•Synonyms: Chaste Tree, Man Ching,

•Biological source: It is obtained from
the leaves of the plant Vitex Negundo.
•Family: Verbenaceae

Morphology
• Large aromatic shrub with quadrangular, densely
whitish, tomentose branchlets.
• Bark: Thin , Colour : Grey.
• Leaves 3 to 5 foliolate
• Leaflets Lanceolate
• Lateral leaflets smaller than terminal ones.
• Flowers bluish purple
• Drupes: Globose
Microscopy
• Stomata: Absent in the upper epidermis and plenty on
lower side . Most are anomocytic.
• Trichomes: Both simple, covering glandular on the both
the surfaces but covering are plenty on the lower
surface, 1 - 3 celled uniseriate, with sharp pointed apex
and bulging base .
• Mesophyll: Consisting of 3 rows of palisade cells.
Vascular bundles protected on the both sides of
paremchymatous sheath.
• Midrib: Collenchymatous tissue below the uper and
lower epidermis. Xylem is crescent shaped.

Uses
• In the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
• Nirgundi decoction used for steam bath for joint
pains.
• Dried leaves when smoked also said to relieve
catarrh and headache.
• Used in sinuses and scrofulous sores.
• Oil is used for sloughing wounds and ulcers.
