2. About NTA NET
• On behalf of UGC, the National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted for
determining the eligibility of Indian nationals ‘only for Assistant
Professor’ or ‘for Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor
both’ in Indian Universities and Colleges
• Till recently, the CBSE conducted the UGC-NET in 84 subjects at 91
selected cities spread across the country.
• From Dec 2018 onwards, the UGC-NET will be conducted by the National
Testing Agency (NTA).
• The award of ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Assistant
Professor both’ or ‘Eligibility for Assistant Professor only’ depends on the
performance of the candidate in both the papers of UGC-NET in
aggregate. However, the candidates qualifying for ‘Assistant Professor
only’ are not to be considered for award of JRF. Additionally, candidates
who qualify the Test for eligibility for Assistant Professor are governed by
the rules and regulations for recruitment of Assistant Professor of the
concerned universities/colleges/state governments, as the case may be.

3. Eligibility
• Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in
Master s Degree OR equivalent examination from universities/institutions
recognised by UGC (on the website:
https://www.ugc.ac.in/oldpdf/consolidated%20list%20of%20All%20universit
ies.pdf) in Humanities (including languages) and Social Science, Computer
Science & Applications, Electronic Science etc. are eligible for this Test.
• The Other Backward Classes(OBC) belonging to non-creamy layer/Scheduled
Caste(SC)/Scheduled Tribe(ST)/ persons with disability(PwD) category
candidates who have secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in
Master s degree or equivalent examination are eligible for this Test.
• Candidates who are pursuing their Master's degree or equivalent course or
candidates who have appeared for their qualifying Master s degree (final
year) examination and whose result is still awaited or candidates whose
qualifying examinations have been delayed may also apply for this test.

4. Eligibility
• However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be
considered eligible for award of Junior Research Fellowship/eligibility for
Assistant Professor only after they have passed their Master's Degree OR
equivalent examination with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of OBC
falling in Non-Creamy layer/SC/ST/PwD (persons with disability)) category
candidates. Such candidates must complete their Masters degree or
equivalent examination within two years from the date of NET result with
required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as
disqualified.
• Candidates belonging to third gender in other words transgender would be
eligible to draw the same relaxation in fee, age and qualifying criteria for NET
(i.e. Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor) as are available to
SC/ST/PwD categories. The subject wise cut-offs for this category should be
the lowest among those for SC/ST/PwD/OBC NCL categories in the
corresponding subject.

5. Eligibility
• The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master s level examination had been
completed by 19th September 1991 (irrespective of date of declaration of
result) shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e. from
55% to 50%) for appearing in NET.
• Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their post graduation only.
The candidates, whose post graduation subject is not covered in the list of
subjects, may appear in a related subject.
• Candidates having post-graduate diploma/certificate awarded by Indian
University/ Institute or foreign degree/diploma/certificate awarded by the
foreign University/institute should in their own interest, ascertain the
equivalence of their diploma/degree/certificate with Master s degree of
recognized Indian universities from Association of Indian Universities (AIU),

6. Exam Centre
• On behalf of UGC, the National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted for

Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant
Professor Both in Indian Universities and Colleges.

will be conducted by the NTA.

Assistant Professor only depends on the performance of the candidate in
both the papers of NET in aggregate. However, the candidates qualifying
exclusively for Assistant Professor are not to be considered for award of JRF.
Candidates who qualify the Test for eligibility for Assistant Professor are
governed by the rules and regulations for recruitment of Assistant Professor
of the concerned universities/colleges/state governments, as the case may
be.

7. Pattern
• The Examination shall only be conducted as Computer Based Test (CBT).
Wherever Online Examination has been used elsewhere in this booklet,
NTA’s UGC-NET application form, it means CBT only.
• The Test will consist of two papers. Both the papers will consist of only
objective type questions and will be attempted with a break of 30
minutes between them.

aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily
be designed to test reasoning ability,
comprehension, divergent thinking and
general awareness of the candidate

This will be based on the subject selected by
the candidate. All the questions of Paper–II will
be compulsory.

8. About Paper I
• UGC NET Paper I will cover Teaching/ Research aptitude section.
• Paper I will test the Teaching/Research aptitude of the aspirant.
• UGC NET Paper I Examination will be consisting of 50 objective type
multiple choice questions.
• Each question is worth 2 marks and the maximum marks for the exam is
100.
• Minimum qualifying marks in UGC NET Paper I is 40/100 (40%) for
General category.
• The Paper will be divided into 10 sections, with 5 questions based on
each section.

• Teaching Aptitude: nature, objectives, characteristics and basic
requirements; Learner’s characteristics; factors affecting teaching;
Methods of teaching; Teaching aids; Evaluation systems
• Research Aptitude: Research meaning, characteristics and types; steps of
research; methods of research; research ethics; paper, article, workshop,
seminar, conference and symposium; thesis writing its characteristics
and format
• Reading Comprehension
• Communication: nature, characteristics, types, barriers and effective
classroom communication
• Reasoning (including mathematical): Number series, letter series, codes,
relationships, classification

10. Paper I Syllabus
• Logical Reasoning: Understanding the structure of arguments; evaluating
and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning; verbal analogies,
word analogy, applied analogy; verbal classification; reasoning logical
diagrams; analytical reasoning
• Data Interpretation: Sources, acquisition and interpretation of data;
quantitative and qualitative data; graphical representation and mapping
of data
• Information and Communication Technology: ICT meaning, advantages,
disadvantages and uses; General abbreviations and terminology; Basics
of internet and emailing

11. Paper I Syllabus
• People and Environment:
• People and environment interaction; sources of pollution; pollutants and
their impact on human life, exploitation of natural and energy resources,
natural hazards and mitigation
• Higher Education System:
• Governance, Polity and Administration; Structure of the institutions for
higher learning and research in India; formal and distance education;
professional/technical and general education; value education;
governance, polity and administration; concept, institutions and their
interactions.

12. Some Tips to Crack Paper I
• Understand the paper pattern thoroughly.
• Paper I is common for all students, so the competition will be high.
• Note down the syllabus of UGC NET Exam Paper I.
• Make a rough plan to cover up all the chapters (All the chapters should
be covered).
• Follow a methodical pattern of studying for maximum benefits.
• Prepare a study schedule including as many varied topics as you can and
study accordingly.
• Study basic concepts in mass communication for the communication
topic.

13. Some Tips to Crack Paper I
• Study each topic. Atleast 5 questions will definitely be asked from every
topic.
• Its important to study Teaching and Research part in depth.
• Revise basic mathematics concepts from class 10th, focusing mainly on
understanding sets/ patterns and improve approximation techniques.
• Data Interpretation is generally based on statistics and should be studied
from class 10th to prepare well.
• Read news articles and try summarizing it in a few points to practice for
reading comprehension.
• People and Environment section should be prepared from Class 10th
books.

14. Some Tips to Crack Paper I
• Information and Communication Technology and Higher Education
System should be given sufficient time as both topics are material-heavy.
• Prepare Information and Communication Technology and Higher
Education System from books specified for UGC NET.
• Use flash cards and charts for studying Information and Communication
Technology topic. Definitions, abbreviations and terminology are very
important for Information and Communication Technology section.
• Study for Higher Education System Governance, Polity and
Administration topic using flowcharts
• Attempt previous 10-15 years question paper completely. This will help
you the most. It will help you identify flavour of the questions that were
asked typically.

15. Some Tips to Crack Paper I
• Solve Mock test Papers for UGC NET. It is the most important thing to do
for UGC NET Paper I exam preparation.
• Analysis the attempted sample/mock test soon after its completion to
identify and improve your weak areas.
• Practice as much as you can. Practice will help you to attain a clear
picture of the concepts involved.
• You must attempt all the questions as there is no negative marking
system in CBSE UGC NET Exam paper I.
• Prepare notes and highlight important points and their sub-points,
logics, formulae, short tricks and short description of topics.
• Don’t lose your confidence. Be confident that you can clear the Exams.
