More Electric:
Our world is becoming More Electric. Almost everything we interact with today is either already electric or becoming electric. Think about it. From the time you start your day in the morning to the time you finish your day – your home, your car, your work, your devices, your entertainment – almost everything is electric. Imagine the energy needed to power this. Electricity consumption will increase by 80% in next 25 years
More Connected: Our lives are also becoming more connected. The Internet has already transformed the way we live, work and play. Now the Connected Things is going to take this to a brand new level. 50 billion things connected in the next 5 years.
More Distributed: With such a widespread electrification and connectivity, energy models need rethinking as well. Which is why the generation of power needs to be closer to users. Distributed Energy is rapidly evolving globally. This is positive energy – renewable. In 2014 , Renewables overtook fossil fuels in investment value, with $295bn invested in renewables compared to $289bn invested in fossil fuels. And it is getting cheaper to do this.
More Efficient: When our world is more electric, more connected and more distributed, new opportunities emerge and allows us to tap into even more efficiency – in industrial processes, in the energy value chain, in buildings, in transportation, in the global supply chain and even in the comfort and peace-of-mind of our homes.

Within healthcare facilities, high availability of systems is a key influencer of revenue and patient safety and satisfaction. Three important critical success factors need to be addressed in order to achieve safety and availability goals. These include exceeding the facility’s level of regulatory compliance, a linking of business benefits to the maintenance of a safe and an “always on” power and ventilation environment, and a sensible approach to technology upgrades that includes new strategies for “selling” technological improvements to executives. This reference guide offers recommendations for identifying and addressing each of these issues.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

In summary
Our approach to innovation and business addresses the unique needs of Cloud & Service Providers
Editor's Notes
Thank you very much for joining us. My name is Mark Bidinger and I am President of our Cloud and Service Provider segment within the IT Division of Schneider Electric. I lead a team dedicated to understanding the unique needs of cloud and colocation providers. It’s our role to feed that knowledge back into our organization and advocate for the development of innovative solutions that will make a tangible difference in your business. Whether it’s understanding the technology needs of your end user or in bringing you infrastructure to bring capacity online quickly, we are dedicated to your success.
At Schneider Electric, in the IT Division, our core business has always been focused on delivering the highest level of availability to critical technologies, systems and processes. We’ve done this through our award winning, industry-leading and highest quality products and solutions, including UPS, Cooling, Rack Systems, DCIM and Services.
In this new digital era, we see a world that is always-on.
Always on to meet the needs of the highest notion of “access” to goods and services
Always on to be the solid, reliable foundation of digital transformation for businesses
Our mission is: To empower the digital transformation of our customers by ensuring their critical network, systems and processes are highly available and resilient.
Today I’d like to tell you a few stories and first I’m going to level-set us a bit. We will start by discussing emerging and burgeoning trends and cutting edge technology that is making an impact on service providers today. We’ll talk about the Internet of Things but not just in terms of demand, but in terms of advantage and implementation.
Finally I’d like to take a few minutes and put on my future glasses to give you some thought-starters and some data to help you plan for the next wave. At the end we will have time for Q&A so please, feel free to ask any questions.
We agree that data centers are critical – that’s why we’re in this business. So let’s talk about what is driving the demand into “off-prem” data centers.
Cloud is the fastest growing data center segment* According to Gartner, Cloud computing is growing 16.5% annually and its not slowing down. Why? Cost. It’s far less expensive to move data to a reliable third party than manage on-site data centers, staff, technology. But, we also know there’s a trade-off and in many cases, public cloud may not the right choice for all applications.
What else? IOT, mobility and content distribution networks are driving high demand to regional and local edge data centers and more of that is coming. By bringing the data closer to the edge, we solve some of the challenges that might exist with public cloud. Latency, for example. Anyone streaming service subscribers understands the frustration of latency when they see the buffering circle disrupting movie night. As AI technologies mature and gains prevalence with self-driving cars and robots, these applications will drive an enormous amount of data. Some of you may be familiar with Mark Cuban – a business man worth 3.4 billion USD – when asked what business he would have gotten into if he was 23 year old today – machine learning, AI.
All of this is good news for cloud and service providers so it sounds like we’ve all picked the right business to be in
Does this feel too far in the future? It’s here today. (click)

But demand drivers aren’t limited to robot cops in Dubai. Advanced analytics, machine learning is happening across more and more industries. Real-time information from sensors is used to make operational decisions. As cybersecurity improves, we can make thoughtful decisions to automate some of those operational decisions – thus more industrial devices are coming online at the edge of the network.
It is very gratifying for me to connect with my segment colleagues in industries like Oil & Gas, Food and Bev, Water / Wastewater and hear about the amazing IoT solutions that they are bringing to their clients every day. Of course, it becomes even more gratifying because these solutions are driving opportunity for my clients and for our Cloud & Service Provider business as well. Here we see a simplified diagram of the new computing eco system and those large cloud data centers which have traditionally been the workhorse for applications.
But you are seeing applications migrating closer to the user and the data. Whether these applications are mirrored or dependent on each other, it becomes a complicated architecture – including cloud, as well as regional data centers – often, these are colocation facilities.
I would reference specifically some of the great work that our Minerals, Mining, and Metals team has done with one of their largest clients. Across mines, railways, and ports, this company is generating 2.4 terrabytes of a data a minute and expect to be able to save U$200 million a year over the next three years in maintenance costs by using predictive analytics and "enhanced" maintenance planning systems. Much of this is supported by cloud and colocation data centers as well as the operational data they may be managing on-prem. You are critical to bringing this new digital world to life.
It means that there is opportunity and risk. Your clients are becoming smarter and more educated every day. It is not enough any more just to have Power, cooling, and networking in the right location. Your clients are more familiar with the various technologies available to them and are looking for partners who are innovating in order to lower cost and to get their IT equipment and applications up and running quickly. For you to generate more revenue from each of your clients, you need greater visibility in order to wrap more services around your existing clients.
We are in the technology business. The days of sending maintenance folks out with clipboards to record measurements is long since gone. The challenge is to embed the right level of technology into your infrastructure to enable your team.
With all the growth, means high demand and high competition. You need to deliver high performance data centers, in the right locations, manage capex and find efficiencies to keep opex down, ensuring strong margins. Meanwhile you have customers with varying and changing demands.
A few weeks ago I was meeting with a customer, a large, global colocation player. This client is going to double the size of their existing portfolio of data centers over the next 3 to 4 years. They cannot afford to double the size of their operational expense to support it. Technology and digital services are the key to enabling this type of operational efficiency.
Your specific needs may be unique but the overall challenge is consistent across the Industry
So, what can we do? Let’s spend a few minutes to talk about the connected data center. It uses data from smart devices, to make smart decisions, fully connected, solving issues before they become problems. Best of all – its here today.
We deploy EcoStruxure in a tailored instance for each of 4 key vertical end markets -- Building, Data Center, Industry, and Infrastructure -- where we have decades of deep domain expertise and applied experience. For Cloud and Service Providers we’re drawing upon three of these domains:
Power – efficient medium voltage to low voltage equipment to power the biggest facilities.
IT – flexible, reliable infrastructure to bring capacity up quickly
Buildings – smart, sustainable systems all integrated to increase efficiencies, speed to market and to reduce risk
By bringing together the deep domains of expertise we have in Building, IT and Power, we can deliver enhanced value around safety, reliability, efficiency, sustainability and connectivity for our customers. We have leveraged advancements in IoT, mobility, sensing, cloud, analytics, and cybersecurity technologies to deliver Innovation At Every Level from Connected Products to Edge Control to Applications, Analytics and Services.
This all comes together as EcoStruxure for Data Centers.
When we can successfully partner with our clients to collaborate on the design, we can help them to design a data center that is optimized for the ongoing management and maintenance of the facility. It begins with connected offers. If you are not sensing and monitoring in the right places, you do not have the proper foundation and even the most robust systems will fail. From our highest functionality meters to simple and cost effective sensing devices, we can help lay out a reference architecture specific to your needs. The next step up is Edge control, whether in the white space, grey space or mechanical domain, (ideally across all 3) – our software offers provide real time monitoring and control capability. And of course, over the long term, we can help our clients drive operational efficiency by leveraging big data analytics and our lifecycle services to drive reliability and efficiency
MARK: Walk through a quick example for each layer -- if you’re a medium size colocation facilities looking to build quickly, we may develop a solution that includes…..
What does all of this mean – by deploying EcoStruxure you can gain a competitive advantage – build faster, manage costs to maximize profits and mitigate risk to ensure customer satisfaction.
But rather than spend time on hypotheticals, I’d like to spend some time sharing some actual customer implementations.
Earlier we talked about the importance of being in the right place at the right time. That is especially true in the competitive colocation market. If you’ve got reliable, efficient data center capacity in an area where there’s great demand, chances are you’ll get your share of business. I’d like to introduce you to Interxion, a colocation provider with 45 locations across Europe. France is Europe’s third largest economy and more than 75% of the country’s IT spending resides in or around Paris, thus Interxion has seven data centers in Paris due to the market and business conditions. Their data centers are also gateways to emerging markets so to meet new demand, Interxion decided to build a new data center in Marseille, on the southern coast of France. In this short video we will show you how we turned an old warehouse in Marseille into a state-of-the-art data center he is today.
Exceeded 2020 water reduction goals
Data is essential for Active Energy Management. First you need to figure out what energy and sustainability data you have and what you need. Sharing this data across departments and across the organization enables companies to find new opportunities. For example, our client AEG monitors energy, water and waste in our global platform Resource Advisor and has saved $3M, diverted waste and met their water reduction goals.
