ElasticES-Hadoop: Bridging the world of Hadoop and ElasticsearchMapR Technologies
In this talk, we will provide an overview of Elasticsearch for Apache Hadoop (ES-Hadoop), which includes integrations between the various Hadoop libraries, whether batch (Map/Reduce, Pig, Hive) or stream oriented (such as Apache Spark). We will also cover the YARN support and the HDFS snapshot/restore plugin available as part of ES-Hadoop. We will talk about the upcoming ES-Hadoop 2.1 GA release and near-term roadmap.

MongoDB Chunks - Distribution, Splitting, and MergingJason Terpko
MongoDB Chunks – Distribution, Splitting, and Merging This presentation will discuss how the distribution of chunks can create scenarios where you may need to manually move, split, or merge chunks in your sharded cluster. Scenarios requiring these actions can exist with both optimal and sub-optimal shard keys. This can be especially true when a new change has been introduced to the workload. It may cause hot-spotting, unbalanced storage, or empty chunks.
Terraform is an Infrastructure as Code tool for declaratively building and maintaining complex infrastructures on one or more cloud providers/services. But Terraform also supports over 80 non-infrastructure providers! In this demo-driven talk, will dive into the internals of Terraform and see how it works. We will show how Terraform can be used for non-infrastructure use cases by showing examples. We’ll also take a look at on how you can extend Terraform to manage anything with an API.

Brian Brownlow is an experienced senior analyst programmer for Mayo Clinic. He is made a workshop presentation at the 2014 BDPA Technology Conference on the topic, 'Big Data Implementation - Mayo Clinic Case Study'. This presentation will show part of the Mayo Clinic story on the embarking of an exploration of the application of `Big Data' technologies. `Big Data' is seen as one set of tools that can be used to enhance medical research, medical education and practice management. Mayo Clinic is always searching for better, faster and cheaper ways to use its data to improve patient care and sustain financial outcomes in a challenging reimbursement environment. Our approach uses several components that are open source and combines them with data from various sources to provide information to decision makers in near real time. We have created a center of `Big Data' excellence using in-house staff and vendor engagements. `Big Data' is one element of our Enterprise Data Trust framework.

So, you want to build a pan-national digital space for bioscience data and methods? That works with a bunch of pre-existing data repositories and processing platforms? So you can share FAIR workflows and move them between services? Package them up with data and other stuff (or just package up data for that matter)? How? WorkflowHub (https://workflowhub.eu) and RO-Crate Research Objects (https://www.researchobject.org/ro-crate) that’s how! A step towards FAIR Digital Objects gets a workout.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

8. Exported Resources
Common Examples
• Backend servers configured in a load balancer
• Monitoring Servers updated with monitoring
clients (nagios_host / nagios_service)
• Distribute public keys (ssh and openssl)
13. Ohai Node data (think facter) is
automatically added, indexed and
searchable in the Chef Server.
No need to export facts or resources.
14. How to use Chef
Search
Query the the Chef server data via
• Method within recipe (think puppet manifest)
• Search subcommand of ‘knife’
• /search or /search/INDEX endpoints of Chef
Server API
15. How to use Chef

What do people think?
Personally I feel this approach can sometimes
be better than exported resources approach. *

21. PuppetDB
Definition:
collects data generated by Puppet. It enables
advanced Puppet features like the inventory
service and exported resources, and can be the
foundation for other applications that use
Puppet’s data. *

22. PuppetDB
• Written in Clojure.
• Runs on the JVM
• Backed by PostgreSQL
• Scales horizontally
23. PuppetDB
PuppetDB stores:
• The most recent facts from every node
• The most recent catalog for every node
• Optionally, 14 days of event reports for
every node
• Exported Resources
24. PuppetDB
PuppetDB REST API
V3 API includes the following endpoints:
• Facts
• Resources
• Nodes
• Fact-names,
• Metrics
• Reports
• Events
• And more
37. Where to from here?

Problems with PuppetDB – puppetdbquery generates results based on compiled catalogs by the puppet master. We are not actually sure whether resources have been applied successfully
How frequently do you run Puppet?
Too slowly and infrastructure is slow to adapt to change
Too fast and there maybe race conditions.
