backups for rapid restore, but
immediately replicates them to
the cloud for off-site storage
 Optimized for meeting backup
and recovery windows
NetApp AltaVault primary use cases
Cold storage
 For organizations with large
volumes of data that are
infrequently accessed and/or
need to be retained for a long
time
 Only metadata is kept locally; all
data is immediately replicated to
the cloud
 Optimized for scale

Technology and architecture

Key components needed for backup to cloud
 Data optimization
 Shrinking data to the smallest size possible provides best usage of cloud storage as
well as fast replication
 High-performance ingest and replication
 Scalable local capacity (cache)
 Capacity of local cache scales by adding disk packs and disk shelves
 Virtual appliances offer up to 32TB local cache
 Physical appliances offer 32TB and higher local cache, up to more than 500TB
 Strong security and encryption
 Data is encrypted before being written to disk (encryption at rest)
 Replication to cloud through encrypted connect (encryption in flight)
 Data in the cloud remains encrypted
 Keys are kept on appliance, not stored with the data in the cloud
© 2015 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. NetApp Confidential – Limited Use23
Data optimization
Inline variable segment length finds
more duplicate data than fixed-block
solutions
 More matches allow greater
reduction of data
 Yields maximum data reduction
 Compression further compacts data
 Data is grouped into slabs to
optimize transmission and storage
within the cloud

NetApp® AltaVault® storage decreases datasets, allowing you to store 10 to 30 times
more on average.
Automatically detects stream insertions and format
NetApp AltaVault automatic format optimization
 NetApp® AltaVault® storage intelligently optimizes deduplication
 Provides AltaVault’s highest level of deduplication
 Detects markers inserted to data streams by backup applications
 Not all competing appliances offer this feature
 Automatic detection of backup application files
 Handles multiple backup applications concurrently
 Automatic optimization of segments from 512 bytes to 32k bytes

Data pinning limits
 Up to 50% of data can be pinned by default
 Maximum pinned limit can be modified from:
27
10% 80
%
Data pinned <50%
Data pinned = 50% (alarm raised)
Data pinned >50% + Δ (encodes into pinned shares fail)

 Hardened version of Linux
 Export key with configuration for
disaster recovery
 Passphrase to protect exported keys
 Encryption at rest and in flight
NetApp AltaVault security
 Keys stored in secure vault
 Keys managed locally; not moved
without admin action
 Key rotation feature
 Compliant with FIPS 140-2 Level 1
© 2015 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. NetApp Confidential – Limited Use28
Cloud agility
 Ability to migrate seamlessly from one cloud storage solution to another
 Migrate data to new cloud with minimum downtime
29
Old Cloud Provider New Cloud Provider

Cloud agility features
 Two-step process to enable the migration—provide new cloud
configuration and start migration
 Encodes are not stopped, so customer can continue to back up data
 New data is not replicated until the migration completes (replication
pauses)
 Customer can track the progress
 Clouds will be switched automatically in the end
 CLI only feature
 Not available for moving from AWS Glacier

NetApp AltaVault virtual appliance
Virtual models
 AVA-v8, AVA-v16, AVA-v32
 Provided for either VMware ESXi or Microsoft Hyper-V
 Customer deploys in its datacenter
 Licenses
 Models come with a 90-day evaluation license
 Customers who purchase enter a license key for the appliance
 Getting the virtual appliance
 Download from the software download section on the NetApp Support site
 AVA-v8 model is downloaded and can be converted to a larger model after deployment
32 © 2015 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. NetApp Confidential – Limited Use
Provisioning a virtual appliance
 There is only one VM template for each hypervisor type
 Download the appropriate virtual appliance (ESXi or Hyper-V) from the
software downloads section on the NetApp Support site (NOTE: Some
configuration needs to be done before first boot!)
 When the VM boots it has the AVA-v8 personality
 For evaluation using the 90-day license
 Change to a larger model by using the model-upgrade command
 Log in to the CLI using SSH or open the console and from configure mode enter
license model-upgrade
 For purchases
 Enter the license key and the correct model will be set
Changing the model
© 2015 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. NetApp Confidential – Limited Use33
Provisioning a virtual appliance
 VMware hypervisor; greater than 2TB requires raw device mapping
(RDM)
 For best performance utilize thick provisioning
 Using a smaller data disk is supported; will also limit cloud capacity
 Recommended disk provisioning capacity

AVA-v8 8TB 2TB 10TB
AVA-v16 16TB 4TB 20TB
AVA-v32 32TB 8TB 40TB
Provisioning a virtual appliance
 The virtual memory allocation has to be set for the appliance
 It should be exactly the amount needed for the virtual model in use
 The optimization service will not start if there is not enough memory
 Adding more memory than is recommended does not provide a benefit
Virtual memory (RAM)

AVA-v8 24GB
AVA-v16 48GB
AVA-v32 96GB
Provisioning a virtual appliance
 The virtual CPU allocation has to be set for the appliance
 It should be exactly the amount needed for the virtual model in use
 They can be either virtual CPUs or vCPU cores or a combination

First boot of a virtual appliance
 On first boot of a virtual appliance the data disk will be formatted and
configured (the RDM or VMDK that was added to the VM settings)
 Open a console window
 After the boot completes, the login will be shown
 The default login is
 admin
 password
 After logging in, the setup wizard will ask for:
 Network settings for primary interface
 New admin password
 See the installation guides located in the NetApp Support site
documentation section for details on installation and configuration

  • 23. Key components needed for backup to cloud  Data optimization  Shrinking data to the smallest size possible provides best usage of cloud storage as well as fast replication  High-performance ingest and replication  Scalable local capacity (cache)  Capacity of local cache scales by adding disk packs and disk shelves  Virtual appliances offer up to 32TB local cache  Physical appliances offer 32TB and higher local cache, up to more than 500TB  Strong security and encryption  Data is encrypted before being written to disk (encryption at rest)  Replication to cloud through encrypted connect (encryption in flight)  Data in the cloud remains encrypted  Keys are kept on appliance, not stored with the data in the cloud © 2015 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. NetApp Confidential – Limited Use23
  • 24. Data optimization Inline variable segment length finds more duplicate data than fixed-block solutions  More matches allow greater reduction of data  Yields maximum data reduction  Compression further compacts data  Data is grouped into slabs to optimize transmission and storage within the cloud Deduplication technology overview © 2015 NetApp, Inc.
