This is Catalyst's overview of how you can start making positive changes in your school to support healthy eating.
Here's what the presentation covers:
First we’ll talk a little bit about why we need healthy food in schools, and what the food is like at our schools.
Then we’re are going to break for two rounds of Catalyst’s “Family Food.” It’s like the game show Family Feud, but all about food, healthy eating, and what food is like at school. We’ve been talking with students at our schools to get their thoughts about food in general and about the food that’s offered at school, and in this game, you’ll have a chance to guess what they’re thinking.
We also want to talk about what we can do to get things moving in our schools and make sure we have healthy options that taste good. So first we’ll talk a little about questions you might get from your principal and food service staff if you talk to them about starting to make changes.
Then we’ll work in small groups and plan out some first steps you can take, like setting up a meeting to talk to your principal and food service staff.
1. The document discusses the behaviors and choices of an "eco-mummy" or environmentally conscious mother.
2. It provides a checklist of actions eco-mummies can take like choosing natural and green products for their baby, eating seasonal fruits and vegetables, informing themselves about environmentally friendly companies, and reusing items like clothes.
3. The goal of the eco-mummy is to avoid toxic substances, show their child the importance of protecting nature, and pass on environmental values from a young age.
This document discusses efforts by Maschio's Food Services and registered dietitians Hallie Smith and Sara Dash to combat childhood obesity through nutritious school meals in the Garfield School District. It outlines the nutritional standards that Maschio's meets for the National School Lunch Program, such as limiting fat and providing one-third of daily recommended nutrients. It also describes initiatives like highlighting fresh fruits and vegetables, increasing whole grains, and partnering with local farms for a farm-to-school program. The goal is to serve balanced and healthy meals to students to support their growth and development.
If your child is overweight, he or she is subject to many serious health risks, including asthma, bone and joint problems, and even cancer. As responsible parents, you should prevent obesity by improving your child’s diet and lifestyle.
GOTAFE has joined forces with the charity Eat Up to ensure that children in Shepparton schools do not go without food. Eat Up was established in 2013 when Lyndon Galea noticed many children faced going to school hungry. It provides 500 sandwiches per month to three local schools using surplus food from Foodshare. GOTAFE culinary students help prepare the lunches. The program supports vulnerable students whose parents may be experiencing hardships. Thanks to the collaboration between various groups, Eat Up is able to provide over 500 lunches per month to schools in a relatively cost-effective way. The goal is to eventually expand the successful model nationally.
The document discusses the hygiene conditions of food served in school canteens and their impact on students' health. It notes that according to health ministry reports, 75% of hospital admissions are due to unhealthy food, much of which comes from canteens. Often operated as businesses focused on profits rather than health, canteens provide easy access to fatty, unhealthy options with no guidance for students. The document proposes some ways to improve canteen options, such as providing healthier, appealing alternatives or limiting portions of unhealthy foods to encourage healthier choices.

The school canteen sells a variety of tasty but mostly unhealthy food like sandwiches, toast, juices, donuts, and chips to the children. It recently started selling fruits like bananas and apples which are healthier for the children but less popular. The two canteen workers are very polite and give the children whatever food items they want.
The document discusses marketing of unhealthy cereals to children. A study found that cereals marketed to children have much higher sugar, lower fiber, and more sodium than cereals marketed to adults. However, the author argues that cereal companies do not force parents to buy or feed these cereals to children. Rather, the problem lies with parents who purchase these nutritionally poor cereals and feed them to their children without understanding basic nutrition. The solution is for parents to educate themselves on nutrition and make informed choices about the foods they buy and feed their families.

Moms need convincing to choose milk over other beverages for their busy children aged 6-14. Milk provides essential nutrients like calcium, protein, vitamins and minerals that growing bodies need. The advertising should create a reason for moms to feel good about choosing milk, which has these eight nutrients in every glass. Suggested messages note that chocolate milk competes with soda while providing the same nutrients as regular milk, and that milk helps build strong teeth unlike soda or fruit drinks.
Child Obesity--Decreasing the Problem in the Lubbock Independent School Districtccnmn
The document discusses child obesity in the Lubbock Independent School District. It presents data showing high rates of childhood obesity and identifies causes such as unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity. The document analyzes problems with the school cafeteria menus and vending machines offering unhealthy options. Solutions proposed include educating parents about healthy habits, offering healthier meal options in schools, and replacing unhealthy snacks in vending machines with healthier alternatives like fruits and vegetables.
The document provides advice and guidelines from a nutritionist on promoting healthy eating habits for children. It recommends using a "Go, Slow, Whoa" approach to classify foods - with "Go" foods like fruits and vegetables being healthy options to focus on, "Slow" foods having some added fat or sugar in moderation, and limiting "Whoa" foods. Using behavioral economics in lunchroomsaleighb801
Using small changes based on behavioral economics principles can influence students' food choices in the school lunchroom. Placing fruit at the end of the lunch line and making it available as a replacement for milk can increase fruit selection. Similarly, positioning a salad bar in the center of the cafeteria rather than against the wall makes salads more visible and appealing to students. Allowing students to use trays also leads to healthier choices compared to when trays were removed. Requiring cash payment for desserts forces students to consciously decide if they want to spend money on those less nutritious options.
This document discusses factors contributing to higher obesity rates in the current generation compared to previous generations. It cites parental stress leading to more fast food consumption, poor meal choices at home and in schools, and lack of physical activity encouraged by parents. Fast food restaurants target kids in advertisements without providing nutritional information. Technology has reduced physical activity as online shopping and entertainment replace activities outside the home. Solutions proposed include making healthy choices more convenient and fun, providing nutrition information in restaurants, and community-based exercise programs.
Healthy Fundraisers in Elementary SchoolsJoanna Rybak
This document provides information and strategies for schools to implement healthy fundraisers as alternatives to traditional non-nutritious food fundraisers. It discusses that healthy fundraisers can be just as profitable while also supporting a healthy school environment. Various examples are given for both non-nutritious and healthy fundraising options. The document emphasizes creating a wellness team to discuss challenges and share ideas for profitable and healthy fundraising activities.
The document discusses replacing plastic flatware with stainless steel flatware in schools. It notes that elementary school children struggle with plastic sporks and reusable plastic utensils are sometimes thrown away by mistake. Stainless steel flatware is more durable and environmentally friendly. It will replace plastic flatware in schools over the 2014-15 school year to reduce costs and waste.

The document proposes a solution to improve concussion diagnosis and tracking of recovery. It describes developing a device that uses electrodes on the scalp to measure brain activity in different regions while the subject performs tasks. This would provide more accurate diagnosis of where brain damage occurred compared to current methods. Repeated use of the device could monitor recovery by seeing improved brain function over time in damaged areas. The goal is to prevent second-impact syndrome and help athletes and doctors better understand injury severity and recovery progress. A prototype was created using sponge electrodes, wires and a Bluetooth-enabled data analyzer to demonstrate feasibility. The potential impact is transforming concussion treatment and safety.

Farm to school programs aim to connect schools and local farms by featuring locally produced foods in school cafeterias. This gives students access to fresh, local foods while supporting local farmers. The programs also incorporate nutrition education into classrooms and partner with the community through activities like field trips and cooking lessons. While these programs have many benefits for students' health, local economies, and the environment, increasing costs and pressure from corporate interests make expanding organic options challenging.

The document discusses the impact of television advertising on children's food choices and behaviors. Through interviews and observations, it finds that kids are influenced by ads to prefer branded and packaged snacks over homemade foods. They demand products they see advertised, especially colorful and tempting foods. The cultivation theory suggests that extensive TV exposure shapes viewers' perceptions of reality. The ads analyzed create interest in unhealthy snacks like cheese slices and noodles. They may also influence kids to be materialistic and reluctant to share. Parental guidance is needed to help children understand ads' real intent and make informed choices.

The document discusses the impact of television advertising on children's food choices and behaviors. Through interviews and observations, it finds that kids are influenced by ads to prefer branded and packaged snacks over homemade foods. They demand products they see advertised, like cookies, chips, noodles and chocolates. The ads make these foods seem exciting and fun to eat but they are often unhealthy substitutes for fruits and vegetables. The constant exposure to ads can shape kids' perceptions and attitudes in ways that are not always positive or healthy in the long run.
The document discusses the issue of rising childhood obesity, with about 15% of children currently overweight. Parents have significant influence over their children's lifestyles and eating habits, with children of obese parents having a 50-80% chance of also being obese. The goal is to help at-risk families, especially single mothers in low-income families, recognize when their lifestyles are unhealthy and encourage changes in behavior. The proposed solution is an app that teaches children and parents about nutrition, exercise, and their impact on health through interactive avatars representing the user's BMI and health status.
The document discusses the issue of malnutrition and obesity. It notes that while malnutrition is typically associated with lack of resources in developing nations, in places like Canada and the US it often manifests as obesity instead. This is because people have access to cheap, convenient fast food but may lack time or money for nutritious home cooking. The document then outlines various stakeholders affected by obesity, including food banks, fast food franchises, childcare centers, and families. It also examines how factors like income, location, and the abundance of fast food restaurants in an area can impact individuals' daily nutrition and finances.

One in five children in Texas lives in a household that struggles with hunger. A new state law now requires high-needs schools to offer free breakfast to every student to address this issue. Studies show students who eat breakfast have better academic and behavioral outcomes. Schools that have implemented breakfast programs have seen increased participation from around 30% to over 80% as well as increased revenues. Serving breakfast in the classroom is the most effective model as it ensures students aren't singled out and have time to eat before classes start.

Opposing viewpoints in education: A Ban On Junk Food May Harm School Fundingalannajean18
Schools should focus on education rather than rely on profits from junk food vending machines. Healthy habits begin at home with parents, not schools, and banning junk food could harm school funding. While schools teach nutrition, providing junk food undermines those lessons and contributes to the obesity epidemic. In the past, school officials warned that vending machines with junk food threatened school lunch programs designed to provide healthy meals.
The document discusses evolving campaigns that promote breakfast for children to reduce obesity. Prior campaigns encouraged children to eat breakfast but did not emphasize nutritional quality, allowing fast food to fill the gap. The proposed new campaign will target low-income elementary students and their parents to educate them on making quick, healthy breakfasts through weekly seminars and cooking demonstrations, addressing issues of time, knowledge, and cost that prevent healthy eating. It will use a localized approach and focus on nutritional quality rather than just eating breakfast to better promote behavior change.

2. Identify a Problem/Opportunity
Schools are notorious for serving
unappetizing lunches. From bruised fruit to
half-frozen sandwiches, we need a
revolution. Policies regarding school
lunches result in hungry kids and a garbage
full of produce. Attempts to disguise
healthy choices like allowing fruits to be
sugar coated raisins or banana pudding
send the wrong message. This is a critical
time for kids to establish eating habits for
life.
3. Pick a Solution
The solution does not rest in schools, but in my business, My Lunch.
Parents and students can pre-order delicious, wholesome lunches from
the My Lunch App and select a nutritious meal with quality fruits and
vegetables. Then they can conveniently pick it up at their schools for a
relatively low price.
4. Define the Customer
I have two target markets for My Lunch: the moms
and the kids. Moms are constantly concerned about
their child having a great future and will love the
affordability, convenience, and quality food their child
will receive each day.
This will impact local farmers and artisans because we
will partner with them and use their fresh products.
Initially, I would expect My Lunch to impact 10-25% of
a school population, but those numbers would increase
as kids see their peers with my iconic green bags.
