In rural Nigeria, many communities depend on diesel generators, and pay a high price for harmful, polluting, unreliable power. Hospitals are often forced to close when power fails, and when life-support systems shut down, lives are lost.
The Lagos State Electricity Board (LSEB) selected Schneider Electric to bring solar power and storage to 172 schools and 11 public health centers in rural Nigeria.

Smart, Energy-Saving Homes: What's Stopping Us?Leonardo ENERGY
Smart, energy-saving homes utilise network connectivity, big data and powerful data processing. They can manage and automate services such as lighting, heating/cooling and washing in order to reduce energy consumption and provide load flexibility to the grid. Despite recent gains in building envelope and appliance efficiency, further opportunities remain to improve whole-building system efficiency through smart homes. However, there are significant barriers:
• High costs and unclear benefits: smart devices cost more and suffer
from a lack of consumer confidence about their benefits.
• Privacy, trust and security: consumers are concerned about misuse of data in the cloud, and hacking of data and devices.
• Complexity and technology risk: smart homes involve new and complex technologies which many consumers fear may not work as intended and are difficult to operate. Problems of interoperability between new and legacy devices are common and this tends to increase consumer concerns.
This webinar will examine these barriers and suggest a number of policy solutions. It is presented by the EDNA Annex (Electronic Devices and Networks Annex - https://edna.iea-4e.org) of the IEA’s 4E Technology Collaboration Programme.

Peer-to-peer energy trading using blockchainsLeonardo ENERGY
Rapid penetration of distributed generation technologies, combined with grid constraints, and disillusionment with non-consumer centric business models, is leading many to explore radically different configurations of the energy system. One such model, ‘transactive energy’, focuses on peer-to-peer energy trading with the role of the energy company replaced with a trustless transaction layer based on distributed ledger (blockchain) technologies. The proponents of transactive energy argue that it provides social, environmental, economic, and energy systems benefits. This lecture will provide a broad introduction to the field, before discussing the opportunities and limitations of this approach within the energy transition.

The energy industry is rapidly evolving to take advantage of renewable resources and Western Power is embracing new technologies that will improve service and reliability to our customers. New and improving technologies such as solar, wind, wave and most importantly batteries are changing the way we think about the delivery and storage of electricity. One of these developments is the microgrid, which is essentially a small scale power grid that can operate independently (in ‘island mode’) or connect with the main electrical grid – think of a small suburb, or estate, that shares electricity and the cost of the infrastructure. A microgrid needs to control the flow of electricity of low or medium voltage, but does not need connection to a centralised generation or transmission network. Western Power has trialled the world’s first microgrid project that combines wave energy, solar (photovoltaic) energy, a desalination plant, and energy storage that connects to our large electricity network.
Thair demonstrates extensive engineering experience focused on power systems planning and real-time operation. This includes experience in load, generation and microgrids grid connection, renewable energies, transmission networks planning and stability. This experience is supported by his academic research at the University of Tasmania and Edith Cowan University, including invitation to review international journals and conferences in the field of Energy Systems and Artificial Intelligence. Thair has previously held roles with Canegie Wave Energy and Deng Kai.

Residential and small commercial electricity consumers will provide most of the flexibility needed in the power system to achieve the energy transition at lower cost. This flexibility will allow the electricity grid to take on more renewables and need less grid reinforcements. Consumers are happy to participate (>75% opt-in rate) via an aggregator and be rewarded with energy savings reducing their electricity. Because it reduces the overall costs of running the energy system, it means that all consumers benefit from lower energy prices. The business case is now proven as more and more countries worldwide ensure demand side response can participate in wholesale markets as an alternative to generation and the EU has provided support through its recent Clean Energy Package. Pierre Bivas from Voltalis will share his experience of operating flexibility from more than 100,000 households in France, and now installing another 150,000, backed by the European Investment Bank, while also developing in other countries with local partners.

Do IT administrators violate arc flash requirements
when they turn off or reset a branch circuit breaker?
What about swapping out a rack power strip? Most
data center operators are familiar with fire safety and
shock hazard protection, but are less familiar with arc
flash safety. Three IT trends have increased the
severity of a potential arc flash in the IT space; higher
data center capacities, higher rack densities, and
higher efficiency designs.
This paper discusses these three trends in the context
of arc flash safety within the IT space. Arc flash is
explained, potential areas of concern in the IT space
are identified, and compliance with associated regulations
is discussed.
The Metals, Minerals & Mining industry has a resource
problem — operators that are untrained and subject to
a high rate of employee attrition; and plants that operate
at less than optimized conditions. To reverse the trend,
the industry must promote and accelerate mining
operations excellence. It must be done quickly, with
little room for uncertainty.

Riel Substation is Manitoba Hydro’s newest DC Converter Station as well as a major 230/500kV transmission station. Riel covers approximately 40 hectares making it physically one of the largest
substations in North America. The project modifies the existing 500kV international transmission line running from Winnipeg, CA to Minnesota.
This paper presents the analysis of the technical issues encountered during project execution such as engineering design, multivendor integration, GOOSE implementation, network infrastructure and cyber security. It covers also the organizational issues such as customer involvement and standardization, among others, lessons learned and recommendations for future implementations.
This is one of the first complete protection and control automation solution using redundant IEC61850. The technology being implemented within Riel Station is not only one of the largest Digital Control Systems on the continent, but is one of the premier systems in the world today.
As a partner of the Riel initiative, Schneider Electric has completed the engineering, design and manufacturing of protection and control panels for the entire substation using state of the art technologies including but not limited to full redundant system, NERC CIP cyber security compliance, multivendor interoperability and reliability as a top priority with 6 independent fiber optic networks, redundant protections, HMI and networks.
The implemented design permits a cost effective solution using the Ethernet Redundant Networks to communicate with others devices and non-hardwire traditional solution. The protection scheme solution is based on IEC61850, providing the protection functions and logics inside the different relays to
share and capture information required protecting the electrical network and facilitating the monitoring from HMI. By the time this paper will be presented at DTECH 2015, the 230 kV portion of the project will have been commissioned and energized.

In Africa, the potential for solar energy is immense. The continent is, in fact, is the brightest in the world. Its 30.37 million km² receive a solar irradiance equal to or greater than 2,000 kWh/ (m2 year).
In the management of the energy resources, increasing the production of solar energy and other forms of renewable energy should be the top priority for policymakers, if they are keen to foster the African power transition towards a more prosperous and sustainable future. The African economy is growing and and according to IRENA, the electricity demand should triple by 2030. Africa is endowed with significant renewable resources of all forms: biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar or wind. This great energetic wealth could change the face of Africa forever. In fact, the diversification of energy sources increases the power generation capacity; the energetic shift would then resolve two of the Achilles’ heels in the energy landscape: satisfying the rising demand as well as replacing the poor-quality supply networks with reliable and safe energy supply.
Pico solar PV systems development in Kenya as opposed to rural electrificationAugustine Okoth
Pico Solar homes systems use have greatly grown in Africa with Kenya taking the lead. Most rural areas do not have to electricity. Due to poverty most households cannot afford electricity either way, hence settling for kerosene or candle as their source of lighting. This can lead to health problems and is expensive in the long run. This study discusses power situation in Kenya. It explains why we need to embrace solar in the rural areas as compared to national grid rural electrification. Majority of Kenyans still use kerosene for lighting even though the Pico PV is very affordable. The government, donors and solar companies have a big role to play in promoting the use of green energy in the rural areas. This can be done by creation of awareness of the product and ensuring that the standards on the solar systems are met.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A 0.5 KW SOLAR TREE FOR POWERING FARM SETTLEMENTSIAEME Publication
Nigeria is a country faced with great challenges in the power sector. This is as a
result of inadequate administrative and technical efforts in handling issues in this
sector. Aforetime, the country has solely depended on grid electricity generation
which has proven to be unstable for several decades. These and others, has made it
imperative to introduce the use of renewable energy in addressing some of the
electricity challenges facing the country. The sources of renewable energy which
could serve as an alternative source of power include wind, solar, and biogas. These
can also be combined together as an entity to form a hybrid renewable energy source.
In this paper, a solar tree was designed and constructed to provide an alternative
supply of electricity to farm settlements in Nigeria. This is achieved by generating
electricity from a single or multiple number of solar panels connected with a charge
controller, a battery bank for storage and an inverter circuit to supply electrical
power. Depending on the electrical load demand and the applications coverage area,
the solar tree rating and specification can be a single-phase or three-phase AC output

More Electric:
Our world is becoming More Electric. Almost everything we interact with today is either already electric or becoming electric. Think about it. From the time you start your day in the morning to the time you finish your day – your home, your car, your work, your devices, your entertainment – almost everything is electric. Imagine the energy needed to power this. Electricity consumption will increase by 80% in next 25 years
More Connected: Our lives are also becoming more connected. The Internet has already transformed the way we live, work and play. Now the Connected Things is going to take this to a brand new level. 50 billion things connected in the next 5 years.
More Distributed: With such a widespread electrification and connectivity, energy models need rethinking as well. Which is why the generation of power needs to be closer to users. Distributed Energy is rapidly evolving globally. This is positive energy – renewable. In 2014 , Renewables overtook fossil fuels in investment value, with $295bn invested in renewables compared to $289bn invested in fossil fuels. And it is getting cheaper to do this.
More Efficient: When our world is more electric, more connected and more distributed, new opportunities emerge and allows us to tap into even more efficiency – in industrial processes, in the energy value chain, in buildings, in transportation, in the global supply chain and even in the comfort and peace-of-mind of our homes.
With more than $18 billion in M&A activity in the first half of last year alone, the colocation industry is riding the bubble of rapid growth. Colocation data center providers are being evaluated by a wide range of investors, with varying experience and perspectives. Understanding the evaluation criteria is a critical competency for attracting the right type of investor and financial commitment for your colocation business and this is why we have invited today’s speaker to present.

A Practical Guide to Ensuring Business Continuity and High Performance in Hea...Schneider Electric
Within healthcare facilities, high availability of systems is a key influencer of revenue and patient safety and satisfaction. Three important critical success factors need to be addressed in order to achieve safety and availability goals. These include exceeding the facility’s level of regulatory compliance, a linking of business benefits to the maintenance of a safe and an “always on” power and ventilation environment, and a sensible approach to technology upgrades that includes new strategies for “selling” technological improvements to executives. This reference guide offers recommendations for identifying and addressing each of these issues.
