MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
By Joyce Bowen
SHORT CLIP
www.multiplesclerosis.com/us/about_ms.php
MS is still a mystery to the
medical field. The blood/brain
barrier breaks down allowing
immune cells (T cells) to cross
over and start attacking myelin
sheath in the brain and the
spinal cord.
Women develop
the disease at
twice the rate of
men

The first known case is found in the
diary of Augustus d’Este in the
beginning of the 19th century. Multiple
Sclerosis was recognized as a disease
by French, German, and English
scientists between 1835 and 1872.
recognition was delayed in North
America until after WWI. It is a difficult
disease to diagnose.
My first symptom was fatigue and for
this reason I assume this is the onset.
I was tested for Guillain-Barre a
number of times. I had no sensitivity
to heat, but I did experience cold
hands and feet. I was treated for
arthritis, although I did not experience
any discomfort from it.
NUTRITION AND MS
 Books on diet and MS used for this presentation:
 The MS Recovery Diet by Ann Sawyer and Judith
Bachrach
 The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book by Roy Lavor
Swank and Barbara Brewer Dugan
Dr. Roy Swank in the Multiple
Scleorsis Diet book believes
people with MS do not
metabolize fats or lipids properly
allowing the formation of
microembolisms. Formations in
the small capillaries near the
spinal cord facilitates breeches.
The MS Recovery diet
recommends abstinence from
certain grains (containing gluten),
eggs, legumes, sugar, and dairy.
It also recommends low fat.
Foods recommended are fruits,
vegetables, wild meats, fish, and
nuts.
It is thought that in MS, food
allergies could activate
immune cells in the body
which go on to attack the CNS
through the damaged Blood
Brain Barrier.
 Dr. Swank in the Multiple Sclerosis Diet
book recommends the following: no red
meat for the first year (including the dark
meat of chicken and turkey). After the first
year, 3 oz of red meat will be allowed per
week. Skim milk will be allowed, but any
milk containing 1% butterfat or more is not
allowed. All processed foods containing
saturated fat are to be eliminated.
Saturated fat must never exceed 15
grams a day. Unsaturated fat
(oils) must be consumed at a
minimum of 4 teaspoons a day
with a max of 10 teaspoons. One
teaspoon of cod liver oil per day.
A multivitamin is recommended.
Forbidden: whole milk, cream, butter, margarine, sour
cream, ice cream, ice milk, cheese exceeding 1 %
butterfat, any creamed cottage cheese, imitation
dairy products containing hydrogenated oils. All
packaged commercial mixes for cakes, cookies,
pastries, pancakes, biscuits, and desert bread
products if they contain hydrogenated oils. Chili,
soups, stews, spaghetti, meat sauces, pork and
beans, hash, canned chicken and turkey. Chips,
crackers, breads, cereals, pasta. Commercially
canned foods.
Commercial breads contain a lesser amount of
shortening, so may be had in any amount. Fruits,
vegetables, and juices are permissible. All frozen
or canned vegetables without butter or high-fat
seasonings. 3 eggs are allowed a week – no more
than 1 a day. Egg whites – any quantity.
Chocolates are forbidden. White meat of chicken
and turkey with skin removed before cooking are
allowed in any amount. Cod, abalone, halibut,
snapper, smelt, flounder, sole, sturgeon, tuna
canned in water, shark, mahimahi, haddock, perch,
polluck, etc. White fish are allowed in any amount.
Meats that are forbidden:
spareribs, goose, duck, bacon,
lunch meats, salami,
frankfurters, ground turkey or
chicken, wieners (including
chicken and turkey), sausages.
Dr. Swanks diet seeks too limit
hydrogenated and saturated
fats, whereas the MS
Recovery Diet seeks to limit
certain foods and fats.
Ann Sawyer and Judith Bachrach
believe that MS can go into
complete remission with their
careful diet. Dr. Swank does not.
In any case, a low-fat diet is a
good thing.
