Spread Sheet
Spreadsheet is a widely used type of application
software. It allows users to organize data in rows
and columns. A collection of rows and columns is
called worksheet. Spreadsheet provides the
features to create, edit and format worksheets. It
can also be used to perform different types of
calculation on data in worksheets.
Spreadsheet also provides the facility to display data
graphically using charts. Excel is popular
spreadsheet software.
Use of Spreadsheet
Application
• It can be used by corporations to track
profit and losses.
• Economists can generate growth graphs
of the country’s economy.
• Statisticians can calculate the probability
of crashing the market.
• Women can manage their household
budgets
Advantages of SS
Computerized spreadsheets can calculate data
easily, accurately and efficiently. The large
quantities of numbers can be added,
subtracted, multiplied, and divided.
• It increases the ease and speed of
calculating.
• It makes it easy t modify information and
recalculate automatically.
• It displays numeric data as a chart or graphs.
• It incorporates numeric data into another
software application.
Disadvantages of SS
• Spreadsheets program cannot process a
large volume of data quickly.
• It does not provide much programming
facilities.
Features of SS
• Grid of Row and Columns: The spreadsheet is a
grid of rows and columns. Each row is assigned a
number and each column is assigned a letter. The
intersection of row and column is called is called
cell.
• Formulas: The formula performs calculations on
the data in spreadsheet. It displays the resulting
value in the cell containing the formula.
• Built-in-functions: spreadsheet has many built-in
functions. Functions can perform different types of
calculations. Lengthy calculations can be applied
on worksheet easily by using functions.

and columns where the user can enter data.
• Workbook: It is a group of worksheets saved
together as one file. By default a workbook
contains 3 worksheets.
• Cell: The intersection of row and column is
called cell.
• Cell Address: cell address or cell reference
identifier the location of a cell or group of
cells in worksheet. It consists of column letter
and row number. For example is C3

• Active cell: The currently selected cell is called
active call. It is the cell in which data is entered or
edited at a given time.
• Title bar: It is located at the very top of the screen.
Spreadsheet displays the name of the current
workbook on it.
• Menu Bar: It is a collection of useful commands
displayed on the top of screen.
• Tool Bar: Toolbars are shortcuts to menu
commands. Toolbars are generally located just
below the menu bar. Toolbars consist of icons that
act as shortcuts to the commands.

• Formula Bar: The formula bar displays the
values or formula used in the active cell. It
can be used to edit cell contents easily.
• Status Bar: The status bar appears at the
bottom of the spreadsheet interface. It
displays the information about a command.
• 3D Sheet: Early spreadsheet programs
provided only one worksheet at a time. The
workbook could contain just one worksheet.
The new spreadsheets are called 3D
worksheet.
