MUST, MUST NOT, CAN,
CAN’T, HAVE TO, DON’T
HAVE TO
Must
 We use Must+verb (base form) when we feel
an obligation to do something or to talk about
rules and obligations.
Example:
I must phone my sister for her birthday.
You must turn off your cel phone at the movies.
Must Not
 We use Must Not + Verb (base form) when
we are not allowed to do something
(prohibited)
Example:
You must not eat in class.
You must not talk on the phone during class.
Have to
 We use Have to+verb (base form) when the
talk about rules and obligations. It’s very
similar to Must.
Example:
I have to pay taxes.
I have to turn off my phone during my english
class.
Don’t Have To
 We use Don’t Have to + verb (base form)
when we are not obliged to do something
Example:
I don’t have to write a long letter.
I don’t have to go to school this Monday.
Can
 We use Can + Verb (base form) to talk about
our ability to do something.
Example:
I can swim.
I can speak English.
Can’t
 We use Can’t + Verb (base form) when we
are not allowed to do something. Can’t and
must not have similar meanings.
Example:
You can’t eat in the class.
You can’t go out this weekend.
