• Articles on health and diet, fashion tips, and reader stories.
• Large serif title at the top of the front page of the magazines.
• Large mid shot-longshot of a celebrity/model wearing a stylish dress.
Image takes up the whole page. Used to show the whole outfit. The models
are usually aged 20-35 which I would say is the target audience for these
types of fashion magazines.
• Subtitles down the two sides of the page giving a brief insight into what the
magazine covers in the issue.
• Colour scheme usually consists of 3-4 bright colours.
• Quotes and exclusive interviews used as the main selling point of the
magazine
• The models on the front cover are all looking straight at the camera.
This is done to capture peoples attention when they are on the stand
in the shop as it has the effect of the models looking at you.
• The models wear a lot of makeup to make them look more glamorous
which appeals to the audience as they want to look like the models.
• As well as makeup, editing would have been used to get rid of the
models imperfections.
• High key lighting is used on the cover to highlight the model’s look
and make them stand out.
The magazines are not as symmetrical as you would expect as the text is is filled into the blank
spaces of the image. Therefore, the text will usually be more biased to one side of the cover due to
the model posing and taking up more space on one side.
The main cover line is usually highlighted by being larger than other cover lines and being different
in colour and font.
There usually is a cover line related to the model/celebrity (if used).
Sans serif fonts usually related to an older target audience and serif is more modern and younger
targeted.
Straplines use specific text to stand out and promote the articles in the magazine so you can
instantly know whether or not the magazine/article interests you.
Magazines use different types of register depending on what the
magazines brand is about and the contents of the magazine.
Magazines that use a formal register have more serious articles and
usually have to do with politics for example. Magazines that use
informal register are more fun and for entertainment.
Pun and slang words are used for magazines with a target audience of
16-25.
• Stereotypically, pink and purple colours connote a female audience.
Therefore magazines that target females usually use these bright
colours. Whereas, male magazines will usually use darker colours and
blues and reds.
