Mumps is caused by a virus that is spread through direct contact, airborne droplets, or surfaces contaminated with saliva or urine. It is classified based on surface antigens and can affect various organs beyond just causing swelling of the parotid glands. The current mumps vaccine strain has a very low risk of causing post-vaccine meningitis.
