Social Media in Australia: A ‘Big Data’ Perspective on TwitterAxel Bruns
Invited presentation at the University of Melbourne, 4 April 2017.
Twitter research to date has focussed mainly on the study of isolated events, as described for example by specific hashtags or keywords relating to elections, natural disasters, public events, and other moments of heightened activity in the network. This limited focus is determined in part by the limitations placed on large-scale access to Twitter data by Twitter, Inc. itself. This research presents the first ever comprehensive study of a national Twittersphere as an entity in its own right. It examines the structure of the follower network amongst some 4 million Australian Twitter accounts and the dynamics of their day-to-day activities, and explores the Australian Twittersphere’s engagement with specific recent events.

Picturing the Social: Talk for Transforming Digital Methods Winter SchoolFarida Vis
This talk highlights the work of the Visual Social Media Lab and the Picturing the Social project. It summarises the key research questions and aims of the project. It highlights the value of interdisciplinarity and working closely with industry in this area. It also focuses on the way in which me might study different types of structures involved in the circulation and the scopic regimes that make social media images more or less visible. It also tries to unpack how we can start to think about APIs as 'method' and looks at the different ways in which we can get access to different kinds of social media image data. Both through public ('free') APIs and ('pay for') firehose data.

Abstract
To date, there is no research examining how adults with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and severe communication disability use Twitter, nor the use of Twitter in relation to ALS/MND beyond its use for fundraising and raising awareness. In this paper we (a) outline a rationale for the use of Twitter as a method of communication and information exchange for adults with ALS/MND, (b) detail multiple qualitative and quantitative methods used to analyse Twitter networks and tweet content in the our studies, and (c) present the results of two studies designed to provide insights on the use of Twitter by an adult with ALS/MND and by #ALS and #MND hashtag communities in Twitter. We will also discuss findings across the studies, implications for health service providers in Twitter, and directions for future Twitter research in relation to ALS/MND.

Second version of my talk. I tried to make it more focused and a better introduction. As ever, cute pictures need no explanation.
As for Up - try explaining the plot of it to someone who hasn't seen it... ridiculous, isn't it? There's no way to sell it that way, they have to see it. In the same way, to describe how Twitter works gives no indication as to its functionality. You have to play with it and learn by experience.
Talk given at the 5th Internation Conference on Communities and Technologies (Workshop C: Making Sense of Twitter). Thanks to Axel Bruns and Jean Burgess who organized a great session!

Terzaghi's soil bearing capacity theory, developed by Karl Terzaghi, is a fundamental principle in geotechnical engineering used to determine the bearing capacity of shallow foundations. This theory provides a method to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of soil, which is the maximum load per unit area that the soil can support without undergoing shear failure. The Calculation HTML Code included.
Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

Hybrid optimization of pumped hydro system and solar- Engr. Abdul-Azeez.pdffxintegritypublishin
Advancements in technology unveil a myriad of electrical and electronic breakthroughs geared towards efficiently harnessing limited resources to meet human energy demands. The optimization of hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems plays a pivotal role in utilizing natural resources effectively. This initiative not only benefits humanity but also fosters environmental sustainability. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.

23. Conclusions & Future Work
• Usage of Twitter in Conferences has increase over time and has
changed considerable: people are more likely to RT and share URLs
than to “talk” (replies and mentions) by Twitter
• Over time, the conversations get more scattered, but not the
“advertisement” or “resource sharing” of the RT network
• Total Twitter activity over the conference week helps to predict
returning to the conference, not only #hashtagged Twitter activity.
• CURRENT EXTENSION: use content-based features, sentiment
analysis, consider hypotheses of “communities of practice”
24. Limitations
• The analyses only considered types of messages (re-tweets,
mentions, URLs) and social network analysis’ metrics.
• Obtaining a representative sample of Twitter is a problem not solve
(at least for researchers in academia that can use only the Twitter API,
or other 3rd party APIs such as Topsy)
• We are covering a sample of conferences in the domain of Computer
and Information Science.

27. Thanks!
• And don’t forget today the social event (is included with the
conference registration) at
• Hotel Plaza San Francisco, 8:30pm
28. … but then, I decided to give a step back
• Our first attempt was studying 4 conference-communities (Wen,
Parra, Trattner at CSCW 2014) and see how groups of conference
attendees communicate on Twitter
• Faculty / Senior research students / Junior research students
• Others
• We expected to have an important participation from newcomers to
the conferences.
29. How this Research Started
• It started by creating a tool, Conference Navigator, in order to
support conference attendees
Modify/Enhance
Communities
Behavior
• Conference Navigator provides a ranking of top bookmarked talks,
recommendation of talks, “People who bookmarked this, also
bookmarked …”
30. … but then, I decided to give a step back
• Our first attempt was studying 4 conference-communities (Wen,

attendees communicate on Twitter

• Others
• We expected to have an important participation from newcomers
during the conferences.
We found out that Twitter
might not be always the best
entrance for newcomers in a
research community.
31. Random Sampling
• Use of TOPSY API: Search for a –or- b –or- …. –z-
• Pick 2/3 of the hours in a year (24 x 365)
• Per each hour sampled, pick randomly 2 minutes
• As a result, there will be a lot of tweets in several pages. Pick
randomly a result page
• Total tweets sampled: ~ 5.8 million tweets (2009 -2013)
• Distribution of RT, replies, URLs is not significantly different than D.
