Georgetown Municipal Water and Sewer Service, USGS, and planning, emergency management and environmental professionals from Fayette and Scott County, under the guidance of the Kentucky Division of Water, are in the process of a 5-year update to the Royal Spring Wellhead Protection Plan. Royal Spring has been the primary source for drinking water for the City of Georgetown since its founding, and currently provides drinking water to approximately 30,000 residents. Royal Spring is fed by an underground aquifer that extends to the northern edge of downtown Lexington. The protection of this water source from surface contamination and hazardous spills has and continues to be a top priority. A wellhead protection plan has been in place since 2003. The initial plan estab- lished a Wellhead Protection Committee that reviews all new major development that occurs in the Royal Spring Aquifer Recharge Area in Fayette and Scott Counties and recommends Best Management Practices to be applied to protect water quality in the recharge area. Every five years updates to the Wellhead Protection Plan are required to address new or changing conditions. The major new policy addition to the current document is the inclusion of a Drought Management/Spring Contamination Plan. Once the draft update is complete, it will be taken to the Planning Commissions in Lexington/Fayette County and Georgetown/Scott County for public comment and ap- proval.  This week (Oct. 13-17), Whitley is at- tending the URISA Leadership Academy in Louisville, a five-day training session to de- velop GIS leadership skills. Topics include management techniques, strategic planning, funding ideas, and problem-solving.  The map to the right, produced by Ryan, was included in the grant proposal for funding the first leg of the Legacy Trail extension.
Construction has started on the new County road from U.S. 227 at Great Crossings Park to the new bypass near Western Elementary School. The future County Road Department facility will be located on this new road.
