Brahmi is a succulent herb found in wet, damp areas in India up to 1200 meters in elevation. It has flat, obovate leaves that are green with a bitter taste. Brahmi contains alkaloids like bacoside A and B, as well as other chemical constituents. It is used as a nervine tonic to treat conditions like asthma, epilepsy, and insanity, and has laxative, diuretic, and potential anticancer properties. It can be cultivated throughout the year in warm, humid conditions.

2. SYNONYM: Bacopa, brambhi, thyme-leaved Gratiola
B.S.: It consist of fresh leaves & stem of the plant known as Bacopa
moniera Linn.
Family: Scrophulariaceae (NLT 2.5% of bacoside A on dried bases)
• Geographical Source: It is a prostrate, succulant herb found in india,
in wet, damp & marshy places, upto 1200 m elevation

3. • Cultivation & Collection: suculant & water loving plant
• Grow under varying soil & climate condition.
• Grow faster in 30-40 ° C & humidity 65- 80 %, cultivated as summer
rainy season.
• Planted in march-june allowed to grow & proliferate through hot and
humid months of monsoon till september after which harvest should be
taken. (in S.Ind. It can be grow throughout year)
• Before planting, field should be ploughing, make free from weeds,
moistened the soil.
• Before removing from nursary, nursary should be flooded. Taking care
in cutting & dugging. Cuttings about 6-8 cm long, containing nodes
with root used for transplanting.
• 1 day before planting, vermicompost is spread on the surface of the
plots & mixed throughly with top 10 cm soil and then flooded.
• Cutting saw in wet soil at a 15 * 15 cm distance.
• Flood irrigation should be provoded immediately after planting.

• Color: green
• Taste: bitter
• Size: leaves are about 2cm.
• Shape: leaves: flachy, obovate, alternate, simple, entire, with broad
apex, sessile & lower surface is dotted.
• Flower: solitary, stalked, corola bluish white in color, & about 1 cm in
size. 1 of the 5 sepels is larger then others. Arise in axes of the leaves
in April-June. Capsule are Ovoid.

5. • CHEMICAL CONSTITUENT:
• Brahmin(Alkaloid) herpestin, & mixture of 3 alkaloid( saponin,Bacoside A
& B)
• Beutalic Acid, stgmesterol, monnierin, hersaponin. Bacoside A & B on acid
hydrolysis yield triterpenoid aglycone bacogenins A & B respectively.

6. Uses:
1) As a nervine tonic, asthama, epilapsy, insanity (madness)
2) It is aperient (laxative) and also diuretic.
3) Alcoholic extract used as anticancer activity.
