1) Social media like Twitter has grown rapidly in Japan, with Japanese now being the second most used language on Twitter.
2) Twitter and live streaming services like Ustream are being used widely at academic conferences in Japan, allowing remote participation.
3) While domestic social networks in Japan like Mixi are popular, they focus on existing relationships rather than finding new contacts, and don't allow open registration, making international collaboration difficult. However, Mixi and a potential expansion of Facebook in Japan may change this.
4) The presenter recommends two new Japanese services - Lang-8 for language learning across borders, and Researchmap for academic social networking - to facilitate international connections.

It describes the rise of social media platforms like Twitter and Ustream, which are increasingly being used as communication tools. It also discusses how social networking services in Japan are evolving to the next stage, with more emphasis on networking and sharing information. Examples of new services that facilitate research networking through mapping connections between researchers are presented.
All I need to know about Twitter in Education I learned in KindergartenWolfgang Reinhardt
The document discusses principles for using Twitter in education based on lessons from kindergarten. It summarizes several case studies where Twitter has been successfully integrated into language learning, motivating classroom discussions, and facilitating process-oriented learning. Some key principles discussed include sharing information freely but giving credit, avoiding personal attacks or private conversations in public tweets, and apologizing if a tweet unintentionally offends or hurts someone. Hashtags are also discussed as a way to organize tweets by topic. Overall, the document argues that applying kindergarten lessons like sharing, fairness, and responsibility can help Twitter be used productively for educational purposes.
The document discusses social media in Japan, including that blogs have 17 million users with 3 million active, Mixi is the largest social networking site with 15 million users, Wikipedia is one of the top five languages, and NicoNicoDouga has 10 million video sharing users. Trends in social media content include daily life, culture, communication, and politics. Participants are mostly anonymous with some celebrities and famous bloggers. Future directions may include more integration with mobile phones, lifelogging, agents, and collaboration to shape bottom-up culture. The document also shows a social network graph of creators for Hatsune Miku related videos.
The document is a request for comments on web archiving of Japanese company websites (shashi). It discusses the crisis of information loss as companies go bankrupt and vanish from the internet. It proposes collecting company URLs, collaborating with archiving organizations, and applying for a grant from the Library Advancement Foundation to fund the archiving efforts. It suggests establishing a "Japan-America Network for Japanese Shashi Development" to apply for the grant and further the work of preserving Japanese company websites and histories.
This document discusses news and social media platforms. It provides details about upcoming deadlines for a video story, print story, and website that are due in April and May. It also lists suggested topics for a class presentation on the relationship between a digital platform and news, including Snapchat, virtual reality, drones, and various social media sites. The document then discusses how different social media platforms are used for news and their audience demographics, including statistics on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, and LinkedIn users that get news from each site.
1. The document discusses various topics relating to news and social media platforms, including an upcoming student presentation that must cover a digital platform, its strengths/weaknesses, and examples of its use for news.
2. It provides statistics on news consumption across different social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Platforms vary in their total user bases and the portion that access news on each site.
3. Challenges facing Twitter are discussed, like slower user growth compared to Facebook. Reasons proposed for Twitter's troubles include its chronological newsfeed format and 140-character limit.
How could a product or service is reasonably evaluated by anyone in the shortest time? A million dollar
question but it is having a simple answer: Sentiment analysis. Sentiment analysis is consumers review on
products and services which helps both the producers and consumers (stakeholders) to take effective and
efficient decision within a shortest period of time. Producers can have better knowledge of their products
and services through the sentiment analysis (ex. positive and negative comments or consumers likes and
dislikes) which will help them to know their products status (ex. product limitations or market status).
Consumers can have better knowledge of their interested products and services through the sentiment
analysis (ex. positive and negative comments or consumers likes and dislikes) which will help them to know
their deserving products status (ex. product limitations or market status). For more specification of the
sentiment values, fuzzy logic could be introduced. Therefore, sentiment analysis with the help of fuzzy logic
(deals with reasoning and gives closer views to the exact sentiment values) will help the producers or
consumers or any interested person for taking the effective decision according to their product or service
interest.

This document summarizes a research paper on sentiment analysis using fuzzy logic. It discusses how sentiment analysis of consumer reviews can help both producers and consumers make effective decisions by understanding positive and negative feedback. It proposes using fuzzy logic to provide closer views of sentiment values. Key aspects covered include using the SentiWordNet lexical resource and analyzing tweets on Twitter to classify sentiments as positive, negative or neutral. The methodology searches for tweets on a topic, translates them to English, tags parts of speech, and analyzes sentiment values using SentiWordNet with fuzzy logic to help stakeholders make informed decisions.
This document summarizes a research paper on sentiment analysis using fuzzy logic. It discusses how sentiment analysis of consumer reviews can help both producers and consumers make effective decisions by understanding opinions on products and services. It also describes how fuzzy logic can be used to analyze sentiment values more precisely. The document outlines different approaches to sentiment analysis, including classifying reviews as positive or negative and determining the degree of sentiment. Twitter is presented as a source of consumer opinions that can be analyzed for sentiment using techniques like identifying emoticons, hashtags and targets.
This document provides a literature review and background information on technologies used by different communication professionals. It discusses how journalists, public relations professionals, and media production practitioners each rely on different technologies to varying degrees. Journalists primarily use technologies like Microsoft Office and social media to research, write, and distribute news stories. Public relations professionals heavily utilize social media as a way to inform and influence audiences on behalf of organizations. Media production practitioners rely on equipment like cameras, lighting, and audio tools to create and capture content. The document also examines the concept of uses and gratifications theory, which suggests people use media to fulfill various needs and that media is just one influence among many.

Introduction
Hi everyone. It’s a great pleasure for me to give you a short report
from Japan. I hope my speech is helpful for all of you.
Rise of Social Media in Japan
Now in Japan, new web services which called social media like
Twitter are rapidly spreading among people.

Here is stats that show you the growth of Twitter in Japan. How
many of you have your own account of Twitter? Please, raise your hand.
Thank you. Last year, at this conference, Ms. Tokiko Yamamoto said this is
paper version of Twitter when she handed out comment paper. Then I was so
surprised because at that time Twitter was not popular in Japan, even
among librarians in Japan.
But, situation is changing.

Especially, from last summer, users of Twitter are rapidly increasing.
According to the recent survey (2010-02) by Semiocast, a French company
specialized in web analysis, Japanese is the second major language on
Twitter. Now 50% of all tweets are in English, and 14% of all tweets are in
Japanese, which is the second dominant language in Twitter. I don't touch

the reasons for this phenomenon because the time is limited. Anyway,
Twitter or same kind of services may become usual and default
communication style like email. Actually, some companies are shifting their
internal communication tool from email to Twitter. So, what's happening
after Twitter is widely spreading among people in Japan? What should
librarians know to bring Japanese information and expertise into global
information exchanges?
Twitter and USTREAM as Communication Tools between Japan and USA
First of all, use of Twitter is spreading among academic societies,
especially in annual meetings like this conference.

Last December, when I and other experts and researchers held the
1st symposium on web science at Tokyo University, more than 10K tweets
were posted during that all-day symposium. And more than 5K people
participated in the symposium through web broadcast using USTREAM.
USTREAM is another important tool for us.
Gradually, broadcasting is spreading not only among business scenes
but also in academic fields. Just 2 weeks ago, annual meeting of Information
Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), one of the biggest academic societies in
engineering science in Japan, was held. They streamed some sessions using
web broadcasting. It's not outstanding example. Even more humanity
societies like Association for Modern Japanese Literary Studies streamed
workshop in this month. As you may know, we can use Twitter on USTREAM,
these 2 tools have strong synergistic effects. Collaborative use of both Twitter
and USTREAM will become the standard function for conferences of
academic societies. Then, librarians in the field of Japan studies are required
to trace, collect and distribute that information at first. But how can we do
it?

There are some tools which visualize timeline of Twitter. For example,
“buzzter” is one of those indicators. “buzzter” shows you what the hot topic is
right now based on text analysis of public timeline.

A “hashtagsjp” is another choice. We can see what the hot hashtag is
in Japanese tweets.
At the end of the first topic, I want to add a little tip for finding
hashtag often used by Japanese. On the one hand, Asian language, especially,
CJK use double byte character, on the other hand, English is single byte.
Because of this difference between single and double, sometimes Japanese
users tend to use original hashtag even in English. For example, when
Japanese tweet about “ibrary, sometimes we use “#toshokan” as hashtag not
“#library” for avoiding confusion on timeline.

In Japan, mixi is the most popular among 3 major services. mixi has about
1.8M users (as of the end of year 2009). It is one fifth of Japanese internet
users. Unfortunately, global SNS like MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn are
not popular in Japan so far, although Japanese versions are available.
Moreover, there are typical differences between Japanese domestic SNSs and
global SNSs. For example, usually, you can’t join Japanese domestic SNS
without invitation by those who are already in the network. And most users
don’t show their profile like name properly. So, it is often difficult to find
friends in Japanese domestic SNSs. So, most of Japanese domestic SNSs
mirror the existing human relations. These SNSs are not always used for
developing new relationship with strangers. These differences are a kind of
barrier to communicate with each other between Japan and USA in a
scholarly way.
However, there are some signs of change. I have 2 points. One is the
change of the policy of mixi and the other is the challenge of Facebook to
break into Japanese market officially. At the beginning of this month, mixi
changed their policy. They turned from invitation to free registration. It will
make levels of entry lower. And it is said that Facebook is going to establish
Facebook Japan in these few months. Already Facebook hired the Japanese
manager for establishing domestic company in Japan. It is not clear that
Facebook will succeed in Japan as in other countries, but their start of actual
service will affect the policy of domestic SNS providers and custom among
their users. I guess and I hope, these changes convert Japanese domestic
SNSs from closed community to open community. If this is achieved, SNSs
will become more helpful tool for communicating with both Japan and USA
and exchanging information and opinions.
Some Recommendations from Japan
Finally, I want to recommend 2 new services from Japan.

First, this is Lang-8. Lang-8 is a kind of SNS for multi-lingual
language learning and language exchange. Lang-8 started in year 2008 and
now has 90K users from more than 190 countries and areas. In lang-8, we
can write diaries, articles, reports, and even papers in nonnative language
and can have the texts corrected by natives. Now, about 70% of users write in
languages other than Japanese. This service will be useful and helpful for
communication between Japanese speakers and English speakers if users
increase.

Second, this is the Researchmap which produced byDr. Noriko Arai.
She is a professor of National Institute of Informatics. This is a kind of SNS
for researchers and their supporters. I'm not sure whether this service will
become a de fact standard in Japanese academic field or not. Actually, now
there are just 1.6k people. But, just in this month, Researchmap launched its
English Version. If you are interested in, Please tell me and give me your
namecard, I’ll invite you. These examples are just for your reference.

That’s all. The tools I mentioned in my report are far from sufficient
for us. So, I want to discuss what tools and devices are required and what we
can do. Let me hear your opinion later.
Thank you.
