Basic Concepts for an Integrated Steel Process Control SystemSchneider Electric
For the past few years, the market was preoccupied with discussions about terminology such as: distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and the “newcomers” hybrid control systems (HCS) and programmable automation controllers (PAC), and how each should be applied to steel and metals processing applications. Steel manufacturing is an industry that requires specific approaches for control systems; it mixes process, machines, discrete control, several motors, high-availability systems and involves massive amounts of variables and architectures that requires flexible topologies. Better understand these technologies, myths and facts, and learn the real needs and trends for control systems in steel and metals industries, regardless of labels and acronyms. [Webinar Slides] Advanced distribution management system integration of renew...Schneider Electric
Slide deck of the webinar presented by John Dirkman on Oct. 23, 2013.
The presence of highly variable renewables and distributed energy resources is rapidly increasing within distribution systems, resulting in the potential for problems like reverse power flow, impact on voltage profile, and more complex protection schemes.
During this webinar, John Dirkman, Senior Director of Smart Grid Strategy & Development at Schneider Electric, explored how an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), combined with an accurate weather forecasting system, can be used to resolve problems and increase benefits of both renewables and distributed energy resources.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Learn how renewables and distributed energy resources can impact an electric distribution system.
- Discover ways to manage and optimize renewables and distributed energy resources using ADMS.
- Integration of an accurate weather forecasting system with ADMS maximizes benefits from renewables.
- Distributed energy resources and demand response are components of microgrids, also managed by ADMS.
Electric utilities are preparing for the multitude of challenges facing the industry — limited generation to supply increasing energy demand, growing regulatory and customer pressure for increased reliability and reduced carbon emissions, adoption of distributed renewable generation and energy storage, and the inevitability of both an aging workforce and infrastructure.
In a rather short period of time, these challenges have converged, and in doing so, have exposed the need for a comprehensive distribution network monitoring, analysis, and control system.
Utilities that are proactive — building business cases and deploying scalable solutions now — will be best prepared to meet the challenges of today and the future. To assist the industry in achieving their strategic Smart Grid goals, Schneider Electric proudly offers its Advanced Distribution Management
System (ADMS).

Field work is an aspect of operations and asset management that presents many challenges to utilities. Managers need efficient ways to instruct crews on the location and details of work. Field crews need intuitive and focused software tools that enable them to find and accomplish their work. But paper-based processes are still used for field work at our utility and many others. Why? Because typical mobile solutions are difficult to deploy, license, secure, integrate with enterprise systems, and maintain over time. Our resources are already stretched thin, so adding or expanding a complex solution is just not feasible.
This presentation proposes the mobile work management solution of our dreams. Imagine a solution that is simple to implement and addresses the variety of field work that our organization needs to accomplish. Our field personnel could deploy lightweight apps to their mobile devices in just minutes, log in seamlessly with their existing corporate credentials, and access their work instantly. They could work without internet connectivity, and their updates would be automatically synchronized to the enterprise when connectivity is re-established.
This dream mobile solution would enable the secure, unimpeded flow of digital information between the office and the field, accelerating our essential business workflows. We could quickly add as many users as needed to accomplish the task of the day. The solution would recognize that all field work has a location, and leverage our existing facility GIS to define work locations. Data captured in the field would include the information most relevant to our business, including work status and results, GPS breadcrumb trails, redline sketches of situations, and proposed edits to asset data.
We believe that the mobile work management solution of our dreams is within reach with today’s technology, and that it will truly lower our cost of doing business.

Row-based data center cooling is normally regarded as
a “cold air supply” architecture that uses row-based
coolers. However, row-based cooling is actually a “hot
air capture” architecture that neutralizes hot air from IT
equipment before it has a chance to mix with the
surrounding air in the room. This paper discusses
common misconceptions aboutrow-based cooling,
explains how row-based cooling removes hot air, and
describes key design attributes that maximize the
effectiveness of this approach.

The Metals, Minerals & Mining industry has a resource
problem — operators that are untrained and subject to
a high rate of employee attrition; and plants that operate
at less than optimized conditions. To reverse the trend,
the industry must promote and accelerate mining
operations excellence. It must be done quickly, with
little room for uncertainty.
Do IT administrators violate arc flash requirements
when they turn off or reset a branch circuit breaker?
What about swapping out a rack power strip? Most
data center operators are familiar with fire safety and
shock hazard protection, but are less familiar with arc
flash safety. Three IT trends have increased the
severity of a potential arc flash in the IT space; higher
data center capacities, higher rack densities, and
higher efficiency designs.
This paper discusses these three trends in the context
of arc flash safety within the IT space. Arc flash is
explained, potential areas of concern in the IT space
are identified, and compliance with associated regulations
is discussed.

Riel Substation is Manitoba Hydro’s newest DC Converter Station as well as a major 230/500kV transmission station. Riel covers approximately 40 hectares making it physically one of the largest
substations in North America. The project modifies the existing 500kV international transmission line running from Winnipeg, CA to Minnesota.
This paper presents the analysis of the technical issues encountered during project execution such as engineering design, multivendor integration, GOOSE implementation, network infrastructure and cyber security. It covers also the organizational issues such as customer involvement and standardization, among others, lessons learned and recommendations for future implementations.
This is one of the first complete protection and control automation solution using redundant IEC61850. The technology being implemented within Riel Station is not only one of the largest Digital Control Systems on the continent, but is one of the premier systems in the world today.
As a partner of the Riel initiative, Schneider Electric has completed the engineering, design and manufacturing of protection and control panels for the entire substation using state of the art technologies including but not limited to full redundant system, NERC CIP cyber security compliance, multivendor interoperability and reliability as a top priority with 6 independent fiber optic networks, redundant protections, HMI and networks.
The implemented design permits a cost effective solution using the Ethernet Redundant Networks to communicate with others devices and non-hardwire traditional solution. The protection scheme solution is based on IEC61850, providing the protection functions and logics inside the different relays to
share and capture information required protecting the electrical network and facilitating the monitoring from HMI. By the time this paper will be presented at DTECH 2015, the 230 kV portion of the project will have been commissioned and energized.

More Electric:
Our world is becoming More Electric. Almost everything we interact with today is either already electric or becoming electric. Think about it. From the time you start your day in the morning to the time you finish your day – your home, your car, your work, your devices, your entertainment – almost everything is electric. Imagine the energy needed to power this. Electricity consumption will increase by 80% in next 25 years
More Connected: Our lives are also becoming more connected. The Internet has already transformed the way we live, work and play. Now the Connected Things is going to take this to a brand new level. 50 billion things connected in the next 5 years.
More Distributed: With such a widespread electrification and connectivity, energy models need rethinking as well. Which is why the generation of power needs to be closer to users. Distributed Energy is rapidly evolving globally. This is positive energy – renewable. In 2014 , Renewables overtook fossil fuels in investment value, with $295bn invested in renewables compared to $289bn invested in fossil fuels. And it is getting cheaper to do this.
More Efficient: When our world is more electric, more connected and more distributed, new opportunities emerge and allows us to tap into even more efficiency – in industrial processes, in the energy value chain, in buildings, in transportation, in the global supply chain and even in the comfort and peace-of-mind of our homes.

Within healthcare facilities, high availability of systems is a key influencer of revenue and patient safety and satisfaction. Three important critical success factors need to be addressed in order to achieve safety and availability goals. These include exceeding the facility’s level of regulatory compliance, a linking of business benefits to the maintenance of a safe and an “always on” power and ventilation environment, and a sensible approach to technology upgrades that includes new strategies for “selling” technological improvements to executives. This reference guide offers recommendations for identifying and addressing each of these issues.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

The challenge
The statutory requirements for water companies are growing. These
requirements are the same for everyone - regardless of size – which
creates some challenges, especially for the smaller, privately owned water
companies like Kværndrup Waterworks on the Danish island of Funen.
With limited resources, it can be difficult to maintain financial viability
when the plant’s system management must be upgraded to meet the
requirements of a modern, optimized operation.
Kværndrup Waterworks has five wells and four pumps. Its SCADA system
was not up to date, so there was a clear need for an upgrade to both
the hardware and software, according to electrical engineer Morten C.
Jorgensen of Water Center South, the company helping Kværndrup
Waterworks manage their upgrade.
Modicon M580: The affordable solution
Until recently, the SCADA system was powered by Schneider Electric’s
Premium PLC, with its PL7 software. This has now been replaced by the
new Modicon M580 ePAC and Unity Pro 8.0 software in a project that is
very affordable for Kværndrup Waterworks.
”It is always crucial to find the right balance between price and
performance of the hardware and software that control the pumps and
collect data about water quality. We found the balance with M580 and
Unity Pro 8.0,” explains Jorgensen.
The Modicon M580 ePAC is ideal for simple upgrades
of existing installations. It offers lower installation costs
because its built-in support for Modicon Premium I/O
means you can easily migrate to M580 and reuse the
existing I/O platform, instead of replacing all the I/O
modules and installing new cables.

The benefits
One of the advantages of the Modicon M580 is its built-in support for
Modicon Premium I/O. The customer can easily migrate to the M580
ePAC and reuse the existing I/O platform, instead of incurring additional
expenses by replacing all I/O modules and installing new cables.
“We have also taken the opportunity to make a few optimizations, with a
focus on energy optimization. Now, the controller automatically lowers
the pressure at night, when there is less demand, saving the waterworks
energy and money,” says Jorgensen.
Schneider Electric’s innovative Modicon M580 is the world’s first PAC with
Ethernet built directly into its core. This makes it significantly easier to
integrate third-party equipment and achieve full transparency at all levels
of application. Jorgensen has no doubts about the benefits offered by this
technology.
“It looks really exciting,” he says. “We have a lot of sensors and measuring
equipment in our facilities, so it’s a major advantage that they can be
integrated deeper and with more transparency in management.” The
increased security offered by the M580 is also an important improvement
to the waterwork’s system.
The Kværndrup Waterworks upgrade was Morten C. Jorgensen’s first
project using the Modicon M580 ePAC, but it certainly won’t be his last. “The
unit has worked flawlessly at Kværndrup Waterworks, and we have already
ordered three more for other major upgrading projects we are overseeing.”
