This task will include:
• Front cover analysis
• Content page analysis
• Double spread article analysis
• Magazine research
• Company research – subsidiaries, demographics
• Comparison between 2 magazine front covers, content pages and double spread articles
• Codes and conventions
• Summary
I am going to analyze 2 Fitness Magazine Front Covers, 2 Content Pages and 2 Double
Spread Articles as part of research for my AS Media Task. This will give me an idea of how
my overall magazine design should look. This will as well give me knowledge about
magazines and how they are appealing and attractive to its customers. This will help me
understand what codes and conventions are used in successful design and what
convinces the customer to purchase this magazine.
I will then do my research into 2 magazine companies and I will research magazines they
publish, their subsidiaries and their demographics. This will help me understand other
magazines and it will give me an insight of how I should plan and design my own
magazine front cover, content page and double spread article. At the same time this will
provide me with a valuable insight into a business side of magazine publishing and how
such companies structured and in which way they operate and place their products.
Next I will do a comparison between 2 different magazine front covers, content pages
and double spread articles in order to see design differences and similarities. This part of
secondary research will give me an idea and inspiration of how the final design of my
magazine should look, what sort of colors, fonts etc. I will use to make my magazine
more appealing to the customers.
These steps will help me have more knowledge of magazine uses and designs. They will
also help me with the decision of how I want my final designs to look in order to attract
customers. They will give me a better knowledge of design codes and conventions such
as what colors, fonts etc. are suitable for magazine front covers, content pages and
double spread articles.

• A properly designed Front Cover encourages the potential buyer to purchase a magazine and to increase sale
figures.
• The focal image on the cover must be appropriate and the model has to make contact with the potential buyer.
• It is essential to use one main headline that will stand out so the size, colour and attitude of it needs to be
interesting and engaging to gain the readers attraction.
• Usually the focus point that attracts the eye of the buyer is the model or the main headline.
• The Front Cover should be divided into 3 sections – a big one with the main cover line, a smaller one with a few
cover lines and tiny ones with additional cover lines.
• Colours such as green and red should always be used on the cover as they are usually attractive on a magazine
front cover and it is essential to achieve contrast between the two colours.
• Use of black and white for the colour lines is essential if the background is light or dark as this will make the
magazine more appealing and it will make it stand out more.
• Bright colours used for focus cover lines make the magazine look more lively and approachable.
• Short and clearly understood cover lines are important so that the potential buyer can understand it quickly.
• The biggest cover line should appeal to the biggest section of desired target audience.
• The use of descriptive words increases curiosity.
• In most magazines the layout must be consistent in order to create a strong visual identity.
• The choice of typography is important in order to show the readers article hierarchy.
• The masthead and all magazine titles must all be the same because of branding and advertising consideration.
• The placement of the masthead or magazine title can be in front of the subject or behind it.
• Date of the publication together with the price must be included on the magazine to show the buyer how much it
is and to show them when the magazine was published.
• A barcode must be included but must not dominate over the design.
• The cover lines should be in bold font with an explanatory line below it which is usually written in different colour.
• Use flash words such as “New”, “More” and “Exclusive” because people are used to them and attracted by them.
• A great format is used when designing a cover in order to create an organised structure in order to make it easier
for the reader to navigate over the front cover and to be pleasing to the eye.

• Inside a magazine the double article spread consists of two pages next to each other.
• In regards to design, these two pages are considered as one unit.
• Magazines are smaller to other print publications therefore magazine double spreads can be viewed as normal
viewing distance.
• The most visible area is the outer part of the right page and it is more exposed to the readers eye than the rest of
the double spread article.
• The nest content of the article needs to be placed on the outside parts of the spread. In this place usually most
provoked images and words are placed to grab the attention of the reader.
• The most valuable areas of page spread are top left and top right parts.
• Bottom part of the spread in the corners near the gutter are less important. Designers usually place footnotes and
some credits in those parts of the spread.
• Most readers concentrate on the top part of the spread because the readers eye will stop when they scheme the
pages and therefore this is the most essential design convention and natural starting point.
• The image and the headline are most important eye stoppers as these are what make the article look more
attractive to the reader and the headlines are usually what grabs the readers attention because of font, colour and
size. Headlines are also eye catching as they give the reader an idea of what the article inside the magazine is
about.
• The layout of the text must follow natural way of reading the story and in regards to design everything needs to
flow from the meaningful top left and then continue to the bottom.
• The order of design should be followed by headline then into the intro copy and then the main copy.
• Big blocks of text should not be broken up. The flow of the text columns needs to be tidy and even to make it
easier for the reader to understand what the article itself is about.
• The design should be simplified by aligning the columns at the top and placing images above them to make it
more appealing, lively and creative for the reader.
• The left pages of the double spread article are usually for tutorial convent.

In this PowerPoint I have included research to give me knowledge on how I am going to design my magazine in
order to make it more appealing, creative and attractive to the potential buyers. I have included the analysis of 2
magazine front covers, comparisons of 2 front covers, analysis of 2 magazine content pages, comparisons of 2
content pages, analysis of 2 magazine double spread articles, comparisons of 2 double spread articles, front
cover codes and conventions, content page codes and conventions, double spread article codes and
conventions, the codes and conventions used to create a magazine, demographics and information about 2
magazine institutions.
All of this will give me the information I need to create and publish a successful fitness magazine. It will also
give me a fair idea of how I want my magazine to look and what sort of articles I am wanting to include inside
the magazine in order to encourage the potential buyers to purchase a new magazine each time they are
released. The comparisons of the front covers, content pages and double spread articles helped me understand
how the layout of the content page and double spread article should be. It helped me gain knowledge on fonts,
colours, sizes and images to use to make it look more lively, creative and attractive to the reader. I also know
what colours not to use or not to mix together as they will make the magazine look less appealing to the
readers. I will use bright colours in order to make the magazine look more attractive and also to make it look
bright and eye catching to the potential buyers. I will also use a large bright coloured font to make the front
cover more eye catching to the reader.
The information on this PowerPoint will give me the motivation and encouragement to design my Fitness
magazine to the best of my ability.

As media studies task

  • 1. Ross Richardson This task will include: • Front cover analysis • Content page analysis • Double spread article analysis • Magazine research • Company research – subsidiaries, demographics • Comparison between 2 magazine front covers, content pages and double spread articles • Codes and conventions • Summary
  • 2. I am going to analyze 2 Fitness Magazine Front Covers, 2 Content Pages and 2 Double Spread Articles as part of research for my AS Media Task. This will give me an idea of how my overall magazine design should look. This will as well give me knowledge about magazines and how they are appealing and attractive to its customers. This will help me understand what codes and conventions are used in successful design and what convinces the customer to purchase this magazine. I will then do my research into 2 magazine companies and I will research magazines they publish, their subsidiaries and their demographics. This will help me understand other magazines and it will give me an insight of how I should plan and design my own magazine front cover, content page and double spread article. At the same time this will provide me with a valuable insight into a business side of magazine publishing and how such companies structured and in which way they operate and place their products. Next I will do a comparison between 2 different magazine front covers, content pages and double spread articles in order to see design differences and similarities. This part of secondary research will give me an idea and inspiration of how the final design of my magazine should look, what sort of colors, fonts etc. I will use to make my magazine more appealing to the customers. These steps will help me have more knowledge of magazine uses and designs. They will also help me with the decision of how I want my final designs to look in order to attract customers. They will give me a better knowledge of design codes and conventions such as what colors, fonts etc. are suitable for magazine front covers, content pages and double spread articles.

  • 4. Mise-en-Scene: there are not really any props on this magazine cover but we can see Mark Wahlberg with his hands in his pocket. This may show the readers that this is a relaxed magazine. Mode of Address: the target audience is related to the visual modes of address such as Mark Wahlberg standing with his hands in his pocket. You can also see his muscles with his t-shirt on and this could be to encourage people to get muscles like Mark Wahlberg. This makes it an enjoyable for people interested in staying fit and getting more muscle. Colour: the colour scheme of 'Men's Health' is white as you can see the whole background is white but the masthead and the sub headings are all different colours. There are many different colours on this magazine cover which may attract more readers. Typography: as you can see the fonts contrast. The masthead 'Men's Health' is in large writing. The masthead is a san-serif font. The masthead on the front cover of the magazine may catch peoples eyes as the words are big and red. The colour red craves attention so this may attract readers. The sub headings of the magazine are smaller because they are not as important as the masthead of the magazine. The font on this 'Mens Health' magazine falls into the category san- serif. Camera Work: the main image is Mark Wahlberg standing with his hands in his pockets. This may be to show the readers that the magazine is nice and relaxed. Mark Wahlberg is wearing a black t-shirt and a pair or dark jeans. This picture may be to encourage people to lose weight the same way celebrities lose weight and gain muscle. Language: the language on the front cover is interesting and it is relevant to men who are wanting to stay fit and get more muscle. The language on the front cover of the magazine gives the reader an insight of what is inside. Layout: the layout of the magazine 'Men's Health' looks quite organised and it looks neat. The masthead is a san-serif font and it is big and red. The masthead is below the banner at the top of the cover page. The sub headings are around the side and in the middle there is a picture of Mark Wahlberg.
  • 5. Mise-en-Scene: there aren't really any props in this magazine. The picture of Mark Wahlberg standing with hands in his pockets and smiling may tell the readers that the Men's Fitness magazine is relaxing and enjoyable to help readers lose weight, gain muscle and stay fit. Mode of Address: the target audience is related to the visual modes of address as the picture of Mark Wahlberg. You can see his muscles even though he is wearing a t- shirt and this will show people that the magazine is for people who enjoy fitness or want to be fit and healthy like many celebrities all over the world. Camera Work: the main image on this 'Men's Health' magazine cover is Mark Wahlberg standing with his hands in his pocket and he is smiling. This may show the readers that this magazine is relaxing and enjoyable or Mark Wahlberg smiling may tell the readers that he is happy staying fit and healthy by reading 'Men's Fitness'. The sub headings around the sides of the magazine are to grab the readers attention and make them interested on what is inside the magazine. Language: the language on the front cover is interesting and the language is relevant to men who want to lose weight, stay fit or gain more muscle. I think the sub headings will attract readers because the sub headings show that there are tips on losing weight and getting muscle. Colour: the colour scheme of ‘MEN'S HEALTH’ is mostly white and black as you can see the background is pure white but the subheadings are black and red. The masthead of this magazine cover is in a big san-serif font and it is red which makes the magazine look good.
  • 6. • A properly designed Front Cover encourages the potential buyer to purchase a magazine and to increase sale figures. • The focal image on the cover must be appropriate and the model has to make contact with the potential buyer. • It is essential to use one main headline that will stand out so the size, colour and attitude of it needs to be interesting and engaging to gain the readers attraction. • Usually the focus point that attracts the eye of the buyer is the model or the main headline. • The Front Cover should be divided into 3 sections – a big one with the main cover line, a smaller one with a few cover lines and tiny ones with additional cover lines. • Colours such as green and red should always be used on the cover as they are usually attractive on a magazine front cover and it is essential to achieve contrast between the two colours. • Use of black and white for the colour lines is essential if the background is light or dark as this will make the magazine more appealing and it will make it stand out more. • Date of the publication together with the price must be included on the magazine to show the buyer how much it is and to show them when the magazine was published. • A barcode must be included but must not dominate over the design. • The cover lines should be in bold font with an explanatory line below it which is usually written in different colour. • Use flash words such as “New”, “More” and “Exclusive” because people are used to them and attracted by them. • A great format is used when designing a cover in order to create an organised structure in order to make it easier for the reader to navigate over the front cover and to be pleasing to the eye.
  • 7. Mise-en-Scene: the background of this content page is white but there is some red and black in it. One of the headings are black and the rest of the headings are red. • 28. In this PowerPoint I have included research to give me knowledge on how I am going to design my magazine in order to make it more appealing, creative and attractive to the potential buyers. I have included the analysis of 2 magazine front covers, comparisons of 2 front covers, analysis of 2 magazine content pages, comparisons of 2 content pages, analysis of 2 magazine double spread articles, comparisons of 2 double spread articles, front cover codes and conventions, content page codes and conventions, double spread article codes and conventions, the codes and conventions used to create a magazine, demographics and information about 2 magazine institutions. All of this will give me the information I need to create and publish a successful fitness magazine. It will also give me a fair idea of how I want my magazine to look and what sort of articles I am wanting to include inside the magazine in order to encourage the potential buyers to purchase a new magazine each time they are released. The comparisons of the front covers, content pages and double spread articles helped me understand how the layout of the content page and double spread article should be. It helped me gain knowledge on fonts, colours, sizes and images to use to make it look more lively, creative and attractive to the reader. I also know what colours not to use or not to mix together as they will make the magazine look less appealing to the readers. I will use bright colours in order to make the magazine look more attractive and also to make it look bright and eye catching to the potential buyers. I will also use a large bright coloured font to make the front cover more eye catching to the reader. The information on this PowerPoint will give me the motivation and encouragement to design my Fitness magazine to the best of my ability.
