Importance of the Past in Willa Cather s My Antonia Essay
The Importance of the Past in Willa Cather s My Antonia
In My Antonia, Willa Cather emphasizes the importance of the past through Jum Burden s narration.
Jim Burden realizes at the conclusion of the novel how much he enjoyed his childhood days and how
much his memories mean to him. There are three events that Cather included in the novel which
contribute greatly to the overall theme, concerning the importance of the past.
One event is in Chapter II of Book III. Jim decides to write about his youth in Nebraska as Vergil has
just done. As he is thinking about this, Lena Lingard comes to the door and he is excited to see her.
Once again he begins to think about the past. Even after she left, just her presence had impacted his ...

He spends a day in Black Hawk that ends in a disappointment since none of his childhood friends are
around. Walking out to the edge of town, he finds a half mile stretch of the old wagon road which used
to run like a wild thing across the open prairie. The memory of his first ride over that road comes to
him strongly. Now he feels that this road has brought him and Antonia back together. It is the road of
Destiny along which their lives have traveled.
Another event appears in chapter 14 of book II. Antonia and Jim are having a picnic by the river. It is
an important event for many reasons. First, the past is brought up, when Antonia says, It would be like
old times. The reader can only be reminded of the events that have taken place in Book I. For example
when Jim walks two miles towards the river. At the riverbank he takes a swim and realizes how much
he will miss this river once he goes off to college. Jim skated, swam and fished on this river
throughout his childhood. Second, it is the last shared afternoon of Jim and Antonia s youth.
Throughout their youth, Jim and Antonia share a number of memorable moments, like the time when
Jim teaches Antonia how to read. However, this is their last day together in their childhood. Soon, Jim
will be going away to college so the future is near. Then, he finds Antonia crying because she is
looking at overhanging bushes that remind her of Bohemia. It makes me homesick,

Dr. Stevin Gehrke s Lab
Upon arriving as a student at the University of Kansas, I immediately took an interest in numerous
extracurricular activities and organizations. I have established myself as a leader in multiple
organizations, including my role as vice president in the Biomedical Engineering Society at KU.
These organizations have provided fantastic experiences, but I found myself needing more. I found
enjoyment and success in my classes, but I was eager to apply my knowledge. I sought out positions
in various research groups on campus, and I eventually pursued an opportunity to partake in
undergraduate research involving hydrogels and their characteristics in Dr. Stevin Gehrke s lab. In this
lab, I create and characterize various polymer based hydrogels by way of click chemistry using
multiple crosslink wavelengths and times as well as varying concentrations of different monomers,
polymers, and photoinitiators. I perform mechanical assessments that include measurement of
swelling degrees and compression testing to determine various moduli for characterization of gels.
These assessments are performed to determine the most suitable gels for biomedical uses such as cell
encapsulation and drug delivery. It has been the first real opportunity I ve had to utilize my passion
and skills for important and relevant advancements in the scientific community. I have learned the
importance of laboratory safety and have implemented these practices. I have further developed basic
skills that are necessary

Embryonic Stem Cell Debate
Embryonic stem cell research has been a heated debate for upwards of 30 years due to the
controversial nature of extracting embryos for research purposes. Recently the ban for federal funding
to research embryos has been lifted; therefore, sparking even more debate on whether or not
embryonic stem cells research is ethical. Embryonic stem cell research is the extracting of embryos in
order to conduct research in cell repair and growth. There are two moral principles to choose between:
is it used to prevent or help suffering and pain, or should we respect the value of human life?
Embryonic stem cell research is considered murder by many. Also, with thousands of embryos
preserved in in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics, it appears that there ... Show more content on

Linda Bevington, director of research for the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity stated, A lot of
proponents of the stem cell research are saying these embryos are extras... so we might as well just
take their cells and create some therapies... however, it is possible to adopt those embryos (Robinson,
2002). Thirdly, human embryos are treated as mere research material, not as human objects deserving
respect (Wills, 2001, p. 115). The Nuremberg Code states that not only must the human subject give
consent, but also scientists are to protect the subject against injury, disability or death. The embryos
most certainly are not giving consent and are definitely not being protected. Lastly, embryonic stem
cells pose risks for patients because they have the tendency to form tumors and produce immune
rejection. A patient with Parkinson s disease received an injection of fetal brain tissue. Two years later,
the patient had passed. An autopsy discovered that the skin and hair tissue had filled the ventricles of
his brain, cutting off his breathing (Wills, 2001,

Bounce Temperature Experiment
Height of Ball Drop vs. Bounce Height of Ball Lab Conclusion
WHAT HAPPENED?
The greater the height of ball drop, the higher the bounce height of the ball.
With a drop height of 50 cm, the average ball bounce height was 42 cm, with a drop height of 100 cm,
the average bounce height was 76.3 cm, and when dropped at 150 cm, the ball bounce height was
110.6 cm.
My hypothesis was supported.
WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
When the ball was held at a higher height, it had more Gravitational Potential Energy, because G.P.E
depends on height above the ground, and mass of the object (mass remained the same).
Since the ball had a greater amount of G.P.E, it converted into more kinetic energy, or motion energy,
when it was dropped. So, it hit the ground with a

The Homelessness Of A Home
Having a Home People cannot be fulfilled without a home, because a home is a place people can go
back to, a place that gives them stability, where people can have their own privacy, gives them
comfort, and can symbolize something different. Without a home, people cannot be fulfilled, there are
only places in which they can rest, but never sleep; there is no place that they can call their own.
People with a home always have a place to go back to, they know that no matter what happens that
place will always be there. With out a home a person does not have this; they would have to constantly
think of the next area to go to for shelter. They would have to always plan ahead of time. With out a
home they would not have that stability that comes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For some people it is not the home that comforts them, but it is the people that live in it, their family is
what comforts them rather than the home. For other people the home is a place that holds nothing
more than bad memories that they want nothing more than to forget. For some people a home is not
required for fulfillment, their home is just a place for them to sleep then go out and live their life,
home is just a rest stop for them. There are many people who travel the world for weeks at a time, they
sleep in run down hotels or not even in proper shelter, they do not go back to a home, but they still
achieve fulfillment. Going around the world helping people who are less fortunate is what fulfills
them. People who tend not to have a home have other ways of fulfillment. Then there are people who
are minimalist who attempt to live on as little as possible, for them their home is bare and maybe
small. For minimalist the home is not there to comfort them or give them stability, the home is just a
place that they bought because they had to if they did not want to rely on anyone (Quindlen) else for

Why Were The Colonial Days So Important
The Colonial days
By: Gabriella Freiberg
Why were the colonial days so important?
The colonial days were so important because if we didn t have these settlers come and build the
colonies, we wouldn t be living here today. The 13 colonies that have made up this land are New
Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania,
Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. There were so many
things they did to get food, water, resources, and etc. They were very creative people and used lots of
different inventions to live and get resources that they didn t have. One was the triangular trade route.
The name was given by the route which the goods from the colonies were taken back to Europe.
Europe made the things they traded for and sold them back to another territory. While the triangular
trade route started in the 1500 s it really didn t start working until the mid 1600 s. Not all tribes used
the triangular trade route some tribes just used their own inventions to get from place to place. They
had many jobs back then to keep the places running.

Abstract:
In the last 5 years the usage of internet has increased vastly. Internet attacks has been increasing. As
attacks are increasing there is no security for the network related data bases. We need urgently a
database protection system against the attacks in order keep the data securely.
This paper reviews about the SQL attacks, database protection system which is used between the
database and web application. There are different protective measures for the different users to provide
effective security of the database.
Introduction:
Since the rapid increase of use of Internet, computer network technology has rapid growth. Now a day
s internet is used in almost every fields like governments, business and health care and schools etc.

Networks play key role in these computer era. It brings convenience, along with it also brings the
malicious attackers. Network attackers are targeting the network database, to get the secured data. The
most common attack are SQL attacks. SQL statements are the tools of SQL attacks.
SQL Attacks:
The Principles of SQL attacks:
The most common attacks on the web are SQL attacks. SQL means Structured Query Language. SQL
is used by the relational databases to perform the database operations. Generally web servers use
databases to store the information. Every site on the web mostly uses the databases. SQL is also one

Comparing Orwell And Anthem, By Ayn Rand
Secrets in the Shadows
Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one
(Thomas Paine). 1984, written by George Orwell, and Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, are both
dystopian novels written to develop the idea of an overpowering government. Winston Smith, the
protagonist of 1984, is a member of the Outer Party in the new world of Oceania where all thoughts
are observed and each hope obliterated. Winston works in the Ministry of Truth where he erases
history in order to form the present, however, Winston wonders about the circumstances of his world,
run by the ubiquitous face of Big Brother, and hopes for a time, free of the suffocating hands of the
Party, in order to obtain freedom. Along with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
George Orwell writes about the hope that Winston and O Brien hold that someday they will be able to
meet in the light without fear, when O Brien naively says, We shall meet in the place where there is no
darkness, O Brien had said to him. He knew what it meant, or thought he knew. The place where there
is no darkness was the imagined future, which one would never see, but which, by foreknowledge, one
could mystically share in (Orwell 107). Along with Orwell, the Bible alludes to the revelations in the
light when Luke writes, Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and
what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops (English Standard
Version, Luke 12.3). O Brien is telling Winston that even though they are unable to meet in the all
telling daylight, someday his hope is that they will be able to meet somewhere other than under the
cover of darkness. Winston and O Brien are both hoping to one day live in a society where freedom is
available and privacy is an achievable feat, however they are unable to do so now because the light
exposes all secrets because it shines through the darkness and takes away their solitude. Then, Luke
writes that each word uttered in the darkness of confinement will be heard in the light, for the light
exposes all secrets. Both authors

Anti Discrimination In Australia
Australian Anti discrimination law has a relatively short history dating back to the mid 1970s, which is
70 years later than the Commonwealth of Australian Constitution Act 1900. Although not being
officially identified, the first Australian anti discrimination legislation was enacted in the 1960s,
following the dismantlement of the White Australian policy. This first unofficial anti discrimination
legislation prohibited discrimination on the ground of race in certain aspects of employment. Shortly
after, the Whitlam Labor Government passed the first official anti discrimination legislation in 1975,
which was the Racial Discrimination Act 1975(Cth) at the Federal level. (Chris Ronalds, 2012) Due to

Traditional cost system is judged in that it is suitable to manufacture the required product at minimum

However, as a new member with a new product, electronic product in North American market, the

Physics Of A Baseball Player Analysis
As in most racquet/bat/stick dons, a baseball player s goal is to convey the greatest measure of energy
conceivable at effect. This energy is then exchanged to the ball, quickening it to a high velocity
(Adair, 2002). The direction and speed of the batted ball are the essential contributing components to
the consequence of the hit. A batted ball with high speed can bring about one of at least two successful
results, depending upon the ball s direction. In the event that the direction of the ball is higher, the ball
can arrive somewhere down in the outfield for an additional fair hit or perhaps go over the wall for a
home run. These outcomes are very great for the batter.
Energy is made by the player through his use of the kinetic chain (Race,

Essay about Failures in a Distributed System
Failures in a Distributed System Paper Phyllis Lenoir POS/355 November 19, 2012 Asho Rao A
distributed system is an application that executes a collection of protocols to coordinate the actions of
multiple processes on a network, where all component work together to perform a single set of related
tasks. A distributed system can be much larger and more powerful given the combined capabilities of
the distributed components, than combinations of stand alone systems. But it s not easy for a
distributed system to be useful, it must be reliable. This is a difficult goal to achieve because of the
complexity of the interactions between simultaneously running components. A distributed system
must have the following characteristics: * ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Four types of failures that can occur in a distributed system are: * Halting failures: A component
simply stops. There is no way to detect the failure except by timeout: it either stops sending I m alive
(heartbeat) messages or fails to respond to requests. Your computer freezing is a halting failure. *
Omission failures: Failure to send/receive messages primarily due to lack of buffering space, which
causes a message to be discarded with no notification to either the sender or receiver. This can happen
when routers become overloaded. * Network failures: A network link breaks. * Timing failures: A
temporal property of the system is violated. For example, clocks on different computers which are
used to coordinate processes are not synchronized when a message is delayed longer than a threshold
period, etc. www.code.google.com Timing failures there is suspicion of a possible failure related to the
motherboard. This can be a result of a specific message strongly implicating the motherboard in some
sort of erratic system behavior. It may also be the case that the motherboard probably isn t the
problem, but that we want to rule it out as a possible cause. Since the motherboard is where all the
other components meet and connect, a bad motherboard can affect virtually any other part of the PC.
For this reason the motherboard must often be checked to ensure it is working properly, even if it is
unlikely to be the cause of whatever is

Hamlet s life and this personal look is something unique that was not seen before Shakespeare s time.
Hamlet is not only a look into the internal conflicts of a troubled man, but it is also an investigation of

My Love For Music Education
Ever since my years in elementary school, I have had a love for music. This love developed in middle
school where the notion of teaching music came to me. In high school, I knew the profession that was
right for me was music education. After graduation, I began my journey to my calling by attending
Shepherd University.
During my time at Shepherd University, I excelled in music theory and aural skills. I received many
accolades for these skills, including an outstanding sophomore award and a music theory and aural
skills tutoring award. My hard work led me to pass most of my courses with little worry, however one
course had a reputation for its difficulty. This class was General Music Pedagogy and 21st Century
Technology. The professor, Dr. David Gonzol was passionate about Kodaly and Orff Schulwerk
method, and this reflected in the course. We had play parties, played on Orff instruments, taught mock
lessons and compiled a collection of folk songs for use in presenting rhythmic and melodic elements.

The Problem With Drugs And Drugs Essay
Denying you have a problem with drugs when the facts demonstrate otherwise is one of the greatest
hindrances to recovery. After all, what is there to recover from if you don t have a problem?
But deep inside you know the truth. It s like the person who drinks a case of beer every day yet denies
being an alcoholic because It s only beer, not the hard stuff. For the opioid addict, similar excuses are
It s only painkillers, not heroin, I only snort, never inject, or My friends use more me.
You have an addiction because opioids control you and adversely affect most every aspect of your life.
Accepting that you are an addict is long overdue.
Let s look at where you are in the scheme of things. Are you wondering if treatment is the right for
you or if this is the right time to do it? Are you seeking treatment because a family member, friend,
employer, or the court is pushing you in that direction? I hope you want to recover for the most
important reason of all you are sick and tired of being on the addiction merry go round and want to
stop using.
Where you are starting from will likely determine how you will finish.
You must be willing to work for change for change to happen. Don t expect sobriety to take hold
unless you are willing to work for it. It s as basic as that. You can probably come up with a thousand
and one excuses why you keep using, but not one is doing you any good because of the negative
consequences you experience from using.

Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Euro
The European Union is not perfect. It has its own weaknesses and faults as well. Therefore, now I
would like to write a short description about the mistakes of the monetary union. Then I put a question
to all of us if the Eurozone, and especially the Euro, need to be reformed after the last years
experiences. Finally at the end of this subsection I briefly summarize the negative effects of the crisis
on the EU as a single currency area.
First of all, there is some structural mistake which should be corrected. For instance, there were a lot
of real estate price bubbles and credit bubbles among the countries in the periphery of the Union
because of cheap credits. The Eurozone had no proper institutional background to predict the

Additionally, in connection with this topic, I would like to bring up the example of Sweden just in
very briefly. Sweden has had the opportunity to adopt the Euro since 2006 but they have not
introduced it yet. Their government supports the idea of that the main and last judgement should be
done by the population but they are waiting for the proper time for the referendum. This kind of
behaviour could be experienced in Hungary too, probably in order to profit from the process as much
as we could. Therefore, the next question is: What if this behaviour could make negative effects on
other countries, for example on Hungary, and influence them towards denying the Euro? However, we
can see on Figure 14 that most of the people in Hungary want to introduce the single currency
according to that opinion poll. Hence, it seems that temporarily we do not want to follow the way of
the northern country. In addition, recently Sweden does [also] not have a target date to adopt the euro
just like Hungary. Anyway, our government has a lot to do (e.g. implementing all the convergence
criteria) up to that time we could think about this decision whether the best solution is for

purchasing a general motor insurance is not sufficient enough, and so many vehicle insurance

Two Places Research Paper
A place were I lose all my worries. A place that brings me happiness. A place that makes me feel in
paradise. That place, is the beach. I remember going there with my family on a bright sunny Saturday.
Smiles on everyone s face, no negative energy but pure positive. It was a nice and enjoyable day, I had
lots of fun playing with my family in the water and also enjoying a delicious lunch together. I hope
someday, we can have another day like this where we can forget about work and school and just enjoy
a day full of excitement. Whenever that day may be, I just hope it s legitimately soon. We all woke up
early to arrive at an early time. My mom and dad getting ready in one bathroom while we used the

Personally all ate them with big bright and happy smiles. Each one had some caprisuns along with our
sandwiches. I sat on my towel I brought so I can sit down on the golden sand. I had my legs crossed as
I was eating while looking at my surroundings. Couples walking by holding hands, a group of friends
playing volleyball, and other families eating as well. There was lots of bright colored umbrella s

seawater as the slightly winds where blowing threw. I m not actually a talkative person. I m more like
a shy person, usually sometimes I like to just go into my little world and pay more attention to my
surroundings. I love how when you look out towards the dark blue ocean, you can inspect just water
and water, it s like half of the world is just water, never ending water. You can eye some seagulls out
in the ocean hunting for food or just chilling there. We played some games but mostly volleyball even
though I m not really good at it. But after we decided to pack and head back home. All of us where all

Native American Cultural Artifacts
Human beings, desire to maintain a connection with the past is achieved through the languages
spoken, the various cultures practiced, and sadly through acquiring of cultural property by the means
of grave robbing. Native Americans wanted justice for these past mistreatments and control over their
history. According to Chip Colwell, campaigning, repatriation of indigenous artifacts began in the
1960s by indigenous activism. Finally, on November 16, 1990, The United States Government passed

The federal government s intentions are pure with the passing of NAGPRA. However, NAGPRA has a
considerable number of debatable implications regarding Native Americans. To fall under NAGPRA s
jurisdiction, a tribe is required to have federal recognition. Federal recognition requires a cultural
group, such as Native Americans, to abide by federal standards. Non compliance is an issue prevalent
today regarding institutions and companies; the lack of compliance is rooted in the absence of strong
restrictions and penalties for institutions and companies. International politics inhibit the act of global
reparation. International representatives and museum officials leading repatriation processes, results in
a more efficient way of returning artifacts to the rightful owner without political restrictions. All in all,
the Native American Graves Protection Act made significant important changes over the years,
however, with ever advancing United States and American Indian Tribes the outdated act is in need of

Children Of A Lesser God Summary
In Children of a Lesser God, the perception of deafness by hearing individuals is one of inferiority by
James. People who assume deaf individuals signing as inferior in some way, are not able to recognize
the person as someone who simply just communicates in a different language. Like with any
individual, the only way to break the us vs them barrier is to get to know the person, no matter who, is
by a means of communication that satisfies and connects both parties.
Firstly, there are multiple perceptions on the deaf community. James was not able to respect Sarah s
decision to communicate in her language since he held speaking and lip reading to a superior standard
to signing. He had view closer to that of an oralist and wanted Sarah to overcome by attempting to
speak and read lips, so that [she] could better keep pace with [her] normal competitors (Baynton). This
puts an emphasis on deaf people and signing as primitive and inferior when compared to speaking.
Another perception of deafness is one of having a disability that is easily accommodated by signing
and other forms of communication in order to survive in the world of hearing. This is a view of the
principal, Dr. Franklin and is labeled as combinist . The final, contrasting perception is that of the
scholar that James and Sarah visit. She was able to not only survive with her abilities but also to
thrive. In the scenes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teaching basic sign language in school can provide vital knowledge for possible emergency situations
and other interactions with deaf individuals. However, it is not the ultimate solution to breaking down
the barrier between the us vs them . The only way to stop the stereotyping of deaf people is based on
the view of the individual. Society can change rules but unless each individual is able to gain the
experience of communicating with deaf individuals, prejudices will

The Attachment Theory in Child Psychology Essay
The Attachment Theory in Child Psychology The term attachment describes an infant s tendency to
seek closeness to particular people and to feel more secure in their presence (Atkinson et al, 2000,
p90). This essay will attempt to provide a brief and up to date summary of attachment theory and
research, show how it is linked to Child Abuse, the Family, and Children and Divorce, critically
evaluating attachment s predictive value.
One of the most influential theories in the history of attachment has been that of John Bowlby

However, the political implications of the era in which it was developed cannot be ignored with men
returning from war and needing jobs back! In contrast, Freud Dann (1951) found that the negative
outcome for the child of deprivation (lost or separated from mother), or privation (no particular person
to attach to), in concentration camps, was alleviated by the company of other children. cheekycool
Bowlby s somewhat pessimistic view of the consequences of maternal separation/deprivation has been
actively debated and was the catalyst for much contemporary work. Rutter (1971) in Rutter (1999)
p65, challenged Bowlby s (1960) findings that linked significant separations in early childhood with
stealing tendencies/delinquency in boys. He found that emotional disturbances related to the reasons
for separation from the primary caregiver, i.e. serious tensions at home, parents with mental illness
and acrimonious divorces were responsible for later delinquency, rather than the separation itself.
Tizard (1989) also challenged monotropy finding adopted

Intergovernmental Organizations and Non-Goverment...
1. What differences exist between IGOs and NGOs (e.g. how can you tell them apart)?
Non governmental organization (NGO) is an organization of general interest and does not belong to
the Government nor to an international institution. It does not prevent it from cooperating or receiving
assistance and funding from governments, it was founded without active control of a national
government and it is a not for profit organization and are involved in every major international issue.
If the organization activities go beyond the country s borders, it becomes an international NGO like
Doctors Without Borders , Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch . On the other hand the
Intergovernmental organization (IGO) is an international legal entity established by two or more
States under an agreement between consenting, and aims to achieve goals and common interests in the
following fields: political, military, social, economic, health, education and human rights. [1]
2. What does The Tragedy of the Commons refer to?
An economic term used most often in relation to sustainable development, to link economic growth
and environmental protection as well as in discussions about global warming. Garrett Hardin first
introduced it in 1968 in an article in describing the need for individuals to adopt a positive change in
their principles and behaviors. Tragedy of Commons, describes the state of depletion of a shared

Adolf Hitler s Rise To Power Essay
Adolf Hitler s rise to power in Germany began in September 1919 when he made the decision to join
the political party known as the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei DAP (German Workers Party). The name was
changed in 1920 to the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei NSDAP (National Socialist
German Workers Party, more widely known now as the Nazi Party). This political party was anti
Marxist, anti Semitic and opposed to the democratic post war government of the Weimar Republic and
the Treaty of Versailles although at first, the Nazis claimed to be both nationalist and socialist. Hitler
rose to a place of status in the early years of the party and he was by far one of the best speakers.
Because of this he gave other party members an ultimatum: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although he was banned from speaking until 1927, the party engaged in electoral battles in which
Hitler participated as a speaker and organiser. He also rightfully reverted to using constitutional
means, thus organising the Hitler Youth, propaganda campaigns, local branches of the party, which
tried to get Nazis elected to the Reichstag, the SS as his personal bodyguard (set up in 1925) and
finally local branches of the party that tried to get Nazi members elected to the Reichstag. For Hitler,
1925 was a year he spent successfully rebuilding the party and consolidating his position as absolute
leader over the Nazis. Amid this success, Hitler called for his first mass rally since his release from
prison in the city of Weimar, located in the German state of Thuringia, which was one of the few states
where he could legally speak in public. However, in 1926 Hitler was becoming concerned that the
Nazi Party was splitting in two ideologically and wanted the issue resolved as soon as possible
therefore he called for a Nazi conference to be held at Bamberg.
As a result of the Wall Street Crash unemployment in Germany grew exponentially. Many workers
had lost their jobs and therefore lots turned to communism, but this frightened wealthy businessmen
and so they financed Hitler s campaigns. Furthermore, many middle class people, alarmed by the
obvious failure of the Weimar Government, decided

The Dangers Of Driving At Night
Driving At Night It s considered the most dangerous time of day on the road, but as we fall back to
shorter days, it s inevitable that you will at times, find yourself driving at night. Tiredness, a lack of
light, compromised night vision and rush hour will all contribute to making driving at night far more
dangerous than any other time of the day. The fact that a fatal car accident is three times as likely at
night only highlights that fact. It s therefore incredibly important that we take extra care, considering a
number of factors; the most important of which, we ve outlined for you below. Tiredness and fatigue
Did you know a recent poll by the National Sleep foundation found a whopping 60% of adults had
driven while they were tired? Add to this the fact that 37%, that can be translated into 103 million
people, had actually fallen asleep at the wheel. Of those 37%, 13% had admit to falling asleep at least
once per month while 4% had actually caused an collision through falling asleep. While this may
sound insane to some, the reasons behind such statistics are actually numerous and no doubt the very
same reasons we may find ourselves driving while tired shift work, lack of decent sleep, long working
hours and even sleep disorders. It s a myth that this only happens on long car journeys too. These
frightening numbers are only backed up by another recent report which found 10,000 police reported
car accidents are a result of driver fatigue. The vast majority of which

Symbols and Symbolism
Flowers as a Symbol in The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck
In romantic or sexual context, a woman is often said to be as beautiful as a flower. In John Steinbeck s
short story The Chrysanthemums , Elisa Allen never receives this recognition. Although she is a strong
woman, she is frustrated because her husband will not admire her romantically in any way. This
frustration only deepens because she is childless and feels the need to be a mother. She discovers an
outlet for her frustration in a flower garden where she cultivates beautiful chrysanthemums. Steinbeck
uses these elegant flowers as a symbol to represent the tender, inner self of all women, including Elisa.
First, the chrysanthemums symbolize Elisa s children. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The chrysanthemums are symbolic of her children, and she is very proud of them. When Elisa s
husband compliments her on her flowers, she is proud, and on her face there [is] a little smugness
(240). She is happy and pleased by her ability to nurture these beautiful flowers. Elisa s pride in her
ability to grow such beautiful flowers reinforces the fact that the flowers are a replacement for her
children.
In the second part of the story, the chrysanthemums come to symbolize
Elisa s femininity and sexuality. The portrait of Elisa caring for the flowers as though they are her
children is clearly a feminine image, but her masculine image is also observed in her hard swept and
hard polished home
(240). This image is carried over into her relationship with her husband.
Elisa feels that Henry doesn t recognize or appreciate her femininity, and this feeling causes her to be
antagonistic towards him. There is an undercurrent of resentment towards her husband. Henry fails to
see his short comings, but Elisa fails to point them out to him. There is a distinct lack of harmony
between them, which causes Elisa to become discontented with
Henry. On observing her prize flowers, all Henry can say is, I wish you d work out in the orchard and
raise some apples that big (240). Henry s inability to understand Elisa s needs leaves her vulnerable in
her encounter with the tinker. The meeting with the tinker

Erikson and Goffman on American Identity Essay
When foreigners think of America, they think of McDonald s, the Statue of Liberty, Hollywood film
stars, and the list goes on. In terms of Americans, people associate Texans with cowboy boats,
Californians with surfboards, and New Yorkers with a snobbish grin on their face. It is true that all
these things represent America in one way or another, but what exactly is American identity? Erikson
s analysis on American identity has drawn attention to four topics: Mom, adolescent, boss, and
machine. He links all four topics together by using the myth of John Henry Hero. Goffman, on the
other hand, develops dramaturgical analysis to understand human behaviors. He sees men as actors
with different roles and these actors have to perform to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Second, parents do not satisfy everything the child demands, and the child feels neglected and grows
distant from his parents. John Henry left his parents because his parents fed the dogs before they fed
him. Third, he left because he was sure that he could take care of himself. John Henry took into his
grave believing that a man counts only as a man (Erikson, P. 299). Hence, in another point of view, he
abandoned his parents just as Erikson says, it was the child who abandoned the mother, because he
had been in such a hurry to become independent (Erikson, P.296). This abandonment also lead to
another factor rejections to intimate feelings. Erikson finds not only the sorrow of having been
abandoned but also the fear of committing to deep emotions (Erikson, P.301) in cowboys because
there is a mental barrier in knowing that they have abandoned their mothers and have been abandoned
by her. Cowboys, thus, are usually rather lonely people. Their job will not let them see their family nor
their friends very often. They are the man without roots, the motherless man, the womenless man
(Erikson, P.299). The nonsense folk songs offer a funny yet sarcastic view of cowboys life they are not
bounded by relationships because they are not allowed to do so. This lifestyle,

Reaction to Castro Announces the Revolution Essay
I do not feel that I know enough about Fidel Castro to be an expert on his life or how he ruled Cuba,
but the little that I do currently know, I would not consider him a kind and caring man. With that in
mind, some of the comments made by Fidel Castro in Castro Announces the Revolution, were
shocking to me, since he tries to make the point that he cares for the people of Cuba and the revolution
was set into motion for the benefit of the people, not an egotistical leader. At the start of this story,
Fidel Castro recalls images from his youth of revolutionaries carrying weapons and demanding that
things were done their way. He speaks of the fear of being killed. Castro goes on to talk about how
these revolutionaries always seem to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He says that if that was the case, then the revolution would not have been worth it. We know now that
is exactly what became of Castro a powerful man that became the king figure that he so vehemently
despised. Castro praises the people of Cuba. No general can do more than the people. No army can do
more than the people. (342) He comments that the people won the war. Without an army, tanks, planes
or heavy guns, the people were ...able to win the battle for liberty. (342) He states that the people were
important. The revolution does not serve my interests as a person, nor those of any other commander
or captain. The interests the revolution serves are those of the people. (342) The remarks again refer to
the revolution being about the people as a whole and not of an egotistical leader. Who was Castro
trying to convince of this? Was he trying to convince the people or himself? One of most shocking
statements that Fidel makes is, And I want to tell the people and the mothers of Cuba that I will
resolve all problems without shedding a drop of blood. (342) Up until this point in time, Castro was
surrounded by blood shed. There was plenty of blood shed during the revolution and after Castro was
in control of Cuba, his brother, Raul Castro, and Che Guevara oversaw the rounding up and
executions of roughly 160 Batista officers (Sweig 39). It is hard for me to comprehend how Castro
could feel that these

History of the Eucharist
History of the Eucharist The Sacrament of Eucharist is the most frequently received Sacraments in the
Catholic Church. The matter in the Sacrament of Eucharist is the bread and wine, which changes into
the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The Sacrament of Eucharist is dated in the Bible as far back to the
Old Testament, indirectly as the Israelites flee from Egypt in the desert, and God gives them manna to
eat. This happens multiple times while the Israelites are searching for the Promised Land. The most
important part of the Bible when the Eucharist is received, is when Jesus and the Apostles are at the
Last Supper. Through the Sacrament of Eucharist, Jesus breaks the bread and passes it around to his
apostles. Then, Jesus says that one of them will betray him, and whoever dips the bread in the wine at
the same time he does will be the one who will betray him. As we know Judas was the one who
betrayed him, and must have been the one to dip the bread in the wine at the same time as Jesus. Even
though all the Gospel writers wrote about Jesus Matthew, Mark, and Luke wrote about the meal Jesus
had with his Apostles the night before his death, not John. Between the Resurrection of Jesus, and the
conversion of the Emperor Constantine to Christianity. During this period of time in the Roman
Empire, people who were Christians, were persecuted in public, just because of their beliefs.
Christians had made a modification to having to receive the

40% of the total cost of the procedure. The rest of money would split between medical clinics and

The business plan with such high gross margin seems quite favorable. However, the company s
concept has some potential problems. The company did not mention how to minimize the risk of
hurting women s health when they proceeded to collect their eggs. Furthermore, the business plan did
not include the best use time of the storage eggs. If the eggs were expected to keep in years, the
quality of eggs could not be ensured. Finally, they did not offer a strong report to state the potential
issues of using freezing eggs. Would the technique influence the health of babies?

  • 2. Importance of the Past in Willa Cather s My Antonia Essay The Importance of the Past in Willa Cather s My Antonia In My Antonia, Willa Cather emphasizes the importance of the past through Jum Burden s narration. Jim Burden realizes at the conclusion of the novel how much he enjoyed his childhood days and how much his memories mean to him. There are three events that Cather included in the novel which contribute greatly to the overall theme, concerning the importance of the past. One event is in Chapter II of Book III. Jim decides to write about his youth in Nebraska as Vergil has just done. As he is thinking about this, Lena Lingard comes to the door and he is excited to see her. Once again he begins to think about the past. Even after she left, just her presence had impacted his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He spends a day in Black Hawk that ends in a disappointment since none of his childhood friends are around. Walking out to the edge of town, he finds a half mile stretch of the old wagon road which used to run like a wild thing across the open prairie. The memory of his first ride over that road comes to him strongly. Now he feels that this road has brought him and Antonia back together. It is the road of Destiny along which their lives have traveled. Another event appears in chapter 14 of book II. Antonia and Jim are having a picnic by the river. It is an important event for many reasons. First, the past is brought up, when Antonia says, It would be like old times. The reader can only be reminded of the events that have taken place in Book I. For example when Jim walks two miles towards the river. At the riverbank he takes a swim and realizes how much he will miss this river once he goes off to college. Jim skated, swam and fished on this river throughout his childhood. Second, it is the last shared afternoon of Jim and Antonia s youth. Throughout their youth, Jim and Antonia share a number of memorable moments, like the time when Jim teaches Antonia how to read. However, this is their last day together in their childhood. Soon, Jim will be going away to college so the future is near. Then, he finds Antonia crying because she is looking at overhanging bushes that remind her of Bohemia. It makes me homesick, ... • 3. Dr. Stevin Gehrke s Lab Upon arriving as a student at the University of Kansas, I immediately took an interest in numerous extracurricular activities and organizations. I have established myself as a leader in multiple organizations, including my role as vice president in the Biomedical Engineering Society at KU. These organizations have provided fantastic experiences, but I found myself needing more. I found enjoyment and success in my classes, but I was eager to apply my knowledge. I sought out positions in various research groups on campus, and I eventually pursued an opportunity to partake in undergraduate research involving hydrogels and their characteristics in Dr. Stevin Gehrke s lab. In this lab, I create and characterize various polymer based hydrogels by way of click chemistry using multiple crosslink wavelengths and times as well as varying concentrations of different monomers, polymers, and photoinitiators. I perform mechanical assessments that include measurement of swelling degrees and compression testing to determine various moduli for characterization of gels. These assessments are performed to determine the most suitable gels for biomedical uses such as cell encapsulation and drug delivery. It has been the first real opportunity I ve had to utilize my passion and skills for important and relevant advancements in the scientific community. I have learned the importance of laboratory safety and have implemented these practices. I have further developed basic skills that are necessary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Embryonic Stem Cell Debate Embryonic stem cell research has been a heated debate for upwards of 30 years due to the controversial nature of extracting embryos for research purposes. Recently the ban for federal funding to research embryos has been lifted; therefore, sparking even more debate on whether or not embryonic stem cells research is ethical. Embryonic stem cell research is the extracting of embryos in order to conduct research in cell repair and growth. There are two moral principles to choose between: is it used to prevent or help suffering and pain, or should we respect the value of human life? Embryonic stem cell research is considered murder by many. Also, with thousands of embryos preserved in in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics, it appears that there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Linda Bevington, director of research for the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity stated, A lot of proponents of the stem cell research are saying these embryos are extras... so we might as well just take their cells and create some therapies... however, it is possible to adopt those embryos (Robinson, 2002). Thirdly, human embryos are treated as mere research material, not as human objects deserving respect (Wills, 2001, p. 115). The Nuremberg Code states that not only must the human subject give consent, but also scientists are to protect the subject against injury, disability or death. The embryos most certainly are not giving consent and are definitely not being protected. Lastly, embryonic stem cells pose risks for patients because they have the tendency to form tumors and produce immune rejection. A patient with Parkinson s disease received an injection of fetal brain tissue. Two years later, the patient had passed. An autopsy discovered that the skin and hair tissue had filled the ventricles of his brain, cutting off his breathing (Wills, 2001, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Bounce Temperature Experiment Height of Ball Drop vs. Bounce Height of Ball Lab Conclusion WHAT HAPPENED? The greater the height of ball drop, the higher the bounce height of the ball. With a drop height of 50 cm, the average ball bounce height was 42 cm, with a drop height of 100 cm, the average bounce height was 76.3 cm, and when dropped at 150 cm, the ball bounce height was 110.6 cm. My hypothesis was supported. WHY DID IT HAPPEN? When the ball was held at a higher height, it had more Gravitational Potential Energy, because G.P.E depends on height above the ground, and mass of the object (mass remained the same). Since the ball had a greater amount of G.P.E, it converted into more kinetic energy, or motion energy, when it was dropped. So, it hit the ground with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Homelessness Of A Home Having a Home People cannot be fulfilled without a home, because a home is a place people can go back to, a place that gives them stability, where people can have their own privacy, gives them comfort, and can symbolize something different. Without a home, people cannot be fulfilled, there are only places in which they can rest, but never sleep; there is no place that they can call their own. People with a home always have a place to go back to, they know that no matter what happens that place will always be there. For some people it is not the home that comforts them, but it is the people that live in it, their family is what comforts them rather than the home. For other people the home is a place that holds nothing more than bad memories that they want nothing more than to forget. For some people a home is not required for fulfillment, their home is just a place for them to sleep then go out and live their life, home is just a rest stop for them. There are many people who travel the world for weeks at a time, they sleep in run down hotels or not even in proper shelter, they do not go back to a home, but they still achieve fulfillment. Going around the world helping people who are less fortunate is what fulfills them. People who tend not to have a home have other ways of fulfillment. Then there are people who are minimalist who attempt to live on as little as possible, for them their home is bare and maybe small. The colonial days were so important because if we didn t have these settlers come and build the colonies, we wouldn t be living here today. The 13 colonies that have made up this land are New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. There were so many things they did to get food, water, resources, and etc. They were very creative people and used lots of different inventions to live and get resources that they didn t have. One was the triangular trade route. The name was given by the route which the goods from the colonies were taken back to Europe. Europe made the things they traded for and sold them back to another territory. While the triangular trade route started in the 1500 s it really didn t start working until the mid 1600 s. Not all tribes used the triangular trade route some tribes just used their own inventions to get from place to place. They had many jobs back then to keep the places running. Comparing Orwell And Anthem, By Ayn Rand Secrets in the Shadows Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one (Thomas Paine). 1984, written by George Orwell, and Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, are both dystopian novels written to develop the idea of an overpowering government. Winston Smith, the protagonist of 1984, is a member of the Outer Party in the new world of Oceania where all thoughts are observed and each hope obliterated. Winston works in the Ministry of Truth where he erases history in order to form the present, however, Winston wonders about the circumstances of his world, run by the ubiquitous face of Big Brother, and hopes for a time, free of the suffocating hands of the Party, in order to obtain freedom. He knew what it meant, or thought he knew. The place where there is no darkness was the imagined future, which one would never see, but which, by foreknowledge, one could mystically share in (Orwell 107). Along with Orwell, the Bible alludes to the revelations in the light when Luke writes, Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops (English Standard Version, Luke 12.3). O Brien is telling Winston that even though they are unable to meet in the all telling daylight, someday his hope is that they will be able to meet somewhere other than under the cover of darkness. Winston and O Brien are both hoping to one day live in a society where freedom is available and privacy is an achievable feat, however they are unable to do so now because the light exposes all secrets because it shines through the darkness and takes away their solitude. A distributed system can be much larger and more powerful given the combined capabilities of the distributed components, than combinations of stand alone systems. But it s not easy for a distributed system to be useful, it must be reliable. There is no way to detect the failure except by timeout: it either stops sending I m alive (heartbeat) messages or fails to respond to requests. Your computer freezing is a halting failure. * Omission failures: Failure to send/receive messages primarily due to lack of buffering space, which causes a message to be discarded with no notification to either the sender or receiver. This can happen when routers become overloaded. * Network failures: A network link breaks. * Timing failures: A temporal property of the system is violated. For example, clocks on different computers which are used to coordinate processes are not synchronized when a message is delayed longer than a threshold period, etc. www.code.google.com Timing failures there is suspicion of a possible failure related to the motherboard.
