Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Current EMC Customers? Isilon or XIO?
VNX – Dual Controller, Active Passive…Scale UP!
Isilon – NAS Leader, >16TB, Scale OUT with nodes
XtremIO – All Flash Array – Scale OUT with 1 x 4 “Bricks”, critical data
Scale Up – grow capacity and performance by adding trays of disks. Controllers could become the bottleneck.
Scale Out – grown by adding nodes, bricks, etc. Linear scale for perf and capacity!
Unstructured – high capacity, high growth rate, how to manage
Structured – Oracle, SQL, Exchange, SharePoint, ERP, etc. Critical data that drives the business. Increased performance, low latency, important SLAs.
Nov 2013 – Less than a year GA. #1 AFA…Market Leader

Infiniband – RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access)
Let’s dig down one more layer – into four key areas that make XtremIO unique in the marketplace:
Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.
Content-Based Data Placement:
It enables scale-out, balance and a native data reduction capability
Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.
Dual-Stage Metadata Engine:
Most modern storage arrays are internally ‘virtualized’ and maintains a table between hosts and array. XtremIO does this in two stages and two different mappings that lead to more consistent and predictable performance….without the need for any system-wide garbage collection
(Note to Presenter: Garbage collection is a process that other flash arrays/appliances go through that lead to inconsistent and unpredictable performance)
Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.
XtremIO Data Protection or XDP:
We didn’t just use disk-based RAID for XtremIO….we went one step further.
XtremIO built a new kind of data protection that is specific to flash/SSD and specific to supporting overwrites into the flash….which avoids system-wide ‘garbage collection’.
XDP provides the best blend of capacity, endurance and performance for your business applications.
Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.
Shared In-Memory Metadata:
The benefit is copy-services in the array….such as, in-line data reduction, thin provisioning and VAAI cloning for VMware environments (all internal to XtremIO) and further setting XtremIO apart from the other flash appliances in the marketplace.
Content-Based Data Placement:
It enables scale-out, balance and a native data reduction capability.
Dedup and Compression (This month!)
5:1 – 10:1 for VDI (Dedup)
2:1 – 3:1 for DBs (Compression)
6:1 for VSI
Dual-Stage Metadata Engine:
Most modern storage arrays are internally ‘virtualized’ and maintains a table between hosts and array. XtremIO does this in two stages and two different mappings that lead to more consistent and predictable performance….without the need for any system-wide garbage collection
(Note to Presenter: Garbage collection is a process that other flash arrays/appliances go through that lead to inconsistent and unpredictable performance)
XtremIO Data Protection or XDP:
Combines the performance of Raid 1, the efficiency of Raid 5, and data protection of Raid 6.
Ultra-Low Overhead - ~8%
N+2 – tolerant of 2 SSD loss
Rapid Rebuild Times – pulls from remaining 24 drives in parallel
Flash Endurance – fewer writes per stripe update
XtremIO built a new kind of data protection that is specific to flash/SSD and specific to supporting overwrites into the flash….which avoids system-wide ‘garbage collection’.
XDP provides the best blend of capacity, endurance and performance for your business applications.
No RGs, Pools, Tiers, Policies, Hot Spares

The NL-Series is designed to provide cost-effective, large-capacity storage. (36TB to 144 TB per node)
To achieve this, the NL-Series combines high density and efficiency with massive capacity capabilities. The result is a highly economical scale-out storage solution at an extremely attractive price per terabyte of capacity and low overall TCO.
The NL-Series is a great solution for large-scale data archiving.

OneFS can truly scale from as small as 16 TB to over 20 PB in a single file system, which eliminates the issues with conventional scale-up file systems.
With Isilon, a new node can be added to the cluster and be ready to use in about a minute, versus a traditional file system that can take hours to install, configure, and provision.
Isilon has the fastest performance and capacity scaling in the industry.

Isilon storage systems are extremely simple to manage and easy to use.
A single file volume spans all nodes in an Isilon cluster
Directories and data files are “striped” automatically across the cluster
The automatic “striping” across the cluster along with Isilon’s auto-balancing capability means that you save IT staff time and increase IT productivity because there is:
NO manual intervention
NO reconfiguration
NO server or client mount point or application changes
NO data migrations
NO RAID to manage
This slide provides more detail on the Isilon AutoBalance feature.

As new data is loaded into the Isilon storage system, AutoBalance distributes the data uniformly across all of the nodes in the cluster. This enables you to have a highly efficient storage system that provides over 80 percent storage utilization.
With AutoBalance, when new storage nodes are added to an Isilon storage cluster, data is automatically moved to the new storage nodes while the system is online and in production. This eliminates “hot spots” and reduces costs, complexity, and risks for scaling storage.
