and nation states. Many Serbians voice the need for self autonomy, often citing being ruled by
outsiders for hundreds of years. Today Serbia seen by its people as an unfinished state. Thus, the need
for creating autonomous identity is especially relevant.1 Ristic in her essay on Serbian identity, that
the formation of a nation state s identity is crucial to its wellbeing. In general, identity is built upon
three essential interdependent elements: 1. birth, which creates ties to family, nation and to a concrete
geographical space; 2. culture, which forms individuals and groups spiritually and emotionally; 3.
acceptance of common values which help creating communities of values. Hence identity can be
determined on the basis of the following categories: place of living (town or district of town, country,
continent etc), religion, family, profession, nation, age class, ideology etc.2
The problem with Serbian national identity is that there is not enough security in the aforementioned
criterion historically. Ristic states that defining national identity upon values and ideology leads in
Serbia to two relatively opposite understandings of national identity and the values and norms

Los Folkloristas
The Miller Outdoor Theatre is bringing in the Cinco de Mayo celebration early with a concert by Los
Folkloristas on Sunday.
This concert is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Los Folkloristas is also celebrating its 50th year as a
performing group. The seven piece group specializes in traditional folk music of Latin American
countries and Mexico during the pre Columbian period. Los Folkloristas has about 100 different
instruments that hail from about 15 countries in the region. The group has also toured in several
countries including Italy, German, Spain, Cuba, Colombia, Nicaragua and throughout the U.S. and
Canada.
Los Folkloristas was founded in 1966 and over its lifetime has included 48 multi instrumentalists.

Education reform needs to be one of the top priorities among our country. Our current educational
system requires people to pay thousands of dollars for a higher education. Students are forced to take
out loans that put them into severe debt for the duration of their live. Low income students, especially,
do not have many options nor are they able to afford higher education and the price is steadily
increasing. It is the government s duty to make this at the forefront of their problems because
education is tied to national success, and will only strengthen our country. Like most things, this issue

It seemed that most of the controversy in the water crisis was either about water rights issues or about
the current water levels compared to the fish population, which in turn had effects on the endangered
species of this area. Very rarely did anyone speak about the Native American s wants or needs
concerning the Klamath River water crisis. The Natives feel that they should have some say about
what decisions are going to be made concerning the area since they have been in the Klamath are
longer than any other group.
As little as the Native Americans were discussed, the needs of the commercial fisherman were even
less than them. I don t think more than one person out of all the guest lecturers and people we heard
from on our class trip had discussed any of the feelings of the fisherman. I m not quite certain which
guest lecturer talked about their needs, but they did mention that the commercial fisherman felt that
