The nitrogen cycle describes the conversion of nitrogen between its various chemical forms and as it circulates between terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Nitrogen exists in the atmosphere as N2 gas and is converted to ammonia or nitrates through nitrogen fixation, which occurs through lightning, bacteria, and industrial fertilizer production. Plants and animals assimilate fixed nitrogen and it is returned to the soil through decomposition, where it is converted to ammonium through ammonification and then to nitrites and nitrates through nitrification. Some nitrates are taken up by plants while others enter oceans, and nitrates are ultimately converted back to N2 gas through de-nitrification, completing the cycle.
