Tuber borchii is an edible truffle species that can form mycorrhizal relationships with various tree hosts. Cattaneo from Italy published the first description of stem rot or sclerotial disease in
1876. Since then, reports of it have come from a number of rice-growing nations, including
Japan, the United States, Ceylon, Burma, Vietnam, the Philippines, and China. In India it was
first observed in Bengal in 1911. Butler later documented the condition in full a year later, in
1918. Since then, the majority of states that farm rice have reported it. Damage varies
depending on the tract and possibly depending on the season. Stem rot of rice is caused by **Sclerotium oryzae**¹. It is one of a number of organisms that can damage rice leaf sheaths and/or stems. Others are listed in the “Rice field guide to pests, diseases and weeds”¹. The fungus infects the leaf sheath, leading to leaf death and rotting of the stem¹.

Fungal diseases are one of major constraints on groundnut production in Burkina Faso. Among these diseases, early leaf spot caused by Cercospora arachidicola (Hori.) is one of the most important economic diseases of groundnut. Aim of contributing to search effective control methods against this disease, we undertook the present study, which consisted in (i) study morphological diversity of different Cercospora arachidicola isolates (ii) study the level of pathogenicity of Cercospora arachidicola strains identified (iii) evaluate the efficacy of some bio-fungicides on the strains identified. The study was carried out in 14 villages in the Hauts Bassins and Boucle du Mouhoun regions of Burkina Faso with regard to prospecting and sample collection, and at the INERA Bobo Dioulasso plant pathology laboratory for isolation, identification, pathogenicity and biofungicide efficacy testing. A total of five strains of Cercospora arachidicola were identified. The pathogenicity test was used to classify the five strains according to their virulence. In decreasing order of virulence, the strains were Fara, Darsa, Logo, Santi and Kod. In vitro evaluation of biofungicide efficacy shows that PLANSAIN biofungicide provides better control of Cercospora arachidicola strains. Trichoderma hazanium, the active ingredient in PLANSAIN, inhibits the radial growth of Cercospora arachidicola strains to a greater extent.

E-mail* navarretenh@vtr.net Abstract Tuber borchii is an excellent edible truffle, also known as “bianchetto” or “marzuolo” in Italy and “blanquilla” in Spain. Widely spread all over Europe, from UK to Italy, Spain and Portugal. In the markets can be usually found mixed with other whitish truffles from the Puberulum section. Due to its broad range of ecology and habitats, in this project several infection techniques to inoculate different host trees to this truffle were studued, in order to cultivate it in all these potencial areas. Seedlings of Pinus pinea, Pinus sylvestris, Pinus radiata, Quercus ilex, Quercus suber, Quercus striatula (a native oak from México) and Coryllus avellana formed mycorrhizas with Tuber borchii at levels from 29% to 54%, seven months after the inoculation. All trees were outplanted to follow their performance in the field. Tuber borchii has claimed to be an agressive truffle able to fast infect trees. On the other hand hazelnut industry is growing fast in Chile, and hundreds of hazel orchards are being planted in the regions also suitable for growing truffles. Most hazel seedlings come from layering in clump strangulation, with other mycorhizas in the root system, mainly Scleroderma. An experiment with hazels was done in oder to evaluate three different inoculation methods: a) nursery inoculation on seedlings coming from seeds; b) rootdip inoculation of commercial seedlings at the outplanting time; c) direct inoculation in mature hazels in the field. Results are a) all nursery inoculated hazels got mycorhizas with the inoculated truffle over 30% of infection, b) 83% of hazels got T. borchii mycorhizas and c) 66% of hazels got T. borchii mycorhizas. Although the levels of mycorhization on b) and c) were always lower than 10%. At the same time different inoculations in mature forests (Pinus pinea, Quercus suber and Quercus rugosa) have been carried out with this white truffle in Spain, Portugal and México.
