Editor's Notes
DURING THE TIME WHEN THE SPANIARDS CAME TO THE PHILIPPINES, THEY WERE ABLE TO INFLUENCE NOT ONLY OUR CULTURAL PRACTICES BUT ALSO OUR BELIEFS AND RELIGION. THAT IS WHY WE HAVE LITURGICAL AND DEVOTIONAL MUSIC.
Philippine epic that narrates about the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; also called as “Pabasa”
Participants chant a book with stanzas of five lines of eight syllables.
It is commonly sung in a dramatic theme during the Holy Week or “Semana Santa”.
Celebrated during pre-dawn of Easter Sunday. It is a scene that shows the Risen Christ’s meeting with his mother Mary. It is usually held outside the church where there is a prepared arch and a child portraying an angel that will lift the mourning veil of the image of the Virgin Mary.
A child dressed as an angel is lowered by ropes from a high platform to lift the mourning veil of the grieving mother while other children dressed in angel costumes sing the “Regina Coeli Laetare” meaning “Queen of Heaven”
A Spanish term for “Flowers of May.” A festival held in the Philippines in the month of May and one of the May devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary that lasts for the entire month.
A religious celebration throughout the Philippines. It is the highlight during the celebration of the Flores de Mayo. A colorful event that recalls the finding of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena and her son, Emperor Constantine.
Sagalas and escorts parade the streets of the community, the musiko (brass band) accompanies the procession with the music “Dios Te Salve Maria.”
