William the Conqueror's invasion of England in 1066 led to changes in the English language and culture. Sir Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte d'Arthur while in prison, drawing on French legends to create stories about King Arthur that became hugely popular and helped establish prose as an artistic medium. However, Malory frequently ran afoul of the Norman authorities through various criminal acts and spent time imprisoned.
