improvement,
 encourage new solutions, and
 remove inefficiencies.

Accountability

 To hold one person or organisation responsible for
errors?

 To add objectivity to government,
 validate resource allocation,
 improve public-sector decision making, and
 promote a fair public system.

Participation

 Opening up data naturally encourages
comments, feedback, critique, insights, recommendation
s, queries....
 Starts a two-way discussion
 Enables government to respond to real-time needs of
citizens
