30. 21 August 95 First large eruption, which blanketed Plymouth in a thick ash cloud and caused darkness for about 15 minutes. First evacuation of southern Montserrat initiated shortly afterwards.

46. The shelters had very simple rooms and sometimes four people would live in a room no larger than 10 ft. by 6 ft. Though it might not look like it, the emergency shelters are still maintained by the Montserrat government because the volcano has yet to return to a state of dormancy. By August 1997, there were still 1,600 people living in shelters.

47. About 2/3rds of the population migrated to other islands or back to the U.K. (the parent country of Montserrat). The rest had to build new homes with the help of the government and assistance from many other countries. The island's main industry at the moment is construction, followed by Volcano tourism.
